CHC's weathered version is selling on Ebay and has attracted prices in excess of £100 but I resisted the offer in tonights CHC newsletter to buy one of the last 12 available. This is not a reflection on CHC, it is the fact that no matter what paint you put on it, it is still a nasty casting. Look for example at the undercarriage. Compare this picture with those on Tri's site. http://www.tricatus.co.uk/aa32108a.htm

So why is this model valuable? Because it is good, because it is very limited availability, or just because every one says it is? Does any one really like Corgi's 1/72 109's in general?
(I’m thinking of following No4’s example, buy the legend and do my own weathering)

Hmm. To each his own - I really like the model. Part of the reason I collect is for the collectability. Exclusivity is part of that - coolness is another. To me, this is a cool plane ;)
I don't think I'd ever get to the point of evaluating actual photos against a model to spot flaws. Not that there's anything wrong with that - being passionate about historical accuracy is another aspect of collecting.
The cool thing is that there's something for everyone in this hobby:D
BTW - thanks for the informative post!

For those wondering what DCR is talking about....(a mod of the Legends model posted on the US forum)...
This took all of about 30 minutes with an art pencil and Xacto knife, and from the right angles you'd never know it was missing the tropical filter! :P
(the main gear was removed and reglued at the proper angle too)

Got to respectfully disagree - I jumped at the chance of getting the weathered 109 at rrp.
Undercarrriage not the mae west I have to admit and that is a basic Corgi flaw but IMHO the weathered 109 is a truly excellent model. My one is 'flying' on it's stand and as I sit here looking up at it, the staining on the general undersurfaces of the wings, from the exhausts, guns etc. very lightly done paint chipping etc is spot on.
Am sure, in fact we all know, that there are some very skilful forumites who can produce fantastic plastic models or use die-cast as a basis for their own colour schemes but for people like me who want a quality, representative die-cast model of a particular sub-type, the CHC weathered and indeed unweathered, Me-109s (got them both!) fit the bill and I can live with the inherent flaws of the Corgi moulding used as the basis.Sure, some can modify Legends but I can't......
As for the tropical filter, wasn't that long ago that we were heaping abuse on Corgi for missing the filter on the Legend. To my mind, it is an absolutely essential piece of a desert 109's kit and can't be ignoring when assessing the quality of a model!! Sometimes, you can't win:rolleyes:
As for a model's worth - said it before, it is up to the individul to assess what the value is to them personally but IMPO the CHC purchase price was well worth it. E-bay prices? Well, depends how desperate a collector is. Personally, my CHC Me 109s will never be sold so value not an issue.
Each to their own, if an individual doesn't like a model, they don't have to buy it.If we all liked the same stuff, life would get so boring!;) :D
Thinking of the basic mouldings and what results, will be very interesting to see what Lev's input can do to the Gemini Aces.....:)no pressure oh great white!!:D

The 'Splay' is something no one seems to have mastered, it does let the mold down every so slightly but if you start comparing too closely then you'll have a very limited collection! :D
As RED2 has mentioned I think the new Gemini releases will be very interesting indeed.....

I was tempted by the £60 offer on the CHC letter, but did not take the plunge in the end. I will be noble and allow the collectors who really want one to have a better chance  (mooooo....is that a bull I can smell)
I think the Corgi 109 is a bit spindly at 1/72 and needs a real good paint job to make it look good.
I know when I am really happy with the 109 scheme when I find myself positioning it in front of a spitfire and making daga daga noises .

Well put sir, agree with you comments totally;) . As said the Bf109 has yet to be done 100% by anyone, each manufacturer has some imperfection in their casting:( . As it is, I like the Bf109 cast, and yes I altered my Legends undercarriage because they did look totally wrong, but as I'm no expert, if the wheels are a few degrees out..............so what:unsure: . Ignorance is bliss;)

I think it comes down to what you are willing to pay..... As a mass manufactured model these are great... If I was paying £100 or more then I would want something more and more accurate... Now, that differs with different collectors and the values do, but on the whole I think for a mass manufactured for the money model I have no problems with it....
Except the Corgi AN example with the silly mistake of the U/C being the wrong way... That was simply a Corgi Cock-up!

yes you have a point about the mass manufacturer bit, they are ok for the price, and some nice schemes like von werras and wespen
