View Full Version : What happened to 1:144 scale?

Why does Corgi make 1:72 Liberators and Wimpeys but not the same aeroplanes in 1:144? Is this scale dead? Couldn't these 1:72 aircraft be easily scaled down to 1:144 to keep we 1:144 collectors happy?
I love my Corgis but sometimes I just don't understand!
I also wonder why we don't have a 1:144 Sterling, Hampden, or Hallifax?
Or Catalina? But perhaps its just me.

Goonybird are you shouting or are you tense? :D Thats okay, Corgi makes me tense at times too! I'd be more relaxed if they made a Valiant and I wouldn't have to change my name to Vbombers2. ha ha

The name change can soon be done, be careful VB3...... We have been asking and asking for the third "V" as we have been a Typhoon, nothig so far, but I like to keep a positive mind personally (what mind I have after so much flak), so lets hope for this next release of the 2nd half of 2005 or 2006.... (Think positive)... :)

I think in the short to medium term they will be concentrating on getting the core side of the business straight ( 1:72 ) so that may need to be 2007 -2008 .

Agent X20
5th April 2005, 10:08
All this talk about core business... its all been covered.. moving into all these estoteric subjects such as Stirlings or Valiants requires a different tack otherwise after the first couple of thousand, it will be dump bin city.. pity... Might just get it from a '72 Tiffie but they is fast running out of viable subjects...

Cure.. another half dozen of Liberators... cant get enough Libbies... make Lofty's day..

I love the corgi 1/44th bombers. I would quite happily trade all my 1/72 bombers fot the third V bomber. Corgi are missing out by not doing more 1/44th. It is so easy to build up a large collection with little space and money by collecting 1/44th.

That's exactly spot on Agent Carr. I can have a decent collection of small scale models and fit them all into a reasonable space. I think the Corgi 1:144 models are special but I see that other companies are nipping on there heels.

Watch out Corgi! I think the only way you can maintain your lead is to make a 1:144 Valiant and a VC10 for Agent X20. ha ha!

Albert Ross

I quite agree with you and I shall strive to get Corgi to bring you more 1/144th models. Not a Valiant this year, but a.......... ;)

Why, Agent, have you turned your back on your heritage? Proper British designation = VC10, no hyphen. But small matter, go right on ahead. We Yanks love hyphens. :D

Hmmmm, just managed to acquire all 18 Corgi Viscounts after a lengthy and epic struggle. Laughed maniacally....."Mine! Mine! They're all mine, do you hear? I've got 'em all....AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

There's another one coming?

Agent X20
6th April 2005, 19:45
Yep.. BOAC Viscount..

goonybird
6th April 2005, 19:50
Congrats Bob. they make a nice set. Which one is your favorite?

I think the new one is BEA union flag, others believe it's the rarely spotted BOAC gold speedbird scheme. I would rather have both! Greedy aren't I !! :D

The nice thing is, unlike brown/grey/green spitfires, there are loads of Viscounts schemes in all variety of colors. Do that, and Corgi would make me and others very happy. Doesn't take much.

Agent X20
6th April 2005, 19:57
They are going to do both.. two for the price of one...

How refreshing.. how heinkelkin.....

Most probably the best die casts in the world.. :D :D :D

.. ah a third BEA Viscount..!! aaargh..

Yeah.. come on Bob... whats yer favourite.. KLM.. Bass or the NBA..!!

Bill Risbridger

And whats wrong with a third BEA viscount? It the one we need to complete the set of BEA. Well nearly (channel Islands, Scottish airways etc and various sub divisions) Oh and Cambrian.

I'm mostly fond of the more colourful and glossy ones, Goony.
Some of my favourites thus far are:
Aer Lingus (high gloss, impeccable paint job and tampo printing)
Capital Airlines (same remarks apply. Saw these as a boy at Philadelphia International Airport and always wanted one)
United Airlines (saw these as well).
BEA (new). Blue & white with red wings. How could you not like this one?
Northeast Airlines. Anything painted this awful yellow color needs love. :D

I'm fond of the RAE bird, although I have to wear sunglasses whenever I look at it, it's so bright and colorful. Visitors always single this one out.
Love the Club model ETPS bird, too, with that splash of Day-glo orange here and there. The KLM Viscount (which I understand is Albert's) is a favorite: the striping on the vertical fin/rudder is precisely done and the whole looks very smart.

But for sheer weak-in-the-knees effect, I'd go with the Polished Metal TAA bird. Corgi (Albert?) clearly used the Profile Publications Ltd. monograph on the Viscount which showed this aircraft in a color 5-view spread. Very nice, indeed.

All of which illustrates why 1/144 appeals to collectors. These models are nice as individual pieces go, but when you have all 18 of 'em on glass shelves in an illuminated cabinet, the collection becomes synergistic: the whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts. The collection looks very flashy, and it don't take up much of yer room, either. ;)

Well I trust you will be posting the Vickers 18 Viscounts in an inverted loop .. all together, one at a time now.. over Stillwater..

Bill Risbridger
6th April 2005, 20:29
I agree with your list of favourite Viscounts there Bob and would add that the British Midland is another very well executed model.

If I had to list the more disappointing Viscounts they would be:-

British Eagle because the logo on the tail slopes whereas it should be straight.
Parcel Force because the fuselage windows are too low.
British Airways because the airline name on the port side slopes.
Also I would love Corgi to re-do the early BEA (700 series) Viscount in polished finish and this time use red paint instead of orange!

Agent X20
6th April 2005, 20:35
So... your red square BEA Viscount logo is straight.... dont tell anyone then..
Agreed.. polished metal BEA mark one markings.. mmmmm.... NICE...

Bill Risbridger

your right Agent, never noticed that before. Come to think of it, the tail logo on the Aer Fungus is a bit pi**ed too.

Agree that the Viscount is a fine model.Still got the BAF and the TAA ones to get to complete the set so if they come up on the bay, gimme a chance :D .

As for favourites i think the RAE, Aer Lingus and the BMA are pretty  .

Also hope there is gonna be a BOAC one in the second half releases closely followed by a Cambrian ;) .

Agent X20

The TAA one was available at a very reasonable price from a dealer the other day..
