The latest BBMF Supporters Club ( otherwise known as the Lincs Lanc Assoc ) magazine has just arrived and it's a superb effort.

Now looking very professional indeed with plenty of colour pics, it's got some 'original' stuff which is well worth reading, including a recent interview with Richard Todd about 'The Dam Busters', a very nice article about the 'forgotten Lanc' ( KB889 at Duxford ) and a fascinating article about Grand Slam by 617 historian Jim Shortland.

The last article conclusively answers the question as to the correct colour for the Grand Slam bomb. It is......

Join the LLA and find out ! :p

Absolutely - for the money - it is a top notch cause, and excellent publication and the members day is well worth it.

The memory last year of the Lanc appearing over the trees in the distance followed closely by the Spits and Hurri in a V formation is still the number one pant soiling moment of the year   :D

The latest 'Memorial Flight' arrived late last week and is a truly excellent magazine. It's literally going from strength to strength ; production quality is very high ( up to FlyPast standards ) and there are some fascinating articles, including a study of Metheringham airfield and the early airshow history of PA474...plus a mouthwatering aerial double spread of the BBMF over Buck House in July.....

All in all, a real treat. If you haven't yet joined, feel ashamed - and you're really missing out on something, too !

Hmm. Searched HIGH and low last night in between other things, but cannot find the summer edition too Neil.....

Will have to give them a ring and see what they say.... :( Funny as I sent them payment because I gave them some extra as a donation. :)

Aha... Postie brought it and delivered it today!!

Wow, nice magazine and see what you mean MB, well detailed, good pictures and some very interesting articles that even I was unaware of locally... For one, the Anson factory at BB (Bracebridge for non locals) I didn't even know once existed. Very interesting indeed....

I think they do have some outlets, factory warehouses up there as it looks like the A15 heading to Sleaford near Waddington, but houses the other side now more so.....

Another couple of interesting articles and a question for one member of the Forum when he appears.... Sailor, are you a member of the LLA? If so, check Page 32-33 when it arrives. ;)

Martin Bull
13th December 2005, 14:46
I used to regularly drive through Bracebridge Heath on the A15 in the late '80s and was fascinated by the Duxford-style Belfast Truss hangars on the right-hand side of the road ( Northbound ). I believe they were demolished about five years ago....

CFBC
13th December 2005, 15:08
Actually M/B I believe they were demolished a few more years ago than that and yes I do recall them being there, but not really paying them much attention. (Northbound heading into town obviously) :)

There is a haulage firm that I used to deal with that worked out of them a few years ago.....

I didn't know they used to build Ansons at that place though...

is that the bit where the 'classic car' spares place is..?? looks like a couple of hangars there that have been re-clad.. didnt they also assemble the avro 707 (mini Vulcan) and test fly it from waddo (after towing it down the A15?)

got the latest edition yesterday... and it spills the beans about PA474s next paint scheme - Phantom Of The Ruhr... looking forward to seeing that.! also noted that the visitors centre and Hangar tours incude more weekend dates this year.. and there was a copy of this years BBMF brochure.. but i'm sure you already know this as Mr Bull must've persuaded you all to join LLA by now??!:D :D

Yes - a real 'bumper' delivery from the LLA ! The magazine is packed full of interest including a fascinating article about 'Dambuster' Les Munro, and the Annual Brochure is absolutely mouthwatering.

In terms of what you actually get for your money, LLA is just about the best aviation-related organization to join.

Wouldn't have known about the LLA until picked up this thread in the forum.

Sounds well worth the money; form in the post! Am sure other warbird nuts would want to do likewise if they knew about it...

Yes tis another good read.

In you think that's good Red2, attend the members day in September at Coningsby - Lanc and Spitfires flying straight over your head.

Marvellous.......

Sounds good, when is it?

Must however say that all this talk of the sound of Merlins overhead (the original RR lest X20 is monitoring ;) ) is not good for me when it is still another month till my first Duxford fix of the year....... :D

The Autumn 2007 edition of 'Memorial Flight' just fell through the letterbox - no doubt about it, this publication goes from strength to strength.

This one has a full colour round-up of the 2007 season, plenty of stuff about the Shackleton and Vulcan at Newark, a terrific full-colour spread of 'POTR' overflying the Derwent Dam, a history of RAF Wickenby ( complete with some 'then & nows' ) and perhaps best of all, a well-desrved article about a truly unsung hero of the Dams Raid, Les Knight.

Wonderful stuff ! :)

The Spring 2009 issue of Memorial Flight is in and credit must go where it's due ....

It has now expanded in size by 50% and the quality of articles is now very high indeed. MF has always been a 'class act' but previously it used to consist mainly of interesting snippets of info about the BBMF. It still has these, of course, but it's really expanded into a very informative 'Bomber Command' magazine - this issue has full-length features about Woodhall Spa ( a 'Then & Now' type article complete with a return to the airfield with Colin Cole ), a previously-unpublished interview with an Augsburg raid survivor, a ( deeply interesting ! :) ) article about a 627 Squadron Mossie crew, Jim Shortland and Colin Cole reminiscing about a visit to the scene of the Tirpitz raid and an interview with Colin about his first operational trip - to sink the Tirpitz !

Get the drift ?

All in all, essential reading for DAF-types !

Sounds like I must get one. We usually stay in Woodhall Spa during the Waddo weekend. Always visit the Dam Busters memorial and occasionally have coffee at the Petwood but never got round to having a good look at the airfield.

My now-usual plug for Memorial Flight magazine....the Autumn 2009 one just arrived, well up to usual standard. Focus this month is on 625 Squadron's Lancasters flying from Kelstern, with a revisit of the old airfield and a veteran's account of a December '44 op, plus a photographic review of the BBMF in 2009 and a glorious centre-spread of Spitfire P7350 in its new livery ( the photographic quality is, as always now, excellent ). Oh - and there's even that shot of the low-level CWH Lanc which featured on this Forum over the last week.

Great stuff !

the photo of P7350 in its 92 Sqn markings is worth the price of admission alone...unfortunately I don't think I'll be buying any of them "Artique" Chrimbo cards...mininum order 100 cards   ...yer avin a larf...
