Here's something for the Fleet Air Arm enthusiasts....
http://www.oldroyalnavalcollege.org/events/fly-navy-100,323,EV.html
am planning on being there :) hoping the weather remains fine
Quoting from website "
The Royal Navy celebrates 100 years of naval aviation on 7 May with a centenary flypast over HMS Illustrious moored in the River Thames at Greenwich. The spectacular formation flypast will take place at midday with the aircraft flying along the river from east to west. The best vantage point to watch it will be in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College where the Royal Navy will also be staging a static display of battle proven naval aircraft.
HMS Illustrious will be in London over the weekend 7-10 May. Although the ship cannot be open to the general public there will be a 30 minute flying demonstration over the river in front of the College during the early afternoon of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May.

one hopes that the weekend displays will bring rather more activity from the RN and FAA than today's single flypast

Here's a series of photos on the Telegraph pages. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/uknews/5291554/Royal-Navy-aircraft-fly-past-HMS-Illustrious-moored-on-the-Thames.html) Includes shots of Eric Brown (the test pilot - just in case any one doesn't know) and John Moffat (Credited with crippling the Bismark). Also another gentleman who is not named but has a nice collection of medals.

thanks guys
wish some of the pics had some rotor action, but the prints with the Tv and Av settings came out over-exposed, ie the rotor blur was ok but the actual image was either too bright or slighly blurred overall
shuttleworth and duxford next weekend and hoping to get some prop blur there :) any tips? the camera is an EOS 450d with tamron 300mm zoom lens

Great photos Chris. What did you have your metering mode set to? When taking photo's of aircraft against clouds I tend to use either center or spot metering to ensure that over exposure is kept to a minimum.

thanks TSR2, i just checked and it is on the 'evaluative metering' setting.... it could make all the difference to try your recommendation, thanks :)
a note to any persons attending tomorrow's display, the DLR is out of action this weekend as is the Jubilee Line from Westminster to Canary Wharf, Central line is also suspended.... to travel from Putney to Greenwich took me the best part of 2 and a half hours today, thats cause i had to take the boat from westminster to greenwich, thats 11 quid return
and another thing.... shooting in RAW is worth the effort . If you don't have any post processing software, try Canon's Digital Photo Professional that should have come on the CD with your camera.
Also I'd check the histogram when taking shot's to make sure your not blowing your exposure. If you are you could use adjust the exposure compensation setting to adjust the exposure.

got some of the statics to upload later
i was standing between Illustrious and greenwich pier....
...but if i go tomorrow i think that inside the old naval college grounds is best as you get the winching displays right in front of you
....would suggest to stand as far downriver on the college seafront as you can....so as to avoid getting the pier and boats in the way

Nice shots! Interestingly, that's HMS Raider P275 an Archer class patrol vessel. She's homeported at Ipswich as part of Cambridge University Royal Naval Unit, the URNU's are a similar scheme to the RAF's UAS squadrons. Good to see her in action with the Lynx!
