I've just seen the new Dragon Wings 1/400 Boeing E-3A Sentry (AWACS) at my local hobby shop.

It's somewhat smaller than the expanded image in the above link.

Beautiful......beautiful......

shame its 1/400th... so how come Dragon can knock out things like this which I'm sure Corgi think are too obscure ??

They do look rather scrummy.. seems there are two from the Dragon site..

But one has to stop somewhere....

I have the other Orion and to be honest they are very plasticy, only the fuselage is metal, a far cry from GeminiJets.

Are the Props on the Orion as bad as they look in the pic's? That is what put me off this model.

Ascot, I don't think the props are that bad, the nose gear on mine is bent at an angle and don't dare to try a straightening job and the rubber tyres ping off so easily. They do provide some spares in the packaging but within five minutes of opening both of my nose gear tyres had fallen onto the carpet, which is dark blue. After about ten minutes of searching I managed to find them again but I know don't dare to hold it over a dark surface. I think it will forever be parked on white paper!! The details on the model are good, easily on a par with GJ's, but they do use excessive amounts of plastic on their 1:400 models. I also have the Luftwaffe A310 and the only metal part is the fuselage. It has very flimsy plastic wings and in certain shops I have seem them marked up for the same price as GJs. The only reason I ordered this one was because I got it from Canada for less than £8 but I would never pay UK prices for one. The one positive with the Dragons is that they do give you the option to display with the undercart up or down but the stands are the same as the awful 1:72 ones.

Anyway I digress, Ascot, the props are OK!! ;)

Thanks for that, I agree with your findings on the Dragon Wings (Maybe they should be called Plastic Wings!!) I much prefer Gemini Jets. I have had to buy a few as I collect the Virgin Atlantic Models and stuff like the E3's and JSTARS.
Still undecided on the Orion though! :(

I had a good look at some of the Dragon 1-400 offerings while in the States, namely the JSTARS, AWACS, C-130J and P-3C Orion. Although they are nice models I feel they're a bit small for the asking price and to be honest I like my models to be all diecast not have dodgy plastic wings. If I wanted plastic, I'd make the model myself from a kit!!

I think Gemini set the standard for 1/400 with their airliners, and I have many as I simply couldn't resist the quality of them. I would like to see Gemini produce a model E-3B AWACS as I'm sure it would knock the spots off the Dragon version, and with the low wing there wouldn't be a repeat of the C-17's nasty looking join where the wing joins the fuselage!
