Following Neil's report about the Dak, why don't we post sightings on the one thread. We could then get an idea of where (particularly historic planes) are flying over. Be interesting to see how far and wide the sightings are. :)

All we ever get is the police chopper (at all times)

Oh, and the civic approaching & leaving Leeds/Bradford airport, which is 10 minutes away.....if you're into it there is a well-known (locally) public area which overlooks the runway & always has a few spotters there, particularly at weekends.

Not my area of interest though.....

The normal Stansted Luton traffic... indispersed with Duxford Days when we seem to be on the big circle.... :D :D Avenger plods around a lot.. sounds like a tractor when on idle stooging throttle.... Get a lot of powered hang gliders that take off from a local farm.. which can get quite irritating.. (get out the side by side...) Likes of the odd Cessna.. Very occassionally get the police and air amulance helicopters.. the odd Chinook twacks across the sky.. Still quite a lot of DH Stuff.. Tiger moths and the like....

so not much then... :D :D :D

Don't do too bad here - often see things like the Lanc, Spit, Hurri, Dak from the BBMF. Civil stuff(yawn) from Humberside.

Quite a bit of military particulary the AWACS out of Waddington and Tornados, Harriers and from time to time F15's.

Also the Red Arrows en route to various shows.

Miss the A10's though. They used to follow the Trent in pairs - a fine site :)

Saturday I drove the 20 miles to Osceola, Wisconsin, for the half-price book sale at the big "Wheels & Wings" event. ( up to 75% off certain books on their Web site: http://www.motorbooks.com ). Not a promotion, just a service to forum members.... :)

Saw a formation of AT-6s overfly the Osceola airport at 600 feet in right echelon. Rather a loose formation: must be older & less bolder aviators.

Driving home I saw a B-25 rip up the St. Croix River at less than 200 feet. Must have been doing 300 knots, probably buzzing someone's house. Better watch out for the Feds!

See quite a lot of Chinooks fly over here. Also harriers too!
Last Summer an unusual jet went over which I think was either a meteor or Canberra (judging from the shape of the wing mounted engines. Are examples of both still flying?

Don't see much here as I live inside the London CTR all I get is loadsa 747's, A340's, 777's etc which is still great though.
Worked the BBMF on the Dux weekend and some early jets such as Vampire G-VAMP. We also had a couple of interesting a/c in this week, eg Romanian AF An24 and a 737-200 owned by the Miami Dolphins with the smartest looking engines.

You get the kids interested Minter, then you go off to fairs/airshows (taking the kids) being ever so considerate to the wife, giving her a day all to herself :) You also get sent to fairs running up to Christmas so you can buy lovely value for money pressies for your mini collectors ;)

I'm on the flightpath for Lynham so it's C-130's all day every day (which is good for me as i love em),Vc-10's & Tristars out of Brize Norton doing circuit's plus the RAF C-17's have been in and out fairly regularly lately.

2 of the 'Utterly Butterly' Stearmans flew over the other day quite low (minus the wingwalker birds),must have been transiting back from a display.

If it were a week last Sunday [Duxford Day] it could have been from there. Four Lycras took off ... but after the display only one came back. Even I noticed it. We very carefully counted them out and back... well, CFBC certainly did ... at least, that's what he said he was doing

On the thread generally, we often get lucky with display aircraft going over. Last Sunday the Tiger and Bear Cat accompanied by "No Guts" ambled over heading back home to Duxford, I guess from a display over the channel somewhere. We get quite a bit of that in the season. A recent treat was a Ju52 that crawled low right overhead on it's way to North Weald. I have to admit though that, living in the depths of Kent, the sight of a Spitfire or Hurricane overhead is very evocative.

It causes much sad shaking of head from other half. A recent description went.... "There's a faint hum in the sky and he goes into Meer Cat mode ... head shoots up ...and he's out of the door heading for the high ground!" Harsh, ... but essentially fair I suppose ... I do reckon I can tell the sound of a Merlin or Cyclone from miles away!

The big civils are pretty high up by the time they get to our neck of the woods. We do get the occasional low level Tonka beat up... but they're miles away by the time I've got out of the door. We used to get A-10's very low too, but they seemed almost like they were just looking around by comparison. A bit sinister those. They reminded me of a description I read of gaggles of Russian aircraft flying over Berlin right after the shooting stopped... "like vultures picking over a carcass".
I certainly wouldn't have liked to have been on the receiving end of their Vulcans!

Hey raff,
Whereabouts are ya? I used to live in Kent in Bromley. Had friends in Orpington/Chelsfield Chislehurst area and we often used to see WW11 stuff going over there. Never saw any jets though.
I do remember seeing A10's swooping over very low in late 80's in Midlands while out walking! Amazing things. Do they still fly in UK? Havn't seen one in years!

Hi Red,

I live way out in the sticks near Canterbury, real B of B territory. Within the parish boundary two Spitfires a Hurricane [the pilot's body was recovered only last year] a Defiant and a 109 "went in" during that period alone.

I seem to remember reading that all the A-10's have been withdrawn from the UK now .. this was about three years ago.

Same here these days, the police chopper and loads of airliners. Long gone are the days of F-111's, Tornados, and 81st TFW A-10's, it's mainly AAC helos nowadays and the odd Chinook.

We do however get Maurice Hammond's Harvard and Mustang flying over to and from Hardwick, and we see a few Stearmans too!

On a sad note Suffolk Police are "reviewing" the situation regarding their helicopter operations due to a shortfall in budget. Despite this asset proving to be a valuable tool in fighting crime, they may have to get rid of it because they can't afford to run it!

I was in Cromer in Norfolk last week. A lot of military jet activity, mainly F15's and Harriers - but it was the Canberra that left me wondering exactly where all my tax money is going.

You men of Newark
Who fell burning from the sky
That others might seek asylum
And then go home on holiday.

I don't suppose WH Auden would have liked that one either.

Gazelles', Lynx, Chinooks', Pumas', a Herc. every so often, a Hunter a couple of weeks ago, and then for D-Day anniversary, a Vampire and a P-47, along with a spitfire, flew about 20ft above me when I was standing on a hill behind my house............ which was nice. Also live below the main flight path so most of the transatlantic flights come overhead. Airport close by and it's getting busier by the day so alot of smaller commercials. Big noise when they go out full.........the planes make alot of noise too.

I was flying into Regions Hospital in St. Paul today when conflicting traffic was pointed out to me by St. Paul Tower (KSTP): a North American B-25 in glossy Olive Drab over Neutral Gray. Looked like a 'J' model from 1/4 mile away.

After shutting down on the hospital helipad - which is about 1/4 mile from the airport - we were treated to the sight and the sound of the B-25 making multiple touch and go landings, its departure path being adjacent to our vantage point. Twin Wright Cyclone R-2600 engines. What a racket!

Well, I see and hear a near constant stream of AAC Gazelles and Lynxes mixed in with the odd Puma and more rarely now, a Chinook over the city. Also get to see the AAC Islanders, the super secret version loaded with more surveillance equipemtn than a JSTARS. Were as you have to put up with "A" police helicopter I have to listen to 2 or 3 Gazelles doing the same job at a time. Also the police here don't have a helicopter, no, we have our own reconaissance plane, a Britten Norman Islander delivered in 1992 with thermal imaging equipment and probably other stuff.

if you'd been there a bit earlier you'd have seen the Typhoon practicing its 'display'... :D lots of flying today as the chaps are trying to get their hours in before 'end of term' this friday.. 2 Typhoons were flying today as well so could've been them?? the 'old tat' ( :D ) is safely tucked-up in the BBMF hangar for the winter, the Dak should've flown today but it broke again so they've given up and started on its winter maintenance... and the Chipmunks were flying today too, again keeping up currency before the hols..

If you're talking officially, it's Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood airport for some reason, but if you ask any of the locals it's Finningley! don't know why they had to mess with the name in the first place, the new one is plain daft.

I was at Duluth International Airport yesterday (KDLH = Duluth, Minnesota) and watched six F-16s from the Minnesota Air National Guard fly overhead, enter the break, and circle for landing. They touched down at 30-second intervals except for last one. Arriving a bit too closely on the heels of the one before, he used aerodynamic braking after touchdown. He kept the nose high to create more drag and slow down more rapidly. The pilot left it a bit too late, I fear. He ran out of stabilator authority and the nose wheel came banging down. Bashing the runway, the nose bobbed up and down several times which made the aircraft look much like a wind-up toy crossing an uneven floor. Even behind his oxygen mask and helmet visor the pilot looked a bit rattled.

We all waved and hooted in appreciation. :D

Looked to be camo. The picture I put on the last thread, looks identical to the plane in question. I found the picture on "Air Forces" magazine website, but it does say what the plane is! Spotted overhead today a flyby over the City. The first three I missed as I was diving for my camera to stick out the office window, but they were two Eurofighters and an AWAC... The next two trio's follow on a couple of suspect pictures as I hung outside the windown to take them avoiding the phone lines and power lines, etc as I clicked......

Anybody know why? DDay perhaps?

Wow! That's the kind of chance encounter I like! No idea why they were there, but I'm impressed that you take your camera to work on the off-chance of encountering something!

Would have had the first three if my card had been on my camera, but I am not sure why they flew over... I think Neild will know.... (hope so)....

We get the AWACS over all the time and thought it was that, then I looked out and thought, ermmm....... More so.....

Just curious that is all..... Nice to see though, but I know the first two of the three were Eurofighters.... :)

There is something happening as they buzzing the skies, but above the clouds.... (Low cloud base).... :(

June 11th

WINDSOR LEAD = C-17A Globemaster III, 99 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton.

followed by :

TriStar, 216 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, with two Typhoon T.1's from RAF Coningsby.

E-3D Sentry AEW.1, 8/23 Squadron, RAF Waddington, with two Tornado F.3's from ?

VC.10, 10 or 101 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, with two Jaguar GR.3's from RAF Coltishall

Nimrod MR.2, Kinloss Surveillance Wing (KSW), RAF Kinloss, with two Tornado GR.4's from (Lossie)

Apparently "They fly over London at 1500ft so it's difficult to get shots of anything but the underneath view. If you position yourselves near the museums of South Kensington or in Hyde Park you can get a more side-on view as they bank towards the North after they cross Buck Palace, though you are going to be looking into the sun. Also, the weather/cloud base only has to be slightly dodgy and it gets either moved back to (I think) 4pm or scrubbed entirely."

Living eight miles from Wattisham we're getting quite a few over here now, and they are LOUD!! Had two in formation down fairly low, and the noise was like a USAF MH-53J Pavelow IV, with a deep "growl". They do look smart though so it could be time to camp outside WTM and get some piccies! ;)

The Bronco is a superb aeroplane, in fact I have a Desert Storm USMC "Long Nose" OV-10D model sitting on my desk.

G-BZGL and G-BZGK, both are ex Luftwaffe OV-10B target tugs now owned by Invicta Aviation Ltd, and they were supposed to be flying a couple years back. They were placed on the UK register in 2000, and are still awaiting their C of A's.

I believe there is an OV-10B operating in France, I saw it on one of the "Airshow 100" programmes at the Jersey Airshow, and it's a very sporty performer! I've been looking forward to seeing at least one of the two in the air since they arrived at Duxford. Lets hope we don't have to wait much longer. :)

Sadly, I aren't as clued up on aircraft as most of you chaps so I need some help. :o

As I was watching the cricket at Fleetwood yesterday, a series of old aircraft flew over, they were out over the sea, flying down towards Blackpool (some airshow maybe? )

I could make out a Herculess, a Dakota, and two single engined WW II planes, one of which may have been a Spit.

Latera sspit with invasion stripes came over (at least it looked like a later model Spit) and finally, a flying boat in CC colours. It was quite low, and looked as though it was a Catalina, although when it got closer, it didn't appear big enough.

Right lads - what was going on and do you know what planes were appearing?

I've seen a static Shakleton at both Duxford and Newark museums(both outdoors and not airworthy).Well if you know that there is an airworthy one she could have possibly seen it in Texas there. She described it as grey and my memory tells me most I've seen were that colour.

Smallish twin engined passenger jet taking off from Coventry. I've seen it several times. Always in blue colours. Can anyone help. I always see it just as I'm in a busy lane of traffic approaching that huge roundabout on A45.I'm thinking it's a Boeing 737?

I have been told that RAF Northolt will be holding it's annual family day tomorrow, unfortunately it's not open to the general public, but there are a few good viewing points around the outside.
So far today the aircraft arrivals are;
RAF Tornado, RAF Hawk, RAF Puma and the Martin Baker Meteor.
I spoke to a couple of the spotters down at one of the viewing points and they think that some if not most of the BBMF may make an appearance. Maybe NeilD could enlighten me?
As I write a Huey and 3 other helo's have just landed, I don't know what the 3 others are, they look a bit like a military version of a Hughs 500, and just left a RN. HP. Jetstream.

Could be a good day tomorrow.:) :) Aeroplanes and football what more could I want?

Hysteria in the local rag.

Jets stunt rattles homes and residents

That's the header on an article in today's local paper, it continues.
Worried readers flooded the Gazette office with phone calls after the high powered military jets were spotted screaming over rooftops around RAF Northolt.
Thundering Tornado jets terrified house-holders as they tore through the skies across the borough.
One resident said "I have lived here since 1968 and Ive never seen planes so low. They seemed to be at roof top height. It was a terrible noise, but that doesn't matter so much as for the safety of flying over residential areas."
Another resident said " It was ear-splitting, I thought it was going to hit the house, it was so low. They shouldn't be doing displays in a built up area, however clever the pilots are."
A spokesperson for Northolt apologised for the noise.;) ;)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I guess that's screwed it for a return next year, there's been complaints before, to the residents association (frustrated amateur politicians), I went to one meeting when this subject was brought up and asked the whinners "If you don't like aeroplanes and their noise why did you buy a property near an active RAF base?":mad:

Give me an airfield and green grass any time, cos if it goes it'll only end up another soulless housing estate or worse a huge commercial estate. Then the moaners will be complaining about additional traffic.

PS. The last Tornado left this morning.

NeilD
14th June 2006, 18:41
have to say though, I dont think the RAF always do themselves any favours.. you'd have hoped that the CRO would've contacted the local papers the week before so they could let the locals know whats going on in advance, rather than wait for the complaints, especially at a place like Northolt which doesnt normally have fast jets operating, and definately not normally FJ at weekends..

Spock1,
I did, some had been told that Northolt was for the chop and that there was no real RAF activity only small private aircraft, others moved in fully aware that it is an operation airfield but still complained because the noise and activity was more than they expected, tuff!!!
I don't think Northolt will be closed, ever, it offers a very secure environment for VIPs and other persons or things that require that situation.
