It's 'June' FlyPast time ( even though I reckon we're still in April  ).If you're into Hurricanes and Canberras there are one or two nice articles ( especially about the 'new' BofB Hurricane ), but not much on the AA front this month. July's issue just plopped through the letterbox....Nice big colour piccie of a P-40 Kittyhawk front and centre while we're waiting for Corgi to deliver theirs ;)
For me, a 'quiet' issue this time although there are some nice colour photos of Canberras and a new contender in the 'Warbirds Corgi'll never do' listing - the Martin Maryland flown by 'Warby' out of Malta !
But then, right at the very end, there's a very nice article about a Banff Strike Wing Mossie incident, complete with rare photos..... :) :)

Wow- the diecast forum hits the bigtime in the latest FlyPast - the very first article is all about the MoM set with Clive Denney giving our Forum Heroes a big plug !
AAs also get a look in with a Meteor & P40 on the 'new products' page. It's a really good issue this time around with plenty of Lanc' stuff including a super article about WS-J-for-Johnnie-Walker ( come on Corgi - surely a candidate for the 1/72 L/E Tallboy Lanc...... )
Oh - and I've found another candidate for an aircraft so little known that even IXO will never do it - the Bristol Brigand B1 ! ;)

I saw the 'postie' walking down the road this morning (in the pouring rain) and considered waiting for him but I had a train to catch. Oh well, something to look forward to when I get home tonight. Flypast should do a big 'splash' on the MoM Corgi release as it is a fine example of the 'warbird' community doing something pretty special to commemorate an historic anniversary. The Forum ‘special’ has helped to substantially fund the project and everyone involved should get due recognition.
I would prefer Ixo to do a Lysander before a Brigand……..!

But, for the dedicated borderline nutter, forget Page 3 - just look at Page 17 ! They really know how to twist the knife - I want one -NOW !

Blimey it's that time of the month again and here's the November F/P....
First off, if you're into P-51 Mustangs this issue will be a 'must purchase' - plenty of great info about current UK Mustangs ( Janie, BBD and Princess Elizabeth ) and a superb article about the 352nd FG with some very rare photos - I've certainly never seen the one of Bodney Tower demolished by an errant Mustang on D-Day.
Otherwise, a little bit about MoM with pics of the Blue Spit ( no mention of the Forum as usual ) , a TT ad from CHC, that Corgi 262 ad again to torture me even more ( ) and a really creepy photo of a B-29 poking out of a lake in Alaska.....

This Newbie from Florida has been reading FlyPast for about a year now, since I got started with collecting. I usually receive it at Barnes & Noble Booksellers on the 12th or 13th of the month. I just bought the December 2005 Spitfire edition. I already subscribe to Flight Journal, but also need--really need--FlyPast.
I subscribed and was told it would take 6-8 weeks to start.
So I am looking forward to the January issue which you already have. I'll have to wait for it until January 10th or so.
Now: Tell me about Aeroplane. I like the Database section, but it is VERY expensive here. Any comments would be appreciated.
Martin Bull
14th December 2005, 18:39
Aeroplane is a very highly-regarded publication and competes directly with FlyPast ; production values are almost identical. However, one slight difference is that FlyPast focusses more on WWII warbirds, whereas Aeroplane attempts a broader approach encompassing civil aircraft, WW1, etc. Aeroplane also tends to have a central 'datafile' group of articles about a particular aircraft type each month.
It's a personal thing ; I'm addicted to FlyPast and have a subscription ; I tend to flick-through Aeroplane at the newsagents, buying it if it seems interesting ( which I did this month, with the me262 on the cover ).

Thanks for the reply--and the neat analysis. I have looked at Combat Aircraft and Air International. There is often so much information--information overload--that I was boggled. I figure that FlyPast has never disappointed me. I do not need to know how many jets crashed in Pakistan last week. I am not a fast-jet enthusiast, yet I do like to look at the F-16, the Eurofighter, the Typhoon. However, I will stay with the P-40, P-51, Spitfire, Hurricane, and Mosquito as my "true loves."
Martin Bull
15th December 2005, 09:55
Another small point to watch out for is that Aeroplane has a deal in place with the USA's Flight Journal whereby they share photo resources ( eg the 'new' 262s ). No problem with that if you only get one of the magazines, but if you get both, some photos can seem remarkably familiar.

Well done FlyPast for landing on the doormat just in time for the festive season. Thanks for the comments about AEROPLANE. I will purchase that on a "as needed" basis.
PS: I have to relate another moving experience--again, the truth. In 2003, while in Cambridge for the month, I was walking in the American Cemetery. A two-engined fighter-bomber came over the hill (from Duxford?). Of course I waved. It was low enough to see the crew. IT WAVED/WAGGLED/WIGGLED (?) its wings. At me?

Yesterday, 3 January 2006, my February issue of FlyPast was in the mailbox. How cool is that? Now I am current with the readings.
In addition, I received a used hardbound copy of Piece of Cake from an Amazon bookseller. Ready for this? $2.15. Oh, what a lucky day it was!
This morning I read 72 pages: I learned the following: spot on, silly-buggers, spew, ********, ****** silly (I already knew "****!), and dust-up. I am sure I will learn a few new words in the next 75 pages, or so.
I do learn so much from reading. Cheers!

Damn good issue, but to be honest that's not unusual with Flypast! I very rarely feel disapponted by it. The article on Wright's field was fascinating, and the CD was worth the price of the magazine alone, I very much enjoyed that and with such gems as a Vulcan QRA takeoff and a Valiant it make for great listening. More please!

I received my copy of "FlyPast" this week and regard it as excellent as usual.
The CD was fascinating. Somehow, the recording of the Meteor failed to capture that "Derwent whine" as it approached, but it certaining triggered the imagination.
I saw several of the V-bomber scrambles at Finningley and Farnbro'. Always very impressive with the ground vibrating beneath one's feet. A "Chiefie" was responsible for the design of the external ground starter that allowed the four engines to be started in very rapid succession as the crew were boarding.

I met Tony at Flying Legends last year. Thoroughly nice bloke and had a real interesting chat. That's why Pops' car sports the Canadian Harvard Association sticker. Tony actually pointed out to me what was going to transpire with the Dragon Rapide prior to it catching fire on start up. He is from the North West of the UK originally and returns back each year, with his son to visit the folks and take in the best warbirds show in Europe....

Whitley has more schemes than the Tiffie including an all black, Coastal Command, grey/green and BOAC schemes. (Don't think there was a desert scheme but then I didn't think there was a Tiffie scheme.:D )
Hampden is more limited but it did serve with Coastal Command. Two squadrons were sent to Russia and the aircraft were handed over to the Russians when the crews returned to the UK. Scraping the barrel here but there was also a proposed float plane version for the Swedish air force.

Add a thorough appreciation of the late Alex Henshaw, and a snippet of news that B-17G 'Liberty Belle' just - may just - come over for Flying Legends, and you've got this months' required reading ! ;)

Also note that the pre-pro Spit looked a heck of a lot better 'for real' at the BoB Day than the photo in the ad.

The new 'Flypast' has some interesting articles this month including one on the IWM Lambeth Spitfire (a real 'BoB' veteran), the Shuttleworth Gladiator and a tribute to Robin Olds. Of course, but the ad for the "Survivors" section of the new catalogue in the "Airshows" supplement to me looked a good, targetted attempt. The awareness of the range I would have thought is pretty good, but hopefully the more specific ad for airshow attenders will swing a few extra sales by informing the punters exactly what is out there.... ;)

1st April 2008, 13:41
Have to disagree re the design- a triumph of style over substance. Goodness knows how the 'more senior' reader will cope with the font change and the content of articles seems to have taken a tumble to make way for photos.EG p68 and the Eagle Hurricane where the text looks more like a footnote. P25 a full page describing 12 roundels? Men behind the medals where a full page is taken up with what appear to be generic shots of medals ie- possibly not even the bloke's original group. 'Briefings' just about require a magnifying glass (and belive me my eyes are OK)
Phantom stuff is good but try finding a B24 in the Warbirds directory.
Sorry, I think it's far from the best ever, maybe I'm in a minority, but it reminds me of the books I used to get from the library as a kid, not the informative content I've come to expect from Fly Past.
After 20 years I may even move on to the Daily Telegraph Aircraft suppliment-sorry The Aeroplane.

A bit of an improvement this time around IMHO ( July 2008 issue ). It's a Spitfire Special and they have achieved the near-impossible by including some Spitfire material with a 'difference' - a new MkVb restoration in the States, 'Turkish' Spits, Spitfire archaeology and a sad but mouth-watering series of photos of the Cosford Spitfire dump circa 1956. There's quite a wide range of subjects this month - overall, not a bad 'read' for the money.

Including a 36 page tribute to 'Friday the 13th' with extensive coverage of her wartime history, recreation and interior photos, this really is not an issue to miss! Glad to hear that this last one is a better one, have to admit I've also thought nearly half of this year's copies have not been worth bothering with, and it's the first time since I've been getting Flypast (about 8 years) that I've felt like that. Absolutely - it's perfect summertime-garden-reading ; a wide variety of articles ( including the pilots story and photos of the notorious 'flying Victor' incident at Brunty  ) topped by the 'BoB' movie articles. Mostly familiar stuff to diehard nutters, but very browsable nonetheless......:)

Wot's wiv 'Aircraft' (Aircraft' Illustrated?). It's one of those magazines that I almost buy. Wasn't aware it was being revamped?
Indeed as part of its' 40th (IIRC) anniversary they seem to have decided to go head to head with Flypast with effect from the next issue of AI (as was).
Will be interesting to see if it works - not least because I found the two mags to be a good complimentary pairing each month :( . If AI goes down the 'historics only' route totally then I guess I may well not renew my subscription next time it lapses, as I used to like AI keeping me abreast of current aviation topics/news/airlines/air arms etc.
Wonder why they feel they too need to follow Flypast and Aeroplane  - is there a lack of current aviation news/articles worth publishing, or is it simply that by default there's an ever growing wealth of 'historic' topics, whilst modern cost cutting means there is less current news/development in aviation?
Or maybe its readership demographics - perhaps fewer youngsters read specialist mags (presumably they use use t'internet to keep up to date these days;) ), and so its only sad old f@rts that buy printed magazines:D . And I suspect the majority of older readers prefer "classic" aviation news/stories to stories about the latest minor tweak on one of those noisy paraffin burners, or about the ever shrinking world of military aviation, or of current airlines where they all fly much the same hardware to much the same places?
AiIs article on Bhuttan Air (or whomever it was) made a refreshing change last issue..... and I'm not usually too fussed about modern civvies...

And Ian Allan also has its own 'fast jet' mag so I can just about see the logic but they are up against formidable opposition in Flypast and Aeroplane.
But, just seen the latest Aeroplane and Flypast is a clear winner this month. Aeroplane is not a bad issue(and thanks to them for the YAM signing event plug), just that Flypast's issue is VERY good!
Oh and I am in no way biased by Key Publishing's generous support in publicising the 'Target Falklands' event in their Waddington chalets!:D

'Bumper issue' is an over-used term but this one comes in at 132 pages , including ( ) a special 'Luftwaffe' section featuring a Chris Goss article and close-up essays of restored He111, Ju52 and Ju88 in Norway. There's also a double-page spread on the East Kirkby airshow, a great pic of Vulcan XH558 over the Lake District, an article about Sally B's years as a flying test-bed, the story of a Lancaster crash in Rutland, some WW1 biplane stuff, some inter-war biplane stuff, DH Vampires over Malaya......

I find that one has peaks and troughs, frankly if the "Datafile" doesn't interest you then it's uphill from there on in. If the Datafile interests you however, it'll probably be a cracker. Horses for courses, and the reason I tend to "cherry pick" with Aeroplane. Currently for me though all the aviation mags have been misfiring, and the only mag that is delivering top-drawer fascinating stuff every month is "Britain at War". Well worth it's money every month-without fail :cool
simonsfotos
27th August 2009, 18:42
Sorry mate, you've got the wrong mag there. Datafile is actually Database and it's in AEROPLANE not AIRCRAFT. 'Aircraft' is the new name for the re-launched and classic only Aircraft Illustrated. 'Datafile' is the middle section of your favourite magazine 'Britain At War'.
To my mind, Aeroplane cannot be beaten for history. Not only the Database but also the other articles as well. I think that is down to their immense archive as the magazine and its forbears have been running pretty much from the start of flying.
The Ian Allan production of 'Aircraft' particularly in the way of photography is totally top drawer. Unlike a lot of people I actually like the re-launched style, not being one for reading pages and pages on aircraft production or obscure worl air forces. I do however miss the news pages which are now totally devoted to Preservation news.
Flypast is a bit of a conundrum. Some months it's riveting but others I can get through it in a matter of minutes. When it's good, it's very good. But when it's on a downer like last month (for me that is) I wonder why I bought it!
Totally agree with you about 'Britain at War'. Read from cover to cover every single month.

Oops, made a bit of a mess of that! :o My comments as you surmise were meant with reference to Aeroplane. As for Aircraft Illustrated becoming Aircraft and dedicated to historics only, that's a bit of a baffler. They had their own little niche, and have now launched an all-out assault on "Flypast" territory. Seems a rather strange one, but I'd buy it if there was something that interested me. Thought AI was useful as a "stopgap" and not quite as full on as the industry focussed AFM, but suppose they must know what they're doing! Glad I'm not the only Britain at War devotee anyway, and thanks for clearing that jumble! :)

Iunderstand the iconic status of Aeroplane, and I really have tried to like it- but I just find it incredibly, frankly, dull. I think it's each to their own and I can't put my finger why I can't get into it. (My choice of poolside reading is pretty heavy so it isn't the challenge of reading it)
If it were a newspaper I'd say it was the Telegraph- a fine paper with a real pedigree and views you may, or may not, accept; but I just prefer the Times. So it is with the two big Historic aviation magazines- I have genuinely tried to get on with Aeroplane on more than one occasion but just prefer FlyPast.

February`s edition seems a little light compared to the last two months but there are a couple of good articles IMPO. One is about the JP and this will make the mouth water for those expecting the Skymax release soon.;)
The second concerns the Bristol Brigand and after reading about this little known aircraft, I can`t help but feel we would be missing something if this was never released as diecast.:(
And look out for the `in your face` advert for the Corgi TSR.2.....

Got this month's Flypast and to be honest thought it rubbish. Glad there was that U-2 article in the back as it was about the only article for me. Will probably read the Brigand bit as well, but far too much on preservation and restoration. I know it's a heritage aviation mag, but the preservation element is really taking over, and impressive as they are reading about the 50th Mustang rebuild/relocation just does not interest me :(

Possibly not! As ever, you can't please all the people all the time, but for me the best thing about Flypast were the articles from the men "who were there", or the men who spoke to them men "who were there", regardless of the conflict. There seems to be less and less of that though. Some of the restoration stuff I have enjoyed, especially when it has included a bit of detail on the history, such as the recent article on the Ju88 restoration in the Luftwaffe special. Stuff like P-51s, Spitfires, P-47s etc I just find a bit too hackneyed though. The new AI is OK, but too WW" biased for me. Flypast has always given a fair shout to what came after, and when it's good, it's excellent. Incidentally, came away from the newsagent today with Flypast and Aeroplane, but put AI back... ;)

I bought Flypast from issue one for the next 15 odd years. Then I realised that I was buying out of habit, putting in the magazine rack, and throwing it it away 4 weeks later when the next edition came in. I left it a few years, then went back every few months, maybe buying a copy to read while eating lunch. My wife bought me an annual subscription last year, and I got back into it again and renewed myself. Air Forces monthly I dropped, F-16's, F-16's, and maybe F-16's.......

Aeroplane has been sold by IPC to Kelsey Publishing and long time editor Michael Oakey has now become Consultant Editor, vacating the Editor's chair. I think that's what I'll be looking at but it's running out of time. Far too many articles on Spitfire and P-51 restorations and the old historical articles getting fewer and fewer. Couple this with an increase in articles on classic General Aviation (which I'm sorry does not interest me at all) and the issues are getting leaner. Yes there are fewer of the men from WW2 to tell their story, so why not a few more recent ones? The pilots accounts etc from the Gulf, Falklands, Vietnam etc are always a fascinating read, yet seem rather few and far between :(

Totally agree with you there. Of the mags I get each month, Britain At War is the only one I consistently read cover to cover every single month. It's always fascinating and gives a very readable look at so many aspects of Britain At War. Can't believe it's now nearly 4 years since the first issue! The only problem I'm now finding with is that since it went up to a regular 116 pages a month, the cover has a tendency to become a bit loose on the staples.

Also an interesting colour profile of a Red Flag '77 Vulcan with sand/stone undersides. If Corgi were mad / brave enough to do this it would either bomb or sell like hot cakes. I can understand a Buccaneer screaming across the Nevada/Arizona(?) desert at 50' but a Vulcan:unsure:

Best Flypast in ages for me. The Germany Lightning articles were superb and a good Bomber Command one too. Definately where I like to see Flypast. The Vulcansection was a little disappointing though, articles really were rather basic and added nothing to what I already knew about the type. More crew/pilot recollection stories, especially on a modern ish type would be nice.

Hijacking this thread a bit but I bought the latest issue of 'Aircraft' a few days ago. Really nice article on the repro Me262 and a couple of excellent aerial shots in plan view. Don't get this mag often as can't afford 3no aviation mags a month:o but it isn't that bad a buy.

Theres a couple of pages about Spitfire P9374 in this months, but more interesting is a 7 page article about X4650,the Spitfire Al Deeres Spit collided with which was recovered from a river in 1976.It seems to have more original parts in it than P9374 and is near to first flight.Good article on Daks as well.

My subscription has one issue left to go, I think I will let it lapse. The past few issues have been glass full/empty.... the Spitfire restoration items, really interesting, RAF Germany Lightnings, even more so. "special features" on the Vulcan and Dakota..... very light and general.

It does seem a bit obsessed with Spitfires, Mustangs, 8th AF and Bomber Command. And the graphic style is a bit naff. Stick to Aeroplane;)

As Tesco now stock both, you take SWMBO into the store, fix her up with some transport and by the time you is on the back cover, you is there to troll down the last coupla aisles that supply the go go juice...
....simples.....

This months Flypast seems ok. Vampire spotlight is the usual standard and like Marmite, you will like it or hate it. Reasonable articles on Pearl Harbor anniversary and Spitfire pilot John Van Schaick, plus a story of an emergancy in an EE Lightning.
Overall not bad and better than last months edition IMPO.

Yeah, Bomber Command.......again.
Not criticizing the content or the justification for recounting BC achievements. But Flypast seems to home in on a relatively regular set of subjects - BC, VIII air force, Sptifires.
I'm probably wrong and someone can throw lots of stats at me but that's my impression;) :D

Good points Col; I do enjoy BC issues but Fighter Command should be better represented. Some of the American Warbird stuff leaves me cold also.

I agree with you totally Col, though P-51 restorations seems to be an ever common one. Having said that I may be in the minority who likes the post war articles too. The recent Lightning pilot stories were superb, and for me these pilot recollections are Flypast's best articles, no matter what the era. To be honest though even some of the more modern stuff of late has been poor, was really looknig forward to the Vulcan issue but was left disappointed. Still, rough with the smooth, last month's was pretty good, will see for this one :)

I really enjoyed this months Flypast. Possibly the best in a long time with plenty of scope in all areas.;)
