I'll never get tired of looking at other people's collections. Very nice work, mate.

I like the levels you've created with the wooden blocks and the home-made stands. Looks like you've got some seriously heavy metal there too with lots of 1/32 and those big 1/72 Lancasters. I am particularly taken by your display of lightnings. I don't do modern jets myself but they look superb.

What a great collection and thanks for posting :D , the 1/32 scale look great on display but i would have to have the Lewis hurricane facing the opposite way around the painted tail markings in the wrong order really bugs me :( on such a great looking model.

What a great collection and beautifully displayed. The RAF B17 is a beauty. Is it a Code 3 or a kit build? Whichever, its terrific.

The B-17 is a frank mint armour collection, its a beast and is a ton heavy!! its not the most detailed of models, unlike my 1 48 lanc, but its in there as a memorial to my great uncle. The model carrys the markings of 214sqn BU-U, My uncle flew on this aircraft during the war as a w/o amongst other aircraft on the sqn, sadly he was KIA flying HB815 BU-J on the 3/4 march 1945, hense me buying the model to accompany the research i did on him and his crash.also hense the name on here is DAN 214sqn.

Thanks guys, glad you like them, Im very much prop and piston, than jet, but i purchased one lightning and got bitten, i want them all now.Plenty of heavy stuff and plenty more to come, big models my love, luckily i have the room to display them, as i know so many dont.

Im working in a stand for the lightning that will show it in its finest form, vertical climb into the clouds.

Wow! Those posters are great! I also love the stands you've got for the Lightnings! Did you make them yourself?

Dan214sqn
8th January 2011, 08:19
with ref to the lightning stands i cobbled them together at work in my dinner breaks, they really aint that flash, just a block of wood with silversteel sunk in, looks good with a lightning sitting on top though, im really not fond of the corgi little stand provided.

im doing a stand at the moment that will show the lightning in a vertical climb, in all its glory, will post sum pics when complete.

i thought id let you chaps know and see what im up2 at the moment, for the last few years i have been researching my great uncle who flew with 214sqn out of RAF Oulton during the war, sadly KIA 3/4th march 1945.

My road had led me to locating his crash site and recovering some parts of the aircraft!!! and now putting a few parts of militaria together in memory of him, i wont drone on about the research as id be here until next week typing, but there is a bit more info on this link about the finding of the crash site and recovery.

http://www.lancaster-archive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3555

Here are a fewshots of my militaria bits, still very much a working progress. If your wondering why there is a bald head in there??? thats for the flying helment and mask when it finally arrives.

I can understand what you mean Dan,my uncle was engaged to my mother in '41 and was M.I.A a few months after (she married his younger brother, years later),i have a small, but somewhat scattered display, dedicated to him but,as he was lost in a Manchester,i've had to use Cg's 97 Sqn Lanc' instead,as it came on strength only a few months later though,i reckon that's acceptable,he's certainly never forgotten in this family as others are'nt in theirs.

...had another space making session in the cabinets tonight.Commited a cardinal sin that i have moaned at others for in the past.....models boxed up in the loft...im now guilty as charged and apologise to anyone i taunted about doing so.

4 x 1/32 109's are back in there cardboard and in darkness for the future, plus a couple of others.

I like to have a bit of space around my models..... can start to look like a pile of models if they are too close. I tend to have a bit of a cull now and then, to de clutter the display. The culled models end up in the loft, and a few new ones will come down to ensure a bit of crop rotation.

This all sounds logical and controlled...... however, new models enter the collection and soon the shelves are packed again. They say new roads attract new traffic......well making new space attracts new die casts

An "Expensive" pile of diecast :D

Seriously, I think the models need a bit of space so that they don't blend into each other.

I try and try to do this......but end up buying more models and slowly pushing them all closer together again. I then shift some models to the loft to make some space.....and the whole process starts again.... new models arrive, models get closer :o

...the great thing about bieng a member here is seeing other peoples displays and the way they display them, im always taking inspiration from various members and seeing how i can improve my own display, which i hope your all ok about. This particular set was inspired by finally seeing SB's collection. He is very clever in that he uses perspex stands to help space, and view better the aircraft, so..i thought id give it a go,

many thanks SB, hope u don't mind me using your ideas.Dan

Taking a look back through this thread i can really tell a big difference since becoming a member, in the way things are displayed and grouped, but mainly the aircraft in the collection, i only collected prop before i came here!!!

i hope you all approve.enjoy

...the great thing about bieng a member here is seeing other peoples displays and the way they display them, im always taking inspiration from various members and seeing how i can improve my own display, which i hope your all ok about.

That area of Scotland is well represented amoung the Corgi releases, two were based at Lossie (AA34101/AA34105) and one has ended up just down the road at Elgin (AA34102) If you ever get a chance to go into the Buccaneer filling station they have an amazing array if Whisky's for sale :)

Opel insigina and vauxhall insignia are the same car, just as the opel kadett was the vauxhall astra - now both known as astras - I think! Where are all the petrol heads??

Oh and to stay on thread, lovely bucc, a pic similar to that has graced my pc desktop for many months now. Its in such good condition i think because the vast majority of the nearby residents are RAF and presumably the kids respect that!

That 12 Squadron Buccaneer is an absolute beauty. I don't do post war and jets but I could make an exception for that one. I still remember the RAF recruitment film that was shown while I was at still at school (over thirty years ago!) called '12 Squadron Buccaneers' which had a soundtrack by Vangelis (his album 'Spiral'). I recall they had some lovely flying shots accompanied by the track 'To the Unknown Man' (the same music used for the World Championship snooker on the BBC a while back). It was magic. Love the Buccaneer.

Oh, and, of course, the Doe Spitfire is rather superb too.

Lovely pictures. Thanks for sharing.

NOTE to self: Get a 12 Squadron Buccaneer.

REPLY to self: You've already bought and sold that model twice. Make your mind up.

REPLY to self: I'm a die-cast collector. I change my mind about my collecting priorities make stupid decisions all the time.

REPLY to self: But if you buy the Buccaneer AGAIN you'll start buying jets and where will that lead?

Got my board 1150 x 568 mm, so its a nice size

Ordered my verlinden tarmac for runways and track

Just going to nip into Derby modelzone for some grass, wont need much as most will be tarmac.

Got a skaledale contol tower, but also purchased a made airfix one with refueling wagons of the bay this morning for a tenner....BARGAIN, ready made and painted.Take a bow son :D

so, how have you chaps attacthed the grass and tarmac to your boards? glue? clearly dont want to bubble the tarmac sheets or grassd areas?

your help would be much appreciated.:)

I just used the pva glue and placed it on the mat and the wooden board then stuck it down, then used a rollin pin to press out any bubbles haha. Worked a treat for me.

Looking forward to seeing the outcome. Don't forget the scenic background haha. I've also got the same control tower but not yet used it. Don't seem to have room. Think I need a bigger board.

Quite enjoyed watching it come together piece by piece. Thunder. Gave. Good hint, that was not to glue down the foliage etc so that you can place it anywhere anytime If you fancy a change :)

PVA, bonus, we flog that at work ;)

will put a few pics as i go along.

Not going to glue anything into postion for the same reasons suggested.

Backdrops will be the final addition, going to concentrate on lay out for the time bieng, as my board will be about 75% tarmac.

Also thinking of doing a flypast dio of the BBMF, as skalesale so a church thats very similar to church in my village, how cool what that look lol...nutter:wacko:

A BBMF flypast eh?

This i have to see :) just make sure its the Hurri in the foreground haha. Its much better looking than the Spit..... :D

I've been working all the hours god sends this week so not had much time to play around. Maybe tonight....... and maybe some pics with the camera if we've got it back.

I noticed you have a few jets in your collection, so tarmac would be good for you :) i have no jets and nothing but WW2 planes so i can get away with nothing but grass haha. Get in their my son.

Though i did try tarmac.... and it went disasterously wrong :(

Get them pics up!!

Dan214sqn

yeah few SELECT jets in the collection, im not a mad jet person, but a couple of examples float my boat.Mainly cold war stuff, the odd modern one has crept in here and there, as expected with these lot on ere  :LOL: so using mainly tarmac to cater for jets and WW2.

picking my grass up tonight, quite excited, need to get out more!!!

putting a large runway in as i have a 1/72 valiant to build soon, and when she is complete i think the dio would look great with her in taxi.:D

Sounds like you've got a great idea of what you want to do :D

I need to get myself some more grass after demolishing the last one quite badly haha.

Its great fun watching it all come together. Its taking the right shot i found to be annoying.

Recieved the "gentleman jim" P51 today so may try a photo op with that and a couple of other P51 legends... (im not a huge 51 fan haha).

prob more chance of coming under attack from the locals rather than jerry or the ruskys....but a pill box will act as a good deterrant :D

put the lawn down tonight, the white paper is going to be tarmac when it arrives.

Backdrops are clearly a must, and really finish off, but it will be the last thing i do, have a great idea part of the runway....all will be revealed shortly.;)

your thoughts are most welcome guys.chin chin :)

I love these dioramas, I'm working on one myself. Just about everything you need is available in 1/72, in some form or another - except for a hanger, or a HAS. There must be a market for that type of thing, shirley?

I've got the old Corgi/Metcalfe 1/144 one, which would just need scaling up (or is it down?). I've thought about copying it electronically and scaling it myself but printing it out will be next to impossible - presumably there will be copyright issues in getting that done commercially?

Anyway, looks good Dan, looking forward to the updates!

yup i see those huts they look pretty good compared to the hornby skaldale ones in theory your not loosing out much as those ones you have retail at about 15-17 pounds skaledale ones are about 7-8 pounds and half the size so your kinda breaking even really but for a better looking hut .

The list I made was from the monthly Corgi Direct catalogue that drops through the door.....the Charleville 110 wasn't in it so the website obviously has further discounted models.....

thanks mate, glad you liked it.

Fine place to start would be the first 74sqn tigers F Mk1a AA32301

74sqn were the first to get the lightning at coltishall in 1960, they got 1a's in 61 i think?? so this should fit into your era, there is a 92sqn F2 but im not sure of the year of that, i should imagine its pre-70's though.

or...the 111sqn version,F1A, lovely scheme, one of corgi's finest 1964 era

Nice new additions Dan:D I do like my 74sqn Phantom too:D Looks the biz, didnt go for the tiger scheme one but i have to say they do look good together.

One big difference with the gemini spook and the hobbymaster spook is the weight.Gemini one is really heavy and as you say it hard to call between them.I have 25+ hobbymaster spooks now so they must be doing something right:LOL:Thanks for posting Dan:D

Yeah, I dont know Dan, I am not quite sure Blenheim SQNs were part Bomber Command groups.

I could be wrong, they certainly conducted some early Bombing. I thought Early Bomber Command types were the Wellington, Whitley and Hampden.

I only say this as I went through this a while ago trying to find a Corgi Blenheim for my Bomber Command theme.

About time we had another CC Catalina, maybe Castle Archdale based. Would fit in nicely with the other NI based CC aircraft I have.

Still maintain John Cruikshank VC is a major ommission. Unbelievable his aircraft still hasn't been done.

Same could be said for a number of subjects. It's the only model that I want, that I don't have now, from the available castings. I would just like a NI one for some continuity. That still leaves quite a few to be done.

The CC Blenheim is for me the best Corgi so far, looks fantastic in that livery. I wouldn't want one of their Vampires out of the existing mould though, it's just wrong. An Anson would be a good one no doubt and sure to be on their to-do list. I love the Liberator, which appearance wise is not too far from the Shack, so if they can keep that style, it'll be a peach.

The new Airfix 1:1 model :D

This one skidded down a steep ice covered road and into a river ending up on it's roof. Several months after the battle of the bulge it was dragged up and is a memorial to the defeat of the axis. It was never secured so many collectors robbed it rotten and eventually it was welded shut but it's neglected these days.

1/32 scale version of BAC (EE) Lightning F6 XS923 - LTF 1986 RAF BINBROOK (where else:cool )

After getting airborne for the 1st time on 13th December 1966, this airframe joined 5sqn as 'M' in early-1967. By feb it had been recoded 'C'. It was overhauled by 60 MU in march 1970 and returned to its initial user codeed 'A'in july of that year. After further spells in maintenance and after reviving the tail code 'C', XS923 passed to 11sqn in aug 1978.It began as 'J' and later became 'BG' before 5sqn reclaimed it as their CO's mount, coded 'AA' fron jan '85. When it joined the LTF in feb '86 it wore the tactical scheme seen here.It remained the personel airframe of the unit CO and so the wing commanders pennant was displayed below the canopy. The jet ended its career with 11sqn but was out of action for a while as a result of a starter explosion. Upon withdrawal XS923 was one of 6 lightnings purchased br arnold glass and on 30th june 1988 sqn ldr john aldington (OC 11sqn) flew her last ever RAF lightning sortie into cranfield airfield. She was later dismantled on 2 dec 1994 and the nose cone section survives today in welshpool, with Dan Foster owning the port side serial.:D :D :D :D

Hope you like her chaps, you can really appreciate the scale when flying in formation with the 1/32 hurri/spit on each wing.Top top stuff.
