With all the talk of forthcoming Beaufighter moulds I got quite excited when visiting a diecast dealer's website and there was a nice big photo of one, prominently displayed. It proved to be IXO unfortunately. Is this a new one by them? Is it any good? I have their Do335 which I quite like because it's so wierd and I'm thinking of getting one of their Jap jobs. The Beau looked like it had radar and a full set of rockets underwing. Is this correct? I thought only nightfighters had the nose arrow type radar.:)

If so then it shouldn't have the AI aerial. Might be the angle but it looks like it is missing the bracing struts on the undercarriage.

Yes. That's the one. It looks okay to my untutored eye, although I take your point about the undercarriage strut. Is it a new release of theirs do you know?

First time I've seen this one and I didn't see the first in the metal but I think there are some pics in an earlier thread of that one which will give a better idea of the quality..

I have that one. Not bad, not great. Actually I've been rather happy with it. Plenty of room for improvement. It'll do until someone does a better one.

It has been out for months in the US, but only just hit these shores.
It is OK, but not great (even to my non-expert eye) and it did get quite a bit of stick from the rivet counters because of the errors.....I've had it for a while and whilst it fills a gap, I will replace it if and when a better one comes along.....

I like Ixo for what they are a very cheap diecast and great value and they do some nice and odd subjects. But this does not stop folks paying well over the odds for what is just over a toy. But there is a charm about toy like models and collectors do like them. The RRP in the UK is £10.99 for all models including the Beau. I am having one for my collection and at that price the arials are being snapped off.

Yep! Quite agree... For the money they are "ok" which is something I have said about every model produced... Both expensive and non expensive. You have to have a compremise somewhere and somehow, but the IXO's are a very budget range, but saying that they have brought out some very obscure aircraft and continue to do so and hence winning collectors hearts! (Even if it's just as a stop gap). :)

I have a small number of these in my collection along with all the rest which are nealy all ex repaired of badly damaged boxes. It a shame they are not supplied right in the UK and its all a bit hit and miss. I am lead to belive they all start out as Altya on the Mags and if theres any surplus over the issues these are then re-packaged as Ixo and then distributed. Thats why some fetch good prices as there is no supply chain. We my even get their tank range one day.

I love mine - hell, the panel lines don't match up and you can't display it with the wheels up but....who cares, its a Beaufighter!! :cool
cost me £30/65 bucks - but its never gone off display
the radar aerial is a bit of a sticking point for rivet counters - but mine broke off getting it out the box...:D
there is suppose to be a gun camera in that position, so I snipped a bit off a Dragon 190 aerial and stuck that in the hole
works for me!

The Beau is among the few good IXOs.
The main area to improve is the very visible cockpit (the canopy isn't too difficult to remove), wich requires repainting.
Prefer the black nightfighter, so the gaps and inked panel lines will be merely noticeable.:cool:

I was talking to a dealer I use earlier and he is talking about stocking the IXO stuff.
Web site is http://www.retrotoys2004.com/index.asp
The only problem with that is according to my retailer is orders and delivery dates don't seem to mean very much to IXO half the stuff ordered never turns up weeks after the supposed delivery date has gone by:D

Please refer to my earlier post ref Altya If the mag issue is popular then none get re-packaged as Ixo hence the problem with the supply chain so nobody can say when things are going to be released. This Beau model for example should have been delivered yonks ago.

some of the ixo/altaya stuff is pretty good for the price particularly the italian and unusual german models.i also rate the mustang as second only to the dragon just needs a bit of refining ie a new prop and spinner[resin replacements can be sourced from hannants]i did this with the BBD release have stripped the markings off and will use some of my extensive decal collection to do a prune!

Be interesting to see how they fill in the enormous recess beneath the underwing rocket assemblies....

Yup, they are manufactured for Altaya by the dudes who run IXO & other brands. But the IXO branded stuff is definately not repackaged surplus. Also if its popular on the mag, it will be re-manufactured under IXO (obvious?), unpopular stuff probably wont be. Any surplus that altaya/deag has is disposed of elsewhere.
A very sharp supply chain exists, pretty much all IXO branded stuff is manufactured to order (off the back of existing moulds for altaya..very easy). If it aint ordered on a retail/wholesale level it just wont turn up. True, this 'tightness' can lead to higher prices on older stuff. But this is simply supply almost perfectly meeting demand, no one wants stock piled high that wont shift, so thats how it is.
As for delivery dates, well, they are way off, sometimes by months...but IXO is only really a small part of a bigger empire so I guess things get pushed back.

Mine's turned up; for 10.99 I'm happy with it - when I get time I will be fixing the errors. Nice big chunk of metal!
Might take some pics later today if I get time.

Yes Mr D... For around £10-£15 quid then this is a very nice piece of diecast indeed for the money.
I have picked one up myself too and have to agree.... Was also told that they were stationed near Cleethorpes and a memorial and plaque now stands there. A little local history too.

also has this poem by Gavin Ewart written on the side
When a Beau goes in
Into the drink
It makes you think
Because, you see, they always sink;
But nobody says "Poor lad!"
Or goes about looking sad;
Because, you see, it's war,
It's the unalterable law.
Although it's perfectly certain
The pilot's gone for a Burton
And the observer too,
It's nothing to do with you;
And if they both should go
To a land where falls no rain nor hail nor driven snow---
Here, there, or anywhere,
Do you suppose THEY care?
You shouldn't cry
Or say a prayer or sigh.
In the cold sea, in the dark
It isn't a lark
But it isn't Original Sin---
It's just a Beau going in.

I would like to think that the pooch could knock some of the rough edges off that IXO casting... however looking at the Typhoon it could create other 'howlers'..:(

No doubt Corgi could, but at three or four times the cost! :D :D I would imagine that if IXO charged that amount we could get a better casting.
For £11 I am not complaining. ;) :)

I got one the other day, its MUCH better than I expected, nice paint job for the money, unusual subject (RCAF 404 Sqn) and the correct shape, there are a couple of errors, but for less than ten pounds its brilliant. When Corgi produce a Beaufighter it will still have errors but they will want £50 for it !!!
