View Full Version : 1/8th scale Fokker DR1 triplane

I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with this build.

It is the rerelease of the Hasegawa triplane by Hachette and is overall an excellent model to build. It is very heavy due to the large amount of white metal used in the parts.

Having looked at an original model I would say that this is certainly on a par with it if not slightly better. Included is a full plastic film roll for the entire skinning of the aeroplane.

It is not for new modellers as there is a tremendous amount of filing and sanding to do.

Pictures later tomorrow.

Old_un,

Looking forward to this. I do remember an old 'Scale Models' article(s) about building the original Hasegawa model by, I think, Ray Rimmel. Did Hasegawa also release the plastic engine as a separate kit?

They also made a 1/8th SE5.a?

the_old_un
5th August 2011, 22:52
In all they made four models from the mid 70's. the first three being in 1/8th scale and the last one in 1/16th. They were known as the museum quality models.

They produced several small kits of 1/8 portraying the Lewis and Vickers gun. And as Shuttle rightly says they also made the stand alone engines for the Triplane and Camel. Both in plastic and one in metal. Superb kits.

They were retailing at £150+ in them days and until recently the four aeroplanes achieved a grand easily on the bay. They have all dropped to around £500 now due to the kids rumiging through grandpas collection and  sticking them on the bay. I was luckily enough to get all the models in mint condition and save them for a rainy day. The ones in scuffed and or torn boxes I will make.

The 1/8 ones were the superb RAF (Royal Aircraft Factory) SE5A, Sopwith Camel and the Fokker DR1. The 1/16 is the Wright Flyer of course.

They proved to be to expensive and design and production ceased. :(

They are by far the best large scale kits ever produced IMHO.

Old_un,

I think my favourite was the SE.5a. I was working in Beatties at Holborn when these kits were for sale and remember selling a few. I nearly bought the SE.5a at the time but it was a bit too expensive (even with the 33% discount we got....). What a mistake.

 Shuttle

This wont be a fully comprehensive build like the Lancaster as there are several detailed builds of this model out there. I will show what I think are the necessary changes to the instructions which should enhance the models appearance and make it stronger where this needs to be done. Superglue is fine but has its limitations (as Eastwood would say :D )

First a couple of views of the glossy brochure.

Lastly the size of this model (and its the smallest of them all)

The first part to be built was the front undercarriage winglet

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0253.jpg

Straight forward construction but ensure that it doesnt twist (heavy even weights for a few days.

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0254.jpg

Several parts of this model look best uncovered. The wood is far to clean so a thin wash of brown makes it more realistic.

They sugest superglueing the legs  Drill a few holes and secure with 5ba or similar nuts and bolts. Far easier to take appart if needed.

There are 100 issues in all and the next ones deal with the engine assembly

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0259.jpg

There are nine cylinders and its very heavy when completed

Now a view of the back end with the pipes and exhausts.

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0257.jpg

Barnes is 1/32 and it gives you a good idea of the size.

Construction can be a little on the fidly side and every cylinder head has to be heavily filed to ensure a good fit

Forgot to mention that this model appears on the bay quite often and price is always between £100 and £140. Worth every cent ;)

The 1/72 Airfix alongside one wheel

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0255.jpg

The original wheels are spoked and to aid streamlining a little canvas was added to cover them up. The finish is excellent.

Here is the tail plane in etched primer. The frame is made from solid brass bars from 1mm to 3mm thick. The ribs are white metal (Zamac castings). These are very difficult to solder so need to be held together with a fuse type wire and glued with either jellied super glue or two part Araldite type adhesives.

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0263.jpg

The control horns for elevators, rudder etc are operated by the control stick in the cockpit.

The prop is made from layers of wood with seven layers exactly like the real one

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0273.jpg

The makers label is supplied

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0274.jpg

All that is required is filing to receive the centre boss and some very fine sand paper to smooth the blades and finish off with a nice satin varnish.

The few chrome plated parts supplied have corroded slightly through age. They needed a really good rub down with wet n dry to remove the coating completely. When resprayed the result is great

The side wood veneers are meant to replicate those on the real machine. The idea being to stop the sound of billowing canvas when flying.

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp221/jodanestew/DSCN0307.jpg

I have made them detachable for access to the cockpit. Also there is no natural curve so I used brass wire bent to shape and sown to the veneer.

So you are getting this week on week along with yer Lancaster...?

the_old_un
11th August 2011, 21:57
Gawdy nah...............

I trawled the bay for a few weeks and found job lots of 100 issue lots for sale. All were complete partworks unbuilt collections and I bought three separate lots for a ton. Sold two lots and ended up building the third which are the photos you see here.

All I am doing is pointing out various different ways of building it without going into minute detail like the Lancaster.

The Hasegawa models are almost identical except have the fancy boxes and fancy rediculous prices to match.

There is a lot of two up for sale on the bay ATM fit for spares. Not sure if I want to pay HMRC and import taxes tho :D

The Hasegawa model differs in the way some parts are made. Several are similar but very few are identical.

These are very large kits to build and require some skills and experience in constructing mainly wooden componants. They certainly pass the time and the results can be fantastic. They can just as easily be rushed and the phrase "I dont need any destructions to knock these together" can result in being disastrous.

With my eyesight I need big things to make!

That would be a heck of a shame. Wish I had the space, the funds and the means of transport.
Not worth relisting on the 'Bay again? Sometimes persistence pays off.

4th time? No interest at all. Yes lots of lookers but we know what they are?

I have no where to store the monster so it has to go one way or another but it was fun to build :D

Reminds me of a guy that built a huge Lancaster a few years ago and on its maiden flight it veered on take off into parked cars. Cost him hundreds to rebuild it.
