Don't settle for seconf best chaps!! Don't forget that FW190 that recently had a test flight in Germany!! That'll be a terrfific partner in crime for the 109 next flying season. We could have some half decent doggy fights in our skies again! Whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Something like 4 singles and two two seats they were building...
sounds like fun... but a slight setback when the first two seater went off the end of the runway.. but I gather its back in the air now...

Martin, I presume you saw the article in Flypast ref Glen Lacey and what he is restoring.... on his list is an Me109E and a 190 'dora'... but interestingly he's also doing work on a UK owned 190 'A'... roll on Legends 2008 ! :D
Martin Bull
13th October 2004, 18:39
I know, I know.....trouble is, one reads those little snippets in FlyPast about 190s, 109s, Sabre-engined Tempests or whatever...next thing you know, they're crated up and shipped to the Good Ole US of A and a lucky new owner who inherited 10,000 oilwells.....

I'm pleased I managed to see it flying. It was superb, a real surprise to me. Probably expected it be very utilitarian with it being Russian WWII.

Well, I know it's galling to see these aircraft being shipped off to other parts [both the US or NZ] but the consolation is that at least they are still flying somewhere. The airworthy Hurricane population for one is about four times what it was 30 years ago. If it wasn't for the likes of Kermit Weeks I wonder what the preservation scene would consist of.
We simply don't have that kind of dosh over here, which makes the efforts of people like Carolyne Grace and the Sally B people [and everyone else in the UK scene] even more remarkable and IMHO deserving of every penny of public support they can get. Another factor would appear to be the more flexible approach of the FAA to certification .... which is why Air Atlantic's Shackleton can fly in the States but not over here.
As for our state sector, I wouldn't be at all suprised if that nice Mr. Gordon Brown hasn't already looked at the BBMF and wondered if it wouldn't make for a nice cost cutting excercise!

better all get your subscriptions in to the Lincs Lanc Assoc. as their contribution to the BBMF is surely one factor that'll keep the central bean-counters off their back...

Agree with you Dogtwenty, seen the arrows a few times and it becomes tedious (I go round they stalls at airshows when they start).
I think that we're in the minority however, so put yer tin hat on!

As we all know, 'Me109G' Red 7 was badly damaged in a landing accident earlier this year.
Take a look at the same aircraft displaying at La Ferte Alais last May......between 45/57 secs in, by Gosh does he nearly get it all wrong

Oh my yes.... That was a little "close". No modern technology there to save his backside..... Scary.....
His taxi run at the end seems a little fast compared to the likes of the Spits and P51's, etc at Duxford and what I have seen over here at airshows.

these 109s are tricky to land as everyone knows, black 6, mark hannah killed in a buchon, and the 109E in america had a very close escape this year i believe...seems only a matter of time before they become a cropper

It would be excellent to see some german warbirds in our skies and I will definately be there with my camera skyward!
The red arrows are the ambassadors of the RAF. Granted, once seen a few times they become a little tedious and lacking in new 'showstopping' maneuvers, but they are what instill the dream of flying in the young people. This is wat airshows are all about.

You are spot on!
That was VERY close indeed. I'll bet the crowd were expecting the worst as it disappeared below the tree line. The 109 is regarded as a "Bitch" to fly, but Charley Brown didn't appear to struggle with Black6. I think the pilot just got it wrong. It would have looked just as bad in a Spitfire or a Mustang!
Great clip MB

Good points Lev. He looked like he was struggling coming over the top of that loop and was a little low on energy, making it a risky manouver in any machine. Just very glad he saved it.
