From a long term point of view which is the better investment, a Hartment 1/32 109 or a limited edition 500 run Sabre/Meteor, all three of which are currently available at about the same price? Will the 500's be dumped?

I would not choose either. :)

Nah don't think so, 500 is a good figure, and as a result I probably get one, simply because now I've allocated one of my shelves with RAF coloured jets only in the Grey and Green Camo.
I used to collect a few WWII fighters (of my faves) or what I think maybe a sound judgement in investment but I can't afford that anymore, because it's a mixture of other hobbies/boredom in corgi and just not a lot of spare cash to go round.
Just to expand on the "Boredom of Corgi". They have given me (not literally I wish:rolleyes: )a nice full range of WWII fighters and as I can't afford every release, it's seems my collection is slowing down quite dramatically and this is mainly due to too many Jet fighters that just seem too unnecessary to collect. I've done well on the WWII front but even that is now under scrutiny especially at 30 quid a pop.
The Jets seem unecessary because a) if you haven't got enough cash it doesn't seem to be worth it and b) The Schemes seem to be boring the life out of me - really how many plain grey and silver jets do you want. Jeeze no wonder they hit the bins so quickly
So 1 of each Jet and a full range of WWII stuff seems to be my philosophy now and I seem to be happier for it saving some of my cash to go elsewhere.
Sorry Corgi, this is what you get for your strange strategies and price rises. It ain't going to work. You should of kept a line of aircraft going and not neglecting plus the schemes should have been tastier. :( My cash is going elsewhere!

I would guess even 5 years from now you will find some of the more sought after 1/72 bombers and 1/32 planes will still be trading at well below RRP.
OK if you bought at £30-40, not so good if you paid full or near full wack.
Its too hard to spot the winners now, though at less than a tenner (NGNG, McKnight) its worth a gamble if you've got the spare cash.

Personally gave up playing that game about six months ago - compared to the planes being produced three or four years ago, it's hard to think of any of the recent releases that would be worth anything.
The boxes are much thinner, the certificates mean nothing and the recent crop of quality control blunders should not be happening when such a premier price is being asked.

Get a grip men ...you are all talking bollix... the 500's have been dumped already... £25 for either... what you do with them now is up to you... the dealers aint hanging onto anything at present...

And at £25 is the Sabre a buy now or wait a bit longer?

At only a 500 run I cannot see this one flying out of the doors......
It's got a dull blue box, with an ordinary cert in it - nothing special......

Seriously? A blue box like the No.1 Squadron Set type? and a ordinary certificate? Have Corgi learnt nothing? Oh heck......

Well D/C, if at £25.00 you are happy to buy it, then buy it, but if you are prepared to take a chance and wait..... Do so. Best advice anyone can offer I think. :)

speaking of 1/32 types, bit difficult to tell how they are going to do in the future bit early isnt it ?. I dont think i have seen any go for more that the full rrp. Will Hartman be £200 quid in a years time ?....more like 10 i suppose

Presumably in 12 months all of the Hartmann's will have been hoovered up and may even have a scarcity value. We of course do not know how much more mileage Corgi are going to exact from the 1/32 ME109 mould. There is the issue of the Finnish model pending and I cannot believe that they will not do an Abbeville Boys Galland model (I would if I were them).
IMHO this is one of the hound's best offerings (even if ignoring past undercarriage comments) and I suppose I need to clear further space in the loft!

One of them will no doubt become 'valuable' given time, not always a guaranteed cert that its likely to be Hartman or Barkhorn.. yer need a good warehouse fire..:D

Dear Agent
Notice from yr Huntingdon thread that you have taken the plunge in case !/32 ME109s do go up. As you say it's a nice model and at that money.........
Going off thread for a mo Bob Oddie seems to be the only dealer (that I see) who actually displays stuff out of the boxes!

Impulse buy Mr Strix..... if yer speak to Ray long enough you end up buying something and for the money its a snip.. didnt realise there were so many working bits on the wing... better than silly gun covers..
Bob does put a few on display which is good (and brave), whether that sold any Hurricanes this weekend would be debateable though as it seems that the pooch is utilising some 'strange' colours.. but certainly good to see the model close to...

Fully agree with TMkV here. Gave up investing long ago and only buy what I want in my collection, and no doubles at that. If something I have one of ends up at $500 in 5 years, , then I'll have to decide at that point how much it means to the collection vs sold to buy other things.

I think the answer is that neither of them will be a good investment. The 1/32 scale models, nice as they are don't have any real value. Take Baders Spit for example. You can still get the 1/32 model for around 40 squid, less than 1/2 the original RRP. The 1/72 version on the other hand is around 3 times the RRP.
A 500 run of any model a few years ago would have been like gold dust. 500 of an average type model such as the Meteor or Sabre is never going to attract the money that the Aces series has, and they were produced in thousands. These two are already available at BIN prices and I think they could go lower still. Yes, the Aces series hit the BINs but the Sabre and Meteor won't recover in the same way. They don't have the charisma of the Spit, Mustang or ME109 and are not instantly associated with famous people.
Time will tell.

I think the 1/32s time will come, but at £30-40 a go its too much money to take the gamble. If I had to buy 3 for investment purposes they'd be Monkton Mossie, Hartmann and Lane Spit.
DCRanger

So have you got those three and will you be going for a 500 run Sabre at £25?

Haven't got the Moncton DC, but would be very tempted if I saw one at a toy fair under £40.Somehow think I've missed the boat on that one.As for the Sabre, unless its a Me262 or Meteor Mk1/3, jets don't interest me.
At least it keeps the collection to a managable size
DCRanger
28th February 2006, 22:06
Wish I could keep my collection to a reasonable size but I keep getting suckered in. I wasn't really interested in jets either but now seem to have quite few.
I'm now trying to operate a "one in, one out" policy. IE' if I buy one I sell one. Does the No1 Squadron set count as one or four? Hmmmm..... I think it can only be one:rolleyes:

Must be a difficult choice DC, do you sell off duplicates or are they models you are fed up of looking at or never going to display?
