Just read that book on holiday. I never thought that anything could increase my admiration for 'The Few' but this book did, for the likes of us it's a must have.
Here's a snippet...

The General Goering Prize Fours, Bad Ems, July 1938.

"Shortly before the race we walked down to the changing rooms to get ready. All five German crews were lying flat on their backs on mattresses, great brown stupid looking giants, taking deep breaths. It was all very impressive. I was getting out of my shirt when one of them came up and spoke to me, or rather harangued me, for I had no chance to say anything. He had been watching us, he said, and could only come to the conclusion that we were thoroughly representative of a decadent race. No German crew would dream of appearing so lackadaisical if rowing in England; they would train and they would win. Losing this race might not appear very important to us, but I could rest assured that the German people would not fail to notice and learn from our defeat."

****** good book.. read most of the B of B stuff, that one made yer think just how tired they were and that the chances fof survival Day One to the end of the Battle were virually nil... even fewer surviving to the end of the war...

There nothing in it we do not already know.. sorry no startling revelations.. but it does give you more of an idea as to just how ****** close we came to a thashing and that they gave up before we did.. as we know (with hindsight) they came very close, they also made one or two errors.. and so did we, just that they made more than we did.. You also get the picture that this was a battle where there was no senior involvement on the pitch as it were.. anyone over about 30 who participated was instant cannon fodder.. but it was also a battle where the survivors returned home to their loved ones each night and in the main got absolutely legless every night.. that no one just called in sick the next day... that pilots burnt very well in their cockpits and that with parachutes (this time round) they survived... book that reinforces the respect and gratitude we do owe this band of warriors.

Linctus time...
