Nice! I thourght the 1/400 TriStars had an obvious joint line where the tail meets the fuselage.. must be on the Geminijet version.. how big is it (Phnaar Phnarr!!)

All of Dragon's L-1011's are "seamless". Only the Gemini Jets mould has seams, both above the horizontal stabilizer (running horizontally immediately below the #2 intake), and at the base of the tail (crossing under the fuselage slightly forward of the tail assembly). You've got quite a find there with the Pan Am. The Pan Am L-1011's (two of them were released by Dragon, one as a regular release, and one as a Dragon "points" redemption model that was also repackaged as a Jet-X special release a short time ago) are exceptionally rare, and wildly popular among 1/400 collectors. I am lucky enough to have both.

The Gemini Jets L-1011 mould, which has also been used for releases by the mysterious "Dream Jets" label, is a lovely mould despite the seams.

Both Dragon and Gemini Jets make both versions of the L-1011. The original (longer) -100 version, and the subsequent -500 variant (with the Frisbee Fairing and shorter fuselage). The Dragons are slightly more accurate, as Gemini Jets recycles the same wing for both releases.

The Herpa mould for the L-1011 (in 1/400 scale) is seamless (like the Dragon), but I don't particularly care for the nose, which is done much better by both Gemini and Dragon.

Thanx PH. As per Agents comments, Snapped them up quickly because of the Pan Am, not realising is was a bit sought after. A friendly dealer told me most early DW/GJ L1011's getting quite hard to get.
Still rather have in 1/144th. ;)
For ref: model no:55142 and comes with a free Low Lobe Loader.

Nice, only point is that wing/fuselage joint on the herc just doesn't look right.
And why oh why can't Corgi do a 144th Delta herk????
Nice 'lectra though and ys11. :)

I've got an extra pair of Pan Am 707's made by the mysterious "Pan Am Models" company: Clipper Pride of America (N473PA), and Clipper Yankee Ranger (N418PA). They are much nicer than the Dragon Wings 707s (using the same mould used by AeroClassics). I ended up with two of each during the initial release, and would entertain a reasonable offer. I could price out shipping if you are interested.

Ah, size. That's always the problem isn't it? :) (so mrs GB says anyway!)(I think she means the size of my planes :o )
I would love to seriously go 1/400 because of what is available, but just a wee bit small. Makes you wonder if someone like Dragon will venture into the middle area 144th-250th?
as it would fit nicely between 72nd and 400th. Say, 1/200th as seem the favorite for larger models. A diecast range of airliners and larger miljets at a reasonable cost under £50 a unit and they could have a winner. :)

I like 1/400s but have to draw the line as to what I collect so have tended to stick with the bigger stuff, that said have been unable to sell on the Lufthansa 707 cos I like it tooo much... was severely tempted by an Air France one but resisted, then theres the BCAL & TMA etc nooo stop..

On the subject of PAN AM B707s see if you can find a picture of an Inflight 1/200 version, they are not cheap except this one was ;) a very REAL bargain !! :) :) another one that should be liberated from box to cabinet :(

Indeed this is true, I got given a Gemini catalogue about three years ago and got pretty hooked on the 1/400 stuff. It's frightening just how much space those little models can end up taking, I've had to box all mine until I get around to making more space as the 1/72s are spreading like wildfire! :)

....and where would you put them?? Is is really worth collecting more and more, just to stash away in the attic in boxes under some some false illusion of 'investment', when you could have all these on display in a reasonable-size cabinet to enjoy in 1/400th? The detail and quality in both 1/400th and 1/500th scale models is quite incredible and can easily equal anything Corgi can do in 1/144th!

27th February 2005, 22:06
Wow Albert!! Are you going a bit 'native' and having a 'pop' against Corgi? I agree, space is a problem but those 1/400 scale planes are just a bit too small for me.

Size does appear to matter. Although I have realised very late in the day, that collecting in one scale, 144th, just isn't going to happen. So what to do?
Some 400ths look fine if they are larger planes such as Boeing 747 etc. BUT boeing 707's, 737's and that includes my favorite connies, electras, namc ys11's are just far too small. 144th suits these far better. This is why I am of the opinion gemini are on the right track with 250th. Saw both new 737's today and just the right size. Even a 747 is manageable. just look at Skymarks resin 250th 747's. so its a variety of scales to suit the plane. Not really what I would have wanted, but you end up with all the models about the same size, which makes displaying them easier. Corgi I fear are losing the plot with 32nd mossies etc. Rant over

No support there... Well better close the shop down then..

Put them.. no problem.. If that were the case why the 1/32nds...

Civils come out to play.. no bits to fall off or aerials to bend.. they get displayed on a rotational basis.. and they must have been profitable for Corgi..

1/400 is just too small unless yer going for the rows and rows on a wall cabinet..

1/250 as GB states is about right, but will it be supported.. where is the VC10..?

1/200.. well supose if I win the lottery...

Models for investment.. thats a laugh....!! :D :D :D

I think if Corgi were as prolific as, say, Dragon or Gemini Jets, space would be an issue. As it is, I have now over a hundred military/civil 1/144 models and have room in the display cases for them all. More than enough. Each shelf holds two rows of models: upper row on stands, lower on landing gear. There is additional room should I choose to make a lower front, lower rear, upper front, upper rear arrangement on each shelf.

Bring 'em on! :D (starting with the VC10)

Just came from the hobby shop where there is a display of several hundred 1/400 models from various manufacturers. A veritable sea of planes. A cacaphony of colour. Takes concentration to focus on a specific airplane in order to see just it. Hmmmmm.
