You won't catch me going anywhere near it again, after download I had an .exe problem that I nver had before hand.
Ended up doing a full hard disk format with support from India, 7 pages of instructions ,thought about applying for a job in our IT after that.
I'll be sticking version 1.3 for now.

Being quite serious Mr Bull..
There is a Service Pack for Winders XP... its quite big so if yer have Broadband, it takes a good 20 mins or so to download it.. if yer aint got Broadband then if yer buy a PC mag this month its on (well might be)one of the freebie disks... dial up .. youll be online to Xmas..
Its quite a revamp what it does do is stop a lot of the pop ups and 'resets the security level on yer PC to something much higher than it was before...
Its seems to be okay on my machine, but there again I do update mine as soon as a new update comes along.. I THINK where peeps are having REAL problems is where they havent updated their compooters and are now trying to shove on this upgrade...
Anyway two hours later tonite and I have FINALLY uninstalled IL2 (flight sim and reinstalled... just got to download the upgrades I dont know why it wouldnt work but it SEEMS to now..
However my Fuji 602 Finepix camera software (XP) has just disappeared...
But my machine is running faster..... hey ho....
Lets try CFS 3........(another flight sim....!!)
PS all my software is genuine... which MAY be why others are being caught out..? (you might not be aware that your software aint genuine..)

I installed the XP SP2 yesterday with no problems, other than spending an inordinate amount of time switching back and forth from the MS Web site to Sony's (I have a Sony VAIO laptop) to figure out what I should install first.
I think the key is to update Windows and your computer manufacturer's software before you download SP2. (Took me 3.2 hours on a dial-up connection at 52000 bps)
The install was easy, and my machine is a bit faster. Lost no software, so I was just lucky, I guess.
Still don't know why I did it: SP2 is a security-oriented thing, and my McAfee VirusScan seems to do just fine....

Yeah I have had no issues, loaded both at home on my PC and also on my PC at Work, although not tried it on Mrs Stealths Laptop yet.
Thing to remember is if you have third Party Security and Virus checking go to the Security centre in the Control Panel and disable the Microsoft security bits and pieces.
They have enhanced the security quite a bit with SP2 so things that ran before may not run now. I now get annoying blocking messages in IE as it's stopping activeX and javascript from running. It also stops PDF from opening as well.
There is also pop-up blocking enabled as well.
Not yet had time to tread through all the settings and check them out.

I feel sure this has been bought up before on the forum, but I keep getting the prompt from my updater to install XP SP2. I've heard mixed reports ranging from "don't do it, it'll screw your system, flight sims etc", to "go for it, I had no problems".
Anyone had any problems with the update?

As for games... F/S 2004 and IL2.... Ive had no problems.....
What I did thugh was to go on the M/S website and order it via CD for free and it was far easier than downloading it.... Just in case of any errors.....
Hope that helps. Good luck.... I have also heard of nightmares too, but not encountered any problems as yet....

Well I have it running on the PC and Laptop at home, and we have been slowly upgrading the PC's at Work.
No problems to report apart from the annoying blocker you have on IE now.
My suggestion is if you are running a third party Software Firewall and Virus Checker just go into Control Panel and then Security Centre and turn off Firewall and Virus Checker, so that you then use the version you have installed.....
Oh and on another note Microsft have bought out a Spyware company and are currently producing their own version (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx), again been testing on my PC at work seems pretty stable and does detect any nasties on the box, only concern being I then ran Adaware SE and it found 10 cookie trackers that the MS product did not, so if you are using Adaware SE stick with that for the moment.
This community message brought to you by the Diecast Aviation Forum :D :D :D

P/J...........Real poo.... yep I put up the original thread..
Installed... Most games ( Flight Sims) disappeared, the shortcuts to Office needed 'reinstalling'... and the default locations needed reinputting.
BUT....
It now loads up faster...( even with all back to square one again)
The pop up preventer I feel is a better way of doing things......
(As in all PC's its now nearly 2 years old so its due for a change and am sure that it could be tidied up a little)

Have had no problems but I was reading on a computer forum that the updates do need to be installed along the way before you install SP2. The pop-up blocker is a bit annoying but brilliant. System seems to be tidied up. I am running Norton Antivirus and not Microsoft firewall, which I'm told is the better way to do it.
Try the anoraks on the computer forums first if you have any doubts.

Thanks guys. Is the popup killer optional, in other words you do have control over wether or not it's turned on? The reason I ask is that some sites use legitimate popups for ordering etc.
Has anyone else had the same issues a Agent regarding flightsim programs? I have a huge FS2004 setup now and would be really pi$$ed off if I lost it all!

I am an IT manager and we have rolled out SP2 on over 80 laptops running XP so far. No problems but we only run 'office' type applications. I have it on a couple of my own PC's and have found no problems either. I run CFS3 and various other games. The biggest problems I get with them is graphic drivers and Directx!
You can switch off the pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer. I use the Yahoo toolbar myself which has a nice blocker included. The SP2 firewall is a big step forward from the previous one but is still not as powerful as the Norton product.
I would recommend SP2 on the basis that it does increase the security of the PC (if you leave all the features switched on). However, I would make sure that you have as much of your data backed up as possible before you install (but we all do routine backups anyway!).

Thanks shuttle, I've done the deed downloaded SP2 and installed it. There doesn't seem to be any problems so far, and it shouldn't effect programs like Dreamweaver anyway. FS2004 is untouched and everything is as it should be, I've yet to try Il-2, but again there should be no issues, (I hope!).

Try switching off the firewall (as a test) then perform the operations again. If it works then you need to look at allowing traffic to and from that site with the firewall active.

Don't know if anyone can help.
since two night ago I can't view items on ebay. I get as far as the list of particular items showing, eg 'corgi aviation', but if I click on a particular item to view, the green bar goes across and stops with a data rate of zero.
I have tried the following. replaced adsl modem, leads, filters, reinstallation,
used upstairs phone socket with RJ45 extension.
Finally installing a adsl modem on the old comp upstairs enabled me to access without problems. So conclusion is computer/software related. Realise will probably need to reinstall xp again!
But why if I go onto US ebay can I view exactly the same items without a problem??? Have even cleared cookies/pages etc and reset web settings to default. Am convinced this is the problem, but can't find it! Any other web sites are accessing normally.
Damn well missed a very rare aviation book wednesday due to not being able to bid. So mad I was!!
So before I Fdisk/Reformat & install xp again, any help would be very much appreciated.
NB I promise hand on heart never to slag off s*itfires ever again ;)

You could try downloading the latest spyware removal tool from Microsoft. I used it to get rid of of spyware that I was aware of but couldn't, even when using AdAware on a regular basis. The Microsoft programme got rid of it along with some other stuff that I didn't know was there.

I think a lot of these problems are caused by mini's downloading stuff from music sites. Thank goodness my last mini is due to go to Uni soon.
Ad-Aware is a good download and also not too big to download. Snafu, you have broadband right? Drop me a PM with your e-mail address and I will e-mail you the exe in a zip file. Won't take long....
Also check if it has a "removalble" like Agent has suggested, I doubt it though, but worth a try.... So, opened any naughty e-mails lately? :D
Also try here. Web User had a test on all the Spyware removals this fortnight and this also came out tops...

If you get a second puter you need to get it networked. Otherwise she will insist that she needs to use the internet for some "really vital homework" (which means MSN)
Yeah, I agree... Networking em is easy enough and that way Agent you can limit mini's internet use through the network also. Ive got two PC's networked. One I use for work and the other for games and Mrs CFBC to use..... (firewalled em both, network protected em and each has indervidual anti-virus too)...

See your point on the network, however why not run em as two standalones with the one wireless Internet link so that if armageddon does happen it dont travel across from one puter to other... thing is if they want to go and find whatever... they will......
Yes, that also.. I took you at your point of not knowing when mini will be on an all night session, at least you will be able to restrict a 2am "surfing" by blocking it via a time method via the hub that is all or restrict certain sites via that (well mine I can if I want too)... I could stop Mrs CFBC checking out this site.... Hmmm. Thats a thought!! (If she had already, well it wouldn't be running now!!!).... :D
I have not got wireless, but surely if one PC catches a virus, then it can spead via wireless as easy as a network cable? Unless you unplug the wireless on the machine of course...
