This is following exactly the same pattern as the Aviation Art market.. a total overestimation of the actual numbers out there, these numbers being generated by the initial demand for a product that fills a hole in the market...

Pre 1975 there was sod all art about, then Barrie Clark painted that Spitfire...

Now apart from a few prints and they have to be mint.... a lot of the stuff is pretty much worthless

have been put off buying prints not ony because of the price, but they fade (only have 1 )we have talked about this before, but whats the point, rather buy a decent book with them in, like taylors volumes 1-4 which i have, cant see the point in leaving them in the tube

Exactly what I am now doing - I bought a couple to start off with, but have now run out of Wall Space, and at £100 a pop that's about half-a-dozen dragon models, so now just lookout for the bound Volumes.

I think the same advice applies for aviation prints as for any 'art' - only buy what you really like because you may be stuck with it when the market dips....

I have a very small number of prints ( including Coulson's 'Jail Breakers' signed by eighteen Amiens Raid vets ) which I rotate and never put in direct sunlight.

Sadly, it's the signatures that make this 'market' and soon there will be no-one to sign..... :(

have a fair few envelopes signed by BoB men, not first day covers, but nice little collection of sigs and not too expensive this way

Yes - those little envelopes can be addictive ( here we go again ! ;) ) but they're nice to keep and display, and values do increase.....

Lucky enough to know Mr Coulson. What a perfectionist. Some of the art is fantastic to look at - I'd say if you are going to spend a fortune on a print spend a little more and have it 'conservation framed'. This includes the use of non acid backing papers, special glass (I think) and proper sealing. Of course keep it out of direct sunlight. I agree 100% is is totally stupid to buy this stuff to leave it in the tube unless you are being truly speculative. I don't have any prints BUT have been very tempted and Coulson's Mosquito Jailbreakers is close to the top of my target for tonight list!

cough! how much do the likes of coulson and taylor charge for an original, and hands up who could afford one

Coulsons are/were normally about £10-15K.., well the ones at the GAvA are.. but that of course includes a fairly hefty fee to the Guild so it may or may not be cheaper.. Size would most probably be another factor and subject.. he should be able to knock off a Spitfire fairly quickly but suppose if you wanted something really bespoke that would be extra as there would be lots of reference work involved..

As to Taylor £1000 ish seems to get you a drawing.. they appear on the Bay sometimes.. but as to a full blown jobbie gawd knows.... price may depend whether its been a print or not.. :D

As a print publisher (albeit wildlife art)agree totally with Warbirdguru's comments re framing/type of glazing/sealing/sunlight etc. Bought a couple of Taylor prints a few years back (signed by Adolf Galland and Gunther Rall) and they seem to have appreciated in value nicely.(Better I suspect than the mountain of B24s and other AA in the loft will)
Re buying original paintings an alternatiuve is to check out Giclee prints which offer a level of reproduction much superior to lithographic copies.
If you want some good value prints check out the RAF Benevolent Fund websiteshop-nice print of a VC10 on there very reasonable.
