View Full Version : Stratocruisers at Corgi Field

Since Goonybird pointed out to me that I had forgotten Corgi does do an aircraft in Northwest Airlines livery in 1/144, I felt it only fair to (a) take back 10% of what I said, and (b) showcase that very colourful bird as a sort of apology to Corgi.... ;)
Here we see NWA's Boeing 377 N74601, "Stratocruiser Manila", on the main ramp in several views.
Meanwhile, N404Q, a Transocean bird, takes the active for a Runway 24 departure.
Since Corgi Field is a joint-use facility, we see several C-97s on the military side of the field. One is a KC-97L from the Illinois Air National Guard (0-20900) doing some engine run-ups. This ship is named "The City of Chicago" and is home-based at O'Hare International Airport (KORD) in Chicago.
Another is the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation's C-97G parked overnight on the transient ramp.
A third ship is the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) Pacific Division's C-97A (8406) being towed out of the hangar after an engine change.
The Stillwater Airport Commission has done some long-range planning for expansion in order to accommodate a Northwest Airlines Douglas DC-3 and a Boeing 707-320 some time in the future. :D

Great shots as ever ... and a couple of my all time favourite from the Illinois AG to boot. Mine is on permanent display, and that's against some pretty stiff competition!

Hey the KC-97L! :D That was one of the first Corgi AA models I bought. When my girlfriend bought me the RAF C-130K Tanker the same day I knew that it was the start of a slippery slope of AA addiction!
Funny really as she's now my wife, aka our very own femail member of the forum Snapper! I have very fond memories of that model, though sadly it's now in storage with my Gemini 1/400's to make way for the 1/72 collection. :(

You can't find a BOAC Strat in the US, Albert, because you characters in the UK have snapped them all up! Oh, you see them occasionally listed on the 'bay, but they seem to come very dear.
Can't find a Pan Am one either. I won't go into the story of the KC-97L you see on Corgi Field - the only one I've ever seen listed on an Internet auction - but I was lucky enough to be able to snap it up at a very reasonable price.
Polished Metal BOAC Stratocruiser? Absolutely. Put me down for one. The PM Britannia is one of my very favourite Corgi 1/144 types, as is the PM SAA Dakota, the PM USAF C-47A, and, of course, the PM Connie. I just like that look. The Strat could be very reflective as can be seen below.
For a military C-97 I'd opt for a Polished Metal one with lots of color: white, chrome, and, of course, Dayglo orange panels. A very smart look. :D
