Got to be Taylor by a country mile! Take out the planes and the paintings still hold their own :)

The planes are detailed superbly and the backgrounds fit into the best traditions of English landscape art.

Taylor is the main man and I wish I could afford the odd original :)

Here are several American aviation artists to add to your poll of fine British ones:

Keith Ferris:
http://www.keithferrisart.com/
When his mammoth painting "Fortresses under Fire" was unveiled on the WWII gallery wall of the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum, a woman felt she recognized the oxygen-masked copilot of the leading aircraft as her husband. Research revealed she was correct. !!!!

Bill Phillips:
http://www.jaybrowngallery.com/phillips_prints_a-d.htm?OVRAW=bill%20phillips%20artist&OVKEY=bill%20phillips%20artist&OVMTC=standard
Especially evocative atmospheric effects.

R. G. Smith:

An engineer at Douglas Aircraft with painting as a hobby....??!!

Craig Kodera:

Atmospherics emulate Bill Phillips'.

Further candidates may be gleaned from the gallery of that nationally-famous and discerning dealer of aviation art from Great Britain:

Not to feel bad, Agent: one of my prized books is one volume of Robert Taylor's aviation paintings.

Perhaps more of interest to you, I also have his book on marine paintings.

Sublime. ;)

Robert Taylor ... not so much in my camp (you could seriously overdose with his output and there a couple or six in the Agent household) the signatures are what peeps are now collecting as these 'heroes' pass on.. and credit where credit is due he does now have some variance in the piccies he produces.. they were at one time getting very sameish.... some of the maritime / plane ones have been his best..

Naw I'll stick and prefer me Ferris and his B17 / FW190 combinations, David Shepherd (when hes not at the 'waterhole') Frank Wooton for the art, Terence Cuneo.. did a few planes in his time when not painting his trains.... can you find the mouse..? Wilf Hardy for the excellent 'airshow' covers. Roy Cross (the Airfix boxtop man.. sorry Roy)) John Young. Michael Turner.. Patricia Forrest produced a lovely set of Concordes recently, Alex Hamilton, his last Mossie was very tempting and Charles Thompson, again his C47 over the Himalayas at £1250 at the last annual GAVA exibition nearly got the credit card into overdrive..

.. and I havent mentioned Mr Coulson, Phillips Wong Postlethwaite and many others...

One mans meat.....

Yup. IMHO the main man and I agree not just because of the aircraft but for the land / sea and cloud scapes too.
But never mind the paintings, I'd give a lot just to be able to sketch like that ..... what that guy can do with a pencil alone is unbelievable.

They do allsorts... (when and if they have the time).. off the shelf and to order..

Bit like a piece of string here.. depends on what yer want, how big, medium, how difficult.. research etc etc..

BUT at the end of the day they do hold the copyright/publishing rights.....

This is The Website for Aviation Art (in the UK) and a yearly pilgrimage is a MUST and its free.. sorry you have to wait until next year now..

Gives you an idea on prices and from that you can see the likes of a Coulson is gonna cost yer five figures.. Robert Taylor I believe is a member (If you are anyone in the airplane painting world you will have GAvA after your name) but he does not participate in the exibitions.

Guild of Aviation Artists (http://www.gava.org.uk/index.cfm?page=thegallery&searchyear=2004)

Health Warning

The Galleries will take absolutely ages to go through and you should allow enough time to do this.. a full bottle of the red stuff is a must. Anything you really like will have been sold, if it has not, it will cost you a fortune and you may need to remortgage your residence or just spend the kids inheritance..!!

Health Warning Two

These people and the artists are very particular about their copyright and they will pursue anyone 'lifting' their images...

Happy Hunting..!!!

Michael Rondot is without a doubt the best for me. He just manages to capture something that's missing on other aviation artworks. I don't know what it is, just something "raw".
I also have a couple of large prints by Edward Ash, another fantastic artist based in Lincs. He is very passionate about what he does and he's is a pleasure to talk to.

Albert Ross
17th December 2004, 18:42
Michael Rondot - sorry don't like his stuff as he seems to take exactly the same background and just put a different aircraft type on it! How many have you seen of the aircraft 3/4-front lifting off from the same wet runway with black storm clouds in the skies - I've lost count! No enough variety of backgrounds. Robert Taylor and Gerald Coulson, both superb artists!

Hello all
I have paintings by 2 Artists, Taylor and Trudgian.

IMHO Taylors best must be 'Knights OF The Eastern Front', While 'Trudgian's is Their Finest Hour'. I have them both, so I am biased... very biased in fact.

I think (painful process) Taylor produces a more real looking picture. Trudgians are good but they are somewhere between a model box picture and a chocolate box lid. I have into the 'Into the cloak of darkness' print and I feel I should buy a matching set of curtains to go with it !!

I would like to know who produced the Airfix Box pictures of the 1970,s. They were really good. The Wellington with one engine out, low over the sea has to be the best. Ah, but what about G-George comming home with its engine on fire. !

Roy Cross has become something of a cult figure - deservedly so - and a book featuring a lot of his Airfix work came out a few years ago.

They must have sold many many kits for Airfix..... certainly the best range of boxes.. the ones before were all line drawings, the ones after with the actual model were really poor... and today's attempts are equally as shoddy..

Naw.. Cross is by far the best... as they say every picture tells a story...

He exibits at the GAvA from time to time... circa £2500 for a little number ... last time was 2004..

Hello all
While looking through my vast colection of seventies porno mags, I came across (no pun intended) a 14th Addition of the Airfix Catalouge (1977). This desirable piece of literature has all the old model box art on display. From this priceless artifact I have produced a top ten :

Series 4 Wellington (low over the sea on one engine)
Series 12 Spitfire (Kiwi)
Series 5 B17 (Engaging a fw 190 at close quaters)
Series 6 Sunderland (Ending that Condor moment)
Series 7 B29 (Eddie Allan imports US made goods to Japan)
Series 3 Mosquito (anti shipping at low level)
Series 5 Lancaster (George comes home on three engines)
Series 3 Spitfire & ME110 Double ( Johny lights up the Me110 engine)
Series 4 Donnier Do217 ( downing lancs over the target)
Series14 Huricane ( Gleed gets one me110 and looks for the next)

If only my scana was not bust... I could share these with you... oh pity pity

Roy Cross now has quite a successful career in painting ships, actually. He "hasn't achieved the success" of painters like the ones you mention cos he decided that "even the likes of Frank Wootton couldn't elevate aviation art to the rank of established fine art field. Perhaps it's still too new."

(Courtesy of 50 Years of Airfix by Arthur Ward)

Roy Cross, Geoff Nutkins and Frank Wootton are my favourite aviation artists, especially thanks to an image of a NA Mustang I of Sarnia Imperials over a V1 site on tactical recon by Wootton...

Now there's a model!

Geoff's superb painting of a Do 17Z being intercepted featured in the BoB 60th edition of Flypast, and I loved it!

I hate over stylised paintings though. The worst I've seen was one of a flight of Spits flying very, very low over a couple of kiddies (who were waving to the Spits) sitting on a gate at the edge of a field, in which a tractor was gathering up the crop, whilst a steam train passed by! Horrendous!

(Apologies in advance if the guy who painted that is on here, but I don't particularly like that kind of work)

That was what I was thinking, but otherwise an extremely nice painting. Maybe it's the white cliffs of Malta :D

Lot of them especially Mr Phillips and Mr Stokes seem to believe that the UK is technicolour, oops techincolor.. when of course everyone knows it should be Supermarionation... :D ( Especially Stan Stokes, but thats more a style..)

Paradise with a pier..

...I think, well I always have a thought or two as to what it must have been like Summer 1940 as yer cross the coast safely ensconsed in your easysomething cigar tube and look down on the white cliffs... (thing is it never looks that blue... although summer 40 was especially nice..)

with all these books about by fighter pilots there must be some reference to the sea as they were climbing high before they "got busy", cant think of any though

I have spent a couple of weekends sailing a friends yacht off North Wales back in August and more recently in mid October (when it was still 21 degrees centigrade and brilliant sunshine/cloudless sky) and the sea really did look Mediterranean blue around the Lleyn Peninsula. Friends thought the photos were taken in Gibraltar!!! :)

Then theres the 1/72 Mustang, was it 'Fools Paradise',about to get the chop from a FW 190, and the rocket firing Gustav.

Hello Prune old boy.
I was confussed when you described this mustang box. I could not remember it ! But I have now found a picture on the model box you decribe. It was a series one kit and did not actually come in a box. But you are right, its a great picture again.

Regards
David

You wuz talking bout the Channel.

Great memory of mine- walking along the NT path at Langdon- the Channel wuz quite blue!

Course, there's also the wet day when I went to the cafe at the end of the Pier in Dover- orrible that was!

I have a couple of Roland Wong prints 1 of them signed by the man himself, its the FRADU Hawks on top of HMS Cornwall. I bought this at RNAS Culdrose. Also have 'Maverick' print which is of a GR7 screaming through the Welsh valleys armed with said missile.

Also have Fieldcraft by Philip West and Robert Tomlin's 'For Real', both of these depict Harrier GR7s'.

Desperate to get hold of Robert Tomlin's latest 801 squadron Sea Harrier print.
