Southend-on-sea 24/05/09

one sunburn later (thats 4 of my last 5 tans away from home)....southend on seas's festival of the air promised to be a good show, and with sunshine forecast the camera was packed and off i went, took me an hour and a half to get there and 3 to return....and these are the [not so satisfactory] pics.... would have been much better from a photography perspective to have this venue host a late afternoon event ;)

some nicely composed shots,slow your shutter speed down though for the props and choppers,1/320 and below should give you better results.

thanks for the tip Zed, i understand what you mean, did experiment with the shutter / iso a bit but was seeing the result as too bright

they appear very grainy and lack definition now.

1. on 'T' priority shifting between 1/250 and 1/400 - i was using that before the sun came overhead

2. on 'A' around the F18 mark for the best part of the next 2 hours

3. on sports mode on and off

i think that 'shooting' against the sun / being close to the seafront caused a condition with which i am not entirely confident yet with this new camera. this could perhaps have been remedied simply by standing on one of the nearby hills and shooting ahead rather than upwards

plenty of airshows left in which to fine tune ;)

Thanks for posting Chris.

I'd also play around with your exposure compensation settings even if your camera's set to spot metering. This can make a big difference when shooting aircraft against the sky. If your camera shows you a histogram it's worth taking a look and the adjusting the compensation to bring the exposure back towards the middle.

As for the focus, were you just using the center AF point?

am using an eos 450d canon and a tamron 300mm zoom with uv filter on the front end

single centre spot metering

am surprised that it varied so much from the previous weekend's pics....didnt change a thing from the greenwich event onwards

ok,dont use the sports mode.
shooting against the sun is'nt going to help.
use TV and AV settings most of the time.
try to use ISO100 and ISO 200 most of the time.
for fast jets speeds of 1/400th and upwards are preferable[fastest is best unless your good at the panning technique]
props shoot below 1/320th lower if the light is good.
also try and shoot in RAW format as you will be surprised in the difference in quality.
you can easily post process your images to a good standard with the canon software that comes with your camera.
