View Full Version : Sunlight Fading?

Mosquito

Can anyone tell me if the colours will fade on the models if subjected to some direct sunlight in a display cabinet? Also, I store boxes in plastic boxes in the loft. Should I seperate the boxes with acid free tissue paper? Your comments would be appreciated.

I personally would not display my models in direct sunlight as I am sure over time they would loose their sheen and fade.
As for storing in the loft use as much protection as you can. Esp on those damp winters nights unless you have heating in the loft.

Thanks for the advice Ascot, I guessed that sunlight might effect them.

If the display cabinet is wood, I would be more worried about my cabinet than a model.. Its a question I threw at the last forum.. I have a Tuck Hurricane that sits in direct sunlight, it doesnt seem to be too bad, but it does get moved around quite a lot.. Mrs A dustin...

We have a bay window which I feel is just begging to have a 32 Mossie sitting in it (really wanted a gleaming Red Arrows Hawk..!!).. when they get to £40.. might experiment..!! :D

Fraid it is but a dream old fruit...

(Personally, if they made a half decent model they would sell buckets of em... she who must be obeyed dont like camo swastikas an all that on the sideboard... so thats about me only hope of getting some blokey input into the room.. Dont suggest checkered libs..!! - more chance of a 32 Hawk than a 72 Connie..!!)

Ascot is absolutely right. The ultraviolet in natural sunlight will fade almost any paint, marking, print, poster, or artwork. If you have plastic parts on your models there is a certain degree of risk the cabinet or window glass will focus the sun's rays on your model and create heat spots. Not pretty.

Plastic modelers take advantage of this characteristic of sunlight by placing old yellowed decal sheets up against a sun-facing window. In time the yellow background will fade to a transparent clarity which makes them appear new. The trick is to remove the sheet before the colors start to fade as well....

Agent! Re your Hawk dream.......don't forget you're actually gonna have to negotiate a lot tougher with Mrs Agent cause you're gonna have to have 9 of em to make the formation!!!

That would look good in 1/32 scale. Wicked

Thanks, Agent, glad you found this tip useful. There's another point worth mentioning before you tape your old yellowed decal sheets up in your window.

Try to pick a window which does not collect condensation. Mrs. Agent is sure to notice your water-soluble decals sliding down her picture window..

Hhmmm - good point did not think of that - looking to gut my Study in October and put up a Display Cabinet, make sure it's towards the back of the room, and not near the Window as I had originally planned.....

Ahem!! Getting back on topic, gentlemen.
Heres a fine example of the kind of damage the sun will do to a clear canopy on your beloved AA's, not pretty. :(
You've been warned.

This sunlight fading is something I've wondered about, as I learn't a hard lesson with a Bader signed print. I've had a Malan Spitfire in the conservatory for 3 years now. The red on the wing roundels has gone a lighter shade, but the paint is fine. Sunlight will fade anything overtime and sometimes you can't tell until you put the faded item next to a minter.

Does Minter sit in your conservatory too?

I heard you get about Minter but sitting near peoples collections in their own houses, thats scary :D

Anyway I have a study room where the curtains are always closed and a low powered (I can't spell wattage :D ) bulb so hopefully no fading ;)

My three display cabinets are near a window which provides good reflected sunlight for viewing them and hasn't faded any paint so far. However direct sunlight will certainly fade colours especially on cardboard boxes, and even melt plastic bits. Which reminds me of the time I left my 1/48 scale Tamiya Lancaster in my car after showing it to a friend. When I came back after a few hours the wings had softened and drooped so bad I had to chuck the model out- bugger.
