View Full Version : Ones I Don't Get Bored With
Martin Bull

As we're all going through a 'muted enthusiasm' stage, I set to thinking about models I don't seem to get bored with. All of my models have their day - well, most of them, anyway :o - and like most collectors I go through phases of different interests.
But there's a few models which I seem to have on display all the time -
CHC Mossie
Butch Taylor Typhoon + Witty Sea Fury '130'
B-17G 'Bit O'Lace'
Lancaster 'S-for-Sugar'
Eastern Front Winter Camo Stuka ( the Corgi one )
Dragon P-51D 'BBD'
and finally G/A Plagis MkIX Spit
Nothing too profound here, just a handful that I always enjoy looking at.
Anyone else...?

Didn't I hear that someone else (Hobbymaster was it?) are picking up the baton with 1/32. I think a Dauntless was mentioned although it seemed a strange choice when there are still the standard "iconic" planes to be done, notably P47 and FW190, which I think would figure high on most people's wish lists. If you're going to bring out a model of the size of the Dauntless at 1/32 you could also consider Corsair, Hellcat and Stuka to name but a few.:)

Maybe it is because I am so knew to diecast collecting but there are no models that I get tired or looking at. I`ve all of my collection on display although it is starting to get a bit crowded after my spree at Legends. Now 135 models I just checked one of my early posts when I started posting on this forum my collection consisted of 75 models that`s an increase of 60 models in about 31/2 months, I think I`m in need of some serious therapy.  Send the men with their white coats:LOL:

Did you find that you became more discriminating over time? My first models were Armour ones but I soon realised that they didn't quite cut the mustard and my visits to this site put me on the right track for better ones.

I started with Corgi boondogger but thanks to this site they`ve now got me onto collecting Geminiaces:mad: :p  but in serious mood I must admit the quality and price of the Gemini models are better than Corgi at the moment(IMHO)

Interesting question. First thing that sprang to mind was my first jet purchase, the No. 12 Sqn. Buccaneer! Others include:
Lancasters KM-B and S-Sugar
GMP Tuskegee Mustang
Spitfire Mk VIII RG-V
P51 Hun hunter from Texas
1/32 Lane Spitfire
No. 74 Sqn. F4 Phantom
Battle Scared CHC 109
Kepford Corsair
Weathered Sunderland 330 Sqn. Norwegian
There're more but I can't list them all. Dieppe Spit is quite cool too.

That's the Corgi Sharks mouth one isn't it? It's a good scheme, but just with the Corgi JEJ ltd edition one and Edwards desert one, I've finished with the Corgi's later spits. Should have stopped at the VB's really but hey ho. Gemini now, oh corgi how you could've stollen Gemini's thunder or even stopped them from the word go!

Yes, sharks mouth it is. I hear you but I liked this one and the Edwards one so I got them. Actually wanted the Mk VIIIs. I can live with them because most my Spits are Corgis anyway. I tried one Dragon, one Witty and have a couple of GAs. I'll probably get more GAs (the Kent Spit springs immediately to mind!) but may just get the Russian Spit too.

Interesting choices, and I am amazed that peoples favourites are still mainly dominated by Corgi.
I have recently had a sort out and have no Corgi on display anymore, however, I have every single Gemini Aces and Hobby Master release out. I have to say, I am always drawn to the Hobby Masters and of praticular interest is the Mig-21 'Big Fish'...this is very odd as I am a warbirds man really! I just like the paint job and the perfect detailing Hobby Master have acheived....also good is the Japan Special Starfighter with the red and white middle.

The 109 that's really surprised me on how nice it is (even though its only 1:72), is the snow one from Gemini, it's an absolutely gorgeous little model. If they keep churning them out like this then I'll bite every time with me wallet:cool

Dunno why, but the 1/72 CC B-17 is always very prominent in the display and remains one of my all time favourites.....Immelman Stuka, BBMF set Lanc (Mickey the Moocher) and the Fighting Cocks Hunter always seem to survice the display rotations too.....
......and then there's the fantastic 1/72 Shack I bought ready built off ebay for under a tenner that I'm always admiring......only wish I had been the one to make it!

I have quite a few that I never get bored with.
Strawberry Bitch B-24 (bad joint lines and all)
Kepford Corsair
Mule Fw190
2nd Crabb B-25
Wick 109
Dootlebug He111
Bong P-38
Tropical (Acroma) Stuka
Hun Hunter P-51
Memphis Belle B-17
S is Sugar Lanc
Bader Spitfire
I only have one HM Dauntless and its very nice but I wish it had a crew as I display most of my models in flight. No Gemini yet. I can't get excited by more Spitfires, P-51s, & 109s. Need to see them add something different like a Macchi 202. Definitely need something to really rekindle the interest. Probably would be ok if with the new Corgi stuff but somewhere along the way they became Dragon ... never know when or if something is going to come out.

I never get bored of staring at my collection of Gemini Aces P-51B/Cs and Dragon P-51Ds. That's probably why they haven't been rotated out for the last four or five months. The only other birds that haven't been rotated are the Maltese ones - the Wellington, 2 Spitfires (Beurling & the MoM), 2 Hurricanes (Burges & the MoM) as well as the Faith, Hope & Charity Gladiators. Just realised my FOV 1/32 Normandy Spitfire has been on display since day 1. I could'nt be bothered putting it back in its !@#$ box & have'nt thought of any acquaintances I dislike enough to give it to.
It does stop the dust falling on the horizontal surface immediately below it, so it is serving some purpose :D
So definitley not bored with it......more perplexed with what to do with it:wacko:

I can think of some impressive ways to make it fly involving fireworks and a hearty amount of bailing twine :)

I was looking at the cabinets again last night and i have to say i'm in love with Wittys Sea Furies. Got three of them so far, 130, 110 and this morning the Ormand Haydon-Baillie one dropped through the door. Gorgeous model, love the red/white spinner and for £20 its a steal even at full RRP.

Thought this thread was worth a bump, be nice to hear the views of the newer members.
Off the top of me head...
Corgi Halifax B.III Friday the 13th Never been off display. Also the only 'Heavy' currently on display as a bigger cabinet is needed.
AeroArt P-51D Mustangs, Mary Mac and American Beauty Not strictly accurate representations of WW2 aircraft (They're 2 seaters), but superior finish and build quality -lovely.:) Permanent residence in the cabinet.
Gemini Aces Spit IX, Spirit of Kent and Mustang P-51B, Berlin Express - As good as it gets for 1/72nd Warbirds, detail, finish, colours all terrific.
Corgi Swordfish. All of them! I have three although only the Floatplane is currently on display. When Corgi get it right they're as good as anybody.
The last two Corgi Hawker Typhoons - The Hound finally realising the potential of the casting - have a real "Don't mess with me" look to them.
Dragon's P-51D Petie 2nd - Looked for one for ages, then finally found it for an almost pocket money price. I like the Hound's Mustangs for all their faults, but this jewell really shows how it should be done - a real Mustang in miniature rather than a rough approximation...
Another Dragon, their clipped wing and stripey Spit Vb. Not without it's faults, and Dragon's Spits look a little -chunky -to me, but great colours, finish and excellent, yet subtle surface detailling.
Corgi's Lysander Have the desert one and it just looks absolutely right. If it wasn't for the Swordfish people would be calling this Corgi's best casting.
Corgi's Gibson Mossie. It's a Mossie. It's Gibson. It's beautifully finished and I think rejuvinated a casting that some were regarding as a bit tired. And produced with some input from a Forum member. Another one never off display.
Corgi's Lancasters. Nuff said!:D (Have 4 now - Just wish I had room to display them...)
Skymax's Hawker Tempest V I have the first one (G.E. Kosh, No.3 Sqn.) Apart fom slight u/c issues, pretty much right first time. I like the whole presentation of these Skymax models, simple, no fuss packaging containing a product which I think is anything but the budget range we were initially expecting. Light years ahead of Ixo and Atlas, for example.:)
Corgi's 1/32nd Spitfire 1a: PR-F Like most of Corgi's Spits the wings are a bit flat, (And mine's been in the wars a bit:o ) but if I ever have to sell up, this and the Lancs will be the last to, no correction, I'll never let them go.:)

Ones I just want to keep out to look at (in no particular order) include:
McNight Hurribox - Just looks right
The latest Corgi Typhoon with bombs - great build, great colours and mean looking)
Corgi ME109E (Wick) Not the most accurate of schemes but it looks great
Corgi Me 110 (Sharkemouth version) Its has faults but these are more than off set by the obvious quality of the product.
GA Plagis Spitfire Just a great model
GA Princess Elizabeth P51B/C Just everything a model should be
Dragon Cyber Hobby Kansa Tornado P47 Just demonstrates that Dragon could really deliver the goods.

At present for me the list would be:
22 Sqn SAR Sea King. An iconic prototype and the model really does do it justice
Admiral Prune Lanc. 'Nuf said. A real classic.
Esmonde Swordfish. They're all lovely models, but for me this is the pick of the bunch, perfectly executed.
Afghanistan Chinook. Not an easy one to pull of, but this does it beatutifully. Very nice!
41 Sqn Jaguar T2. Not the nearest to perfection Corgi have ever come, but it does have the look and the lines of the T-bird spot on. The real aircraft is a favourite of mine, and the model has the spirit of it nailed.
Schoppler 262. The best of the 262s by a country mile in my opinion, and a nice tool at that.
And an honourable mention has to go to my Transport Command trio of Dakota, Comet and Britannia. I just love them! :D

The HM F-105 still gets stroked and taken out for air quite often, the SR-71 as well.
Of my "Older" models, the GA Mk-IX Spitfire, 1/32 Lane Spit, Admiral Prune and Friday 13th are all favourites.
I've developing dislikes of my 1/48 B-26 (Dominions Revenge) as well as the Ju-87 (anti tank) and the P-38. It's just size I think that is starting to get to me. They have all recently been "pushed to the back".
