View Full Version : Most convincing (realistic) 1:72 you own?

Not necessarily the most accurate (swastika thread.......etc!) but the one which looks most like a miniture plane rather than a model.

Mine is the Dragon Wings ME109G-2 tropical. Great model, well designed undercarraige and nothing drops off this one.

for me its the grunhertz BF109G or the wender FW190A3
pity about the swastikas.. but thats already been flogged to death !

Davebowden...good choice!

Shuttle, Charley....is that the 'Immelman'? If so that's good news as I have one on the way. I have all the others and think they are great (best Corgi's to date for me!)

Gotta agree with G-Force; the camo Bucc followed by the gray/white RN Bucc. I'm also excited re the rasberry ripple version. Now, if only they would do the 208 Sqdn Anniversary bird, after all, its arguable that the raspberry ripple versions were one offs, so it wouldn't be breaking new ground.

Yep.. for some reasons the Stuka IMHO is in a league of its own as a diecast...no undercart to lose.. well there has to be one and this one does have memories for those who built the 1/32 Revell model...

P51D
20th April 2005, 21:08
Yea I forgot about that one (P51 BBD) I liked the Corgi version but that one got boxed the day I got the Dragon!

"Snake" is probably the best of the Stuks I have to date. Looking forward to comparing with the BOB one when it arrives.

(Different topic I know but...) noticed some guys on the forum have loads (well up to 3 anyway) of the exact same models! I think i'm missing the point here, is this just for investment?

Sometimes its sort of an investment... or just a sadness to see a model at a very low price.. BOAC Britannia's at £10.. I just had to have another... gawd knows why... :D have never sold anything..

Yep thats about it , some times ( at least in my tiny mind ) they have been too cheap. Up to recently never sold beyond friends / family but with CHC box set due plus enormous 2nd half expenditure have my 1st item on the bay !

Yes I have pre-ordered what looks like an Eastern Front scheme JU87 from FOV to see what the quality is like .

Even the IXO one seems to be more accurate than the Corgi one. Having recently acquired the Corgi BBD I thought I would swop out the IXO offering (to go alongside TT and NGNG), but now I'm not so sure...

Funny looking back over (very!) old threads!

Agents respose (to my question from about 3 years ago) is about where i am now! :D

Anyway not too impessed at myself (back then) for picking a dihedral-less swasi-less model with a dodgy undercart as my 'most realistic' :)

Doubt you lot will let me pick a new one  so i am busy doing a few tweaks on 'black 6' (assume that is the 109G i was talking about )
Pics to follow if it's nice enough outside when i get home.

Favourites would be "BN" Chinook (why this one is worth as little as it is defies all logic) or the 12 Sqn Buccanneer. As for warbirds, quite possibly my Admiral Prune Lanc. Really like the Stuka, but sadly have neither the snake or Immelmann ones. The Schoppler 262 deserves an honourable mention too :cool

In my case, I often correct mistakes by adding missing parts, repainting, weathering, etc. but setting these cases aside, I'm surprised by the kudos bestowed on many of these models when it comes to "realism". I liked Corgi's Stukas a lot, but they are missing their wing guns and pitot heads. I liked that first Corgi HE-111 even more, but the fuselage crosses should be in the same position on both sides, shouldn't they? And so it goes. These are, at best, imperfect, factory made attempts at replicas, not the work of skilled model builders and craftsmen.

That said, A number of models stand out in my mind as quite realistic in appearance. Corgi's Lancasters, Swordfish and Gladiators, fit that bill as do Dragon's P-51Ds, Gemini's P-51Bs and Spitfire MK IXs, and a number of Hobby Master entries---The Avenger, Hellcat, F-4, Spitfire MK XIV and Buffalo, being notable examples. Carousel 1's FW-190D also deserves mention, although it and other models in this line need some weathering, as do some of those, named above.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to dismiss anyone's enthusiasm for any particular model---even if it has flaws. I just hope we notice them and, if we are so inclined, that we try to enchane or correct them.

Agree that some of the best efforts are the Lanc, Swordfish and Heinkel 111, but I am quite partial to the Corgi Hurricanes - in particular the McKnight and Gleed models.

The Flying Mule has stock of the Immelmann. I have one on the way even as we speak. Coincidentally, I'm also reading 'The Hardest Day' by Alfred Price which tells the story of that bird.

My Corgi Lancs look pretty realistic to my untrained eye, especially Phantom of the Ruhr.

The Corgi Lysanders do not look to shabby. I have their Westland Lysander Mk.II No. 225 Squadron RAF and think it is pretty accurate.

Guy's,

From a Corgi perspective, the Gladiator is a fantastic tool and with an impending inter-war subject release, this could quite easily be a future classic!

My favourite model is the 'Kent Spitfire'. Two of Corgi's unsung Heroes in my 'umble opinion are the Wellington, and much as I hate to admit it... the Stuka!

Most convincing/realistic?

I agree with P51D - the Dragon "Black 6" Bf 109G is one of those crackers you guys are always talking about. Overall, in my humble opinion, the most convincing/realistic warbirds that I've seen myself are the Corgi Gladiator, Swordfish, Lancaster and He 111, the Dragon P-51D Mustang, the Gemini Aces P-51B/C Mustang, Spitfire IX and Bf 109F, and the Hobby Master F-4 and Texan/Harvard.

They all certainly look the part.

Hobby Master's Bf 110s are definitely getting there too.

Spitful

In my aircraft collection the Gemini Aces "Spirit of Kent" is to me the most realistic. With Hobby Master's RAF P-39 Aircobra in second place.

with an honourable mention going to the Kent Spit... in that others have shown just how hard it is to get this subject to look like a Spitfire...

I'm new to the collection of diecast models. For years I have accumulating a hoard of 1000 plus unmade plastic kits with the intent that one day I will make that perfect model! However, the likes of Dragon, HM and Gemini Aces (and ok I admit the occassional Corgi) have made me realise that the diecast manufacturers can produce a better model than I ever will. From my small but growing collection of diecast (the wife is starting to get alarmed at the expense of this new obsession) I would say that the Gemini Princess Elizabeth P51C is the most convincing. Possibly followed by Dragons excellent bubble canopied P47 in the colours of Eagleston. The Gemini Plagis Spit is another cracker although the rudder and incorrect canopy lose it points.

For me the most realistic 1:72 in miniature form in my collection would be:• Corgi Lysander Mk III
• Corgi Wellington (WS•B)
• Corgi Norway Gladiator
Absolute gems, the lot of them!
