Anybody have any tips on creating effective runway strips, apart from the usual powder grass or grey paint? I have tried a few things from painted cork tiles to actual macadam samples from work but i am running low on ideas.

S/T... I acquired a roll of grass that I use to take my piccies of the planes on... Unroll it, place it on tehtable, place me warbirds on and photo away... Cost me around six quid from a local toyfair...... Dam good value I say and it don't need mowing either.... :)

Works for warbirds, but not sure about the modern stuff.....

'Wet and Dry' paper works well...with a pot of humbrol 33? (gloss black) you can paint the 'tarmac' joins etc. just remember not to 'taxi' any models....may end up with flat tyres!!

Thank you sir....you can use different shades of Tarmac also useful for those 'desert' schemes with normal coloured 'sand' paper..... :D

I used to model Ngauge model railways,a popular method of producing tarmac was by useing fine wall plaster. When it's gone off mix some black and some white paint slightly so that some colour is'nt mixed then just brush it on and you will get tarmac of varying shades giving a weathered effect. Can be a bit messy but effective.

Apparently plaster of Paris is a good texture for sand dioramas, bit messy though! :D Only big problem at the moment is a lack of desert groundcrew. I recently looked at the Airfix Afrika Korps set to see if there was anything I could "convert", nope! :(

Here is an idea for the th tarmac, although I hav not got around to trying it myself yet.

Buy some scenic coal for model railways, and glue it to the board. This hould then give you the stony texture. Then, take some fine grain filler and fill in the gaps between the stones, but roughly so that there are still holes in places, like real tarmac. Scrape off the top layer so it is smooth Then paint it all in a gloss back, mixed with a matt gray. Thi should look like real tarmac.

And what the pair together look like (http://www.diecast-aviation.co.uk/html/50045.html)

Yep - got a 4 x 2 piece of hardboard, nailed it to some 2 x 1 wood, then glued the Tarmac and Apron to it.

Any body know where I can find some pics of blast pens or disperal areas that I could use for reference. Preferably some that would suit WWII and modern aircraft.

A new airfield has just been opened in Yorkshire. No planning permission required and no objections from nearby residents.

My first attempt at a diarama (with a little help from PSP). Looks a bit bare so I'm on the lookout for some suitable accessories, groundcrew, oil drums etc preferably ready painted. I know I can get a 1/72 jeep and I already have some landrovers for use with modern aircraft. Any other sugestions?

The bit in the foreground is supposed to be the peri track/runway and I used railway modellers tarmac card. I'm not too impressed with it and wet n dry sandpaper might look better.

Actually it is a very little known fact that the 8th AF was based in Scotland. The myth that it was based in East Anglia is due to a very successful security cover up!

Yes, thats right DCR

Great pic mate.. How'd you get the two P51's flying then.....? :D I know someone that did that with teh background, but actually drilled his aircraft and had a bar running behind the backdrop, into the side of the aircraft which was the opposite side of the camera... Hope you didn't do that!!

What other things are you looking for as if you buy the 1/72nd FOV plastic figures you get the fuel cans, barrels and a few more bits in with them as that is what I use....

FOV set numbers 83099, 83098, 83096 and 83097.

That's where PSP came in. I took a picture without the aircraft and a second with them in. Then in PSP copied the second pic as a layer on top of the first and used the eraser tool to get rid of the stands and reveal part of the first layer underneath. The tricky part is matching up the two layers in the right postition.

Easier than routing out the boxes to find the undercarriage or drilling holes in TT & BBD  Suppose I could have used them for a battle damaged diarama afterwards.

Thanks for the tip about the FOV bits. I'll have a look out for those.

I think a new thread is on the way..." Latest landings at RAF Brigadoon! Coming to a Forum near you soon" :D
