Thats a genuine paint scheme... yes really... it was the 15,000th fighter built by Curtis-Wright and they painted it up in the markings of all their customers!
doesnt mean I'd want one though... ;)

Pity the pilot who flew it,that is asking to be shot down.

A bit difficult to tell friend from foe. Maybe hedging one's bets?

I'm not so sure, some of those roundals look too recent. I need a while to check though.

Duno what year the a/c was produced/painted-up, but its pictured (well painted actually) on the cover of the Bruce Robertson/Harleyford book 'Aircraft camouflage and markings 1907-1954'.. that look like a Taiwan/ROC roundel on there somewhere so thats gotta be post war...

Uhh, that would be Chiang's Nationalist Chinese insignia. I think this was around '44.

According to 2 sources that I have looked at the number of P40s built totalled 13738, the last one coming off the assembly line in December 1944.

The Nationalist Chinese emblem was used on P40s of the American Volunteer Group in 1941/42 before they were transferred to the USAF 23rd Pursuit Group.

Just found another book which has a photo of this particular aircraft. Part of the caption includes "To commemorate building 15,000 fighters of all types...." IE, the figure of 15,000 is not just P40s.

Just for info, the foreign operators include the RAF, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Nationalist China, The Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Soviet Union, and Turkey. At least one former Soviet P40 was captured and flown in Finnish markings.

Just think of all the really interesting schemes that will be available for Corgi. They will have to do a Ruski one to match the Hurri.. Ah, I forgot, they haven't done that one yet have they?
