View Full Version : Dear Corgi: your next DC-3?

I propose Corgi dust off the Dakota/DC-3/C-47/Skytrain moulds and do this one. Why?
1. Colourful: catches the eye. (good for sales.)
2. Little investment/good return on money.
3. Keeps Albert Ross employed researching livery. (He could explain, for example, why this model carries a US registration on the vertical fin and a British one on the wings and fuselage..... If valid, there is increased potential for UK sales. :) )
4. Maintain presence in 1/144 market.
5. Companion model to Corgi Northwest Orient Airlines B-377 Stratocruiser.
6. BTY wants one.... :D

Dust off ? I have 21 of Corgi's Daks and that is not a complete collection! It hasn't had time to get dusty.
I will take more but I would prefer more military examples. How about the Russian licence built Li-2 with a gun turret or the Japanese licence built L2D.
One that I would really like is the C47C amphibious floatplane. OK, it was a one off but so what.

Bit like s*itfires. This casting can run and run BUT pleeeeez don't just do mils.
By all means do a rusky, but not at the exclusion of civils. Specially when they are Air Atlantique (..tic)/ Northwest colors. Dont care if leg-ends (wheels dont drop off!)

Both photos were taken at the Fighter Meet at North Weald in 1986 which was sponsored by Northwest. The DC-3 was based there for the weekend - the 747 wasn't! :D
The 747 / DC-3 formation was amazing enough, but the 747 + 10 warbirds was something I'm sure I'll never see again!

The reason for the dual reg is that Northwest sponsored Air Atlantique to reapint G-AMPY to commemorate their 50th Anniversary. It flew in formation with a NWA B747 at the North Weald Air show in 1986, as per the link already posted. Scheme lasted just the one season, so not worth doing this one. If we did a NWA DC-3, it would be a 'genuine' one. Next Corgi DC-3 WILL be a US airline, but not NWA and will appear in the second half of this year.

Thanks for the pics, Seafire; very interesting. Here in Minneapolis Northwest Airlines aircraft are so taken for granted that we expect they'll be around for ever, just blending in with the landscape. 'tain't so, is it? These classic aircraft disappear before we know it, and we always (blessed with hindsight) say "Why didn't I take rolls of film when I had the chance?"

Thanks for the explanation, Albert. I'm in the game still for another Corgi DC-3 despite having 15 of 'em, and look forward to a US airline livery. Still would like a NWA bird to go with my NWA 377, though. Oh, and a NWA 707, too! :D

Great choice, Neil, I'd love to see Corgi do the Braniff DC-3. But I wouldn't mind a TWA or a North Central Airlines bird, either. North Central was based in Minneapolis and gobbled up Southern Airways, changed its name to Republic, and was, in turn, gobbled up by Northwest. Lots of nice photos of NC birds on airliners.net. The liveries all had the famous "Waldo the Flying Duck" logo prominently displayed, usually on the vertical fin/rudder.

What a beauty, can't be that difficult to do floats on a dak, and a civvie scheme to boot!
Might consider a repaint/float fitment to a spare DC3 I've got knocking around. (make a change to smashing it! :D )

Quite handy that 0.303. The following quote is from http://www.warbirdalley.com/anson.htm
"Despite its obvious limitations as a weapon, the Anson's maneuverability, surprising durability and skilled crews sometimes turned the slow, lightly armed craft into a formidable opponent. During the evacuation of British and French forces from Dunkirk, for instance, one of a group of Ansons pressed into service to protect the beleaguered troops was attacked by 10 Messerschmitts, shooting down two and damaging a third before the "dogfight" ended. Not bad for an obsolete and vastly outclassed weapon."
