A big thank you to the Volunteer helper who showed us around - he claimed to work there, but had the cleanest pair of overalls on I have ever seen :D :D

Is that overspray I see on that tail  :D

I DID try and smuggle the one in Tiffies pics home, but it looked a bit too suspect in the back of the car...:D

However, I think this one could have been a safer bet!! :)

A thank you does go out to the Mossie helper of the day. Think we took "the shine" off the new overalls, not the boots!! ;)

This place deserves our support lads..... So do the volenteers, helpers and the board that run it... They had some very nice "signed" prints and pieces that are certificated from the prototype Mosquito. A great charity.

Well worth a vist. :)

been a couple of years since I last went, but I can only reinforce CFBC's recomendation to have a look round.. nice Dove on the gate, a trident, front end of a Comet, Sea Vixen, Hs125... and of course several examples of 'the balsa wood bomber' !!! :p Mr Martin Bull is also a fan of the place I understand, which should be recomendation enough for anyone! :p

It seems that arriving too early is a common occurrence at this place. I did the same thing when I called in a few years ago on the way back from a trip to France. I was spotted as I was about to leave and given a conducted tour.

Well worth a visit.

D/C... We arrived down there at 9.30ish with a three car/van tailback... Now if that was Up-North it would have been a traffic jam, but down South it was more of a tailback.... It then eventually turned into a car park.... Reminded me of the M25..... :D (just joking).

Had to get Typhie to guide me around.. Not used to being that far South.. Even he got confused too....

Thing I find remarkable about that place is that it is about 5 miles away from the main De Havillands aerodrome at Hatfield where initial Mossie production commenced. As Hatfield was attracting Luftwaffe attention, development work then commenced on the night fighter version at Salisbury Hall which is basically a manor house surrounded by rolling farm fields..whilst it aint hilly it aint exactly level.....with the prototype n/f being built there. Having assembled said machine, rather than break it up and take it by road to Hatfield, which would have lost valuable time.. it was flown straight out the field.. 10 mins later it was at Hatfield..

Trouble is .. it will be all thats left of Hatfield... apart from a few road names, be bugger all of it left by the time the developers get their way...   Even the Comet Hotel, sorry Ramada Jarvis..has a solitary Comet print hanging in its entrance way.... progress.. bah humbug...

Used to be great fun as a kid... Victors at Radlett.. and then Tridents at Hatfield..

Thought I'd recycle this thread instead of starting a new one.....;)

The Mossie Museum ( sorry, De Havilland Heritage Centre ) opened its doors to the public again today after the Winter lay-off. FBVI TA122 has now had its fuselage painted in the colours it carried during WWII and looks good alongside B.35 TA634 ;

Work is progressing well on the wing of the FBVI : here's the Museums' Richard Benham and Colin Ewer cutting yet another sheet of ply to fit...

Someone on another Forum had asked just exactly what did a Pathfinder Mossie Navigator do ? ...and I was able to have a long chat with Reg Davey ( ex-139, 627 Squadron ) and got the 'gen' from the horse's mouth.

Just saw this museum advertised in Flypast with a free entry voucher, must pay a visit this year if I can. There are some nice WWII colour pics of Mossies in the back of this months copy of the Aeroplane mag - all part of an ad for the new Crecy Publishing 2 volume work on the Mossie which looks pretty amazing if you are a Mossie fan - literally 100s of photos!

When the weather's good - which it certainly wasn't last Sunday - the hangar doors are opened leaving TA634 almost outside allowing for good photos. ( It used to be buried at the rear of the hangar and there was quite a battle with the Civils enthusiasts to have the B.35 in pride of place....;) )

It is a work of great diligence and commitment - I have read many a Mossie book in my time and 90% of the photos were new to me - no great revelations in the [minimal] text but its still a story worth telling

Dashed up to the Museum today to get some photos of FB.VI TA122...because just a few days ago, fuselage and wing were successfully mated ( something many thought might never happen ). TA122 now actually looks like an aircraft again, rather than a kit of parts.....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMuseum012.jpg

Two of the Museum's senior figures (and distinguished Mosquito authors both) Ian Thirsk and Philip Birtles admire the result - in front of them is a beautifully-restored bomb-bay door...

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMuseum003.jpg

The Brownings were temporarily removed during the lifting process to minimise weight ; they'll soon be re-fitted and so (it is hotly rumoured) will be some cannon.....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMuseum008.jpg

It's incredible to think that the wing section was found many years ago, in very derelict condition on a Kibbutz in Israel. Colin Ewer ( in red shirt ) has put in many hundreds of hours of hard work on the wing and is justifiably proud of the result...

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMuseum005.jpg

There's much work still to be done, of course - but nearly all parts have now been sourced. Next job is the undercarriage so that the aircraft can sit on its wheels again for the first time in 60 years. All in all, quite a landmark in the story of this genuine WWII veteran airframe, and the only FB.VI in the Northern Hemisphere.....

A quick call-in today in very summery weather ; shop doing really well on ice-creams !

TA122 really starting to come together well now - quite a lot of the undercarriage now in place plus the rad fairings to give the aircraft a more recognizable look ( note tyre ready and waiting, plus beautifully-restored .303 ammo boxes lying on table ....) .....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus013.jpg

The TA122 team were hard at work restoring a pair of Mossie wheels - rare items these, made from magnesium alloy.....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus010.jpg

And a recently-donated handbuilt 1/6-scale model of B.MkIX 'F' ( the highest-mission Mossie which was destroyed in Canada post-war ) was being manouevred in by John Stride and Bob Glasby...

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus006.jpg

A good spring-clean is underway with a more focussed approach to 'key projects' which means that some large items will be disappearing into 'deep storage'. I went for a stroll 'round the back to look at some of these objects which have been hidden in undergrowth. Like this huge RR Avon 208 jet engine from a Sea Vixen....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus011-1.jpg

I even did some work for a change ( ) helping to push a Venom and some engines around before buying a book in the shop as usual and heading for home....;)

So, instead of going to Duxford I popped up to the Mossie Museum ; much more relaxed this week after the frenzied signing event last Sunday

Since the wing/fuselage of TA122 was mated, great strides have been made ; here's a quick photo-update....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus014.jpg

Here's a general view ; note the two pristine Rolls-Royce Merlins....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus022.jpg

Last time I referred to the very rare wheels ; they've now gone from this....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus026.jpg

...to this.....

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus024.jpg

Here's a good example of the work carried out at the Museum ; a complete outer wing leading edge. As with so much of this work, when the aircraft is complete and on display - no-one will be able to see it ! :(

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus018.jpg

And the view that everyone likes...

http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus027.jpg

With a little luck and a lot of effort, these may be joined by 4 Hispanos and by this time next year TA122 may be sitting on its undercarriage for the first time in 50+ years......

Martin Bull
12th October 2009, 07:37
Strictly static this one, as the wings were sawn off back in the 1950s...:(

WARNING : Post for Mossie Nutters Only.

The good news from the Mossie Museum is that the FB.VI engines will shortly be stuck onto the wings......for the first time in over 50 years.....

Had some fun digging exhaust stubs out of the stores last Sunday. TA122 was originally going to have the early 'trombone' manifolds with exhaust shrouds (boring !). It was finally decided that everyone associates the FB.VI with five-stub exhausts as used on the Amiens Raid, etc. Post-war Mossies have six-stub exhausts : -

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus009.jpg

This is actually fun for me as I well remember the trouble over getting five-stub ones on Corgi's Gibson Mossie - Mr Wong kept reverting to a six-stub 'default position' Anyhow, the prototype Mossie at the Museum will have the 'trombones', the B.35 has the six-stubs in the above pic. The two-into-one stubs are as rare as hen's teeth, and here they are with years of cobwebs removed...

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/jgfive/MossieMuseum/MossieMus030.jpg

Nope. :( Prototype is too valuable and is in fact listed as a 'National Treasure' . TA122 - main spar was cut in half many years ago. B.35 - possible delamination means it'd never get a CAA permit to fly.

Main hope lies with the New Zealand ones and yes...they are replicas.

That was the original idea, but the Insurance companies wanted £gazillions to offer any cover. Seems they're not too keen on the idea of firing up 2 x 1500hp Merlins in a wooden frame in the very constricted space available at the Museum.

However, great care has been taken to replace all original wiring, instruments, pumps etc in perfect order. So maybe, possibly, one day......................

I've just been browsing the relevant thread on Key ( first time I've been there for ages). It's a shame - the thread starts out with really informed comment and sensible discussion and then - as nearly always seems to be the case - degenerates into one-line 'oh yes you did oh no I didn't' stuff

If the Mossie Museum had a pound for every time someone asked 'Are any of these going to fly?' there'd be one in the air right now.....

The loss of RR299 was one of the saddest Warbird accidents and we'd all love to see a Mossie in the skies again. It's a very. very difficult thing and a LOT of money would be needed ( and people ! It's tough just to find anyone to volunteer their spare time to sweep the floors or run the shop at the Mossie Museum :( ) ...and that includes me ; I can never spare the time I'd like to.

The DHAMT has to focus on something, and that is to restore and keep in public view the World's only surviving protype WWII aircraft and also the only surviving Mossie FB.VI. Sounds easy - but it isn't.:(

As an aside - the World of Warbird restoration is unbelievable for skullduggery ! Makes the Witty Javelin argument look like a kindergarten dispute.......If I repeated any of the gossip I hear, the Forum would be closed down for libel immediately................

As an aside - the World of Warbird restoration is unbelievable for skullduggery !

Isn't the biggest problem the souvenir hunters....?...:D :D :D

Absolutely - that grey bit behind me didn't fetch half as much on e-bay as I expected it to....;)

I've been press-ganged into going up again this Sunday ( Mrs B les than amused.... )

Actually did something useful for a change and removed the 'saxophone' exhausts from the FB.VI Merlin 25's.....very fiddly ( imagine doing that sort of thing on a windy dispersal in Norfolk... )

And if you've wondered why they're called 'saxophone' exhausts.....

Exhausts on - the first time that the five-stub layout has been seen on a UK Mosquito engine since the loss of RR299 in 1996. These are absolutely correct for the FB.VI.

TA133 is looking more and more like a complete aircraft - we're all dead keen to see the engines in place.

Today was the first day of 2012 when the Museum's open to the public. Do try to visit if you're down this way ! :)

Great shots, but I reckon that Sax pose was all part of your ploy to get it up your jacket...  ;) :D
