That's actually quite an addictive site, Minter ! I've checked into it regularly over the last couple of years.

yeah, think some of these guys are lucky living near battlefileds, if i lived in belgium near the ardennes or say france near Falaise i would be always "out and about", the nearest i can get to that sort of thing is Tynam in Dorset, a village that was taken over by the military pre D-day for exersises and is still as it was left after they had finished with it ,the modern army uses ranges near there, and you can pick up brass tank shell cases by the handful

I was interested in the page titled Canadian B17 crash site. It dosen't explain why they think it was a Canadian crew so perhaps some one could enlighten me.

I know that the RAF tried out the early model B17(C?) on daylight operations and that may have included a Canadian crew but they say the aircraft was the later B17G. As far as I know the RAF only used this model with Coastal Command and I have never heard of Canadian crews flying with the USAF?

Good point, DCRanger. I think the give-away is the 'according to locals' comment, local rumour and hearsay can be notoriously inaccurate. In the UK for instance, just about every crash site is 'a Spitfire' if it's a fighter, or 'a Lancaster' if it's a bomber, and 'a Stuka' if it's German.....

If it's a B-17F or G flying in that area, it really must be USAAF.
The only 'Canadian aircraft' as such were in 6 Group ( Lancs and Hallies ), otherwise crews contained Canadian crewmembers but wouldn't really be classified as all-Canadian.

Interesting site there Minter.. think I'll save that one for my next night shift!

i did take a peek though at 'the holland hole' section where they'd dug up what amounts to equip taken from German prisoners.. interesting how poorly much of it survived compared to other sites, must be down to the composition of the soil..

Neil.
