Spent a very entertaining couple of hours with IL2 tonight.. for some reason Service Pack 2 had deleted the software, well I couldnt find it so reinstalled Forgotten Battles and it does run a lot better for some reason.. (even more reason for using the CFS3 disks as drinks mats..) then loaded the two patches on, up to version 1.22 which gives you B17's and Japanese Ki-84 the latter which I had never flown until this evening.. excellent flight pattern... if its realistic, then that was some bird..!!
So go in to Quick Mission Builder..
Select 4 Ki-84's for your flight.. leave the rest of the friendlies blank - dont want it too easy, then hostile 2 lots of 4 P-51's and 2 lots of 4 P-47's and give them an Ace skill.. start at 10,000 feet.. its a very entertaining way to spend a couple of hours being continually hounded.. (Flight realism set to easy so you dont keep spinning out and unlimited ammo..).. seems if you can survive the first couple of minutes, a long as you keep yer speed up you might survive... (Your three other wingmen dont.. but it saves all 16 latching on to you..)
Anyone else any favourite settings..?

Blimey you have obviously spent more time playing this than me.
Need to get mine reloaded as I did the preverbial six-month rebuild of the PC a couple of weeks ago and have not got around to loading it yet.
Have to say though one of the better FS's around. Ubisoft do develop class software.

It is by FAR the best flight sim and it really should be £50 when compared with the Microsoft offering (FS2004 excepted.. last time I got flamed for calling this a game..), I havent even started with either the Aces pack or the Battle over Europe add on and later this month, we have Pacific Fighters hitting the shelves..
Most of the time I battle with the Quick Mission builder as it gives you the opportunity to pit plane against plane, whether you want a good chance of survival or none at all. The B17's are an excellent (freebie) add on through the 1.22 patch... you get within range and you get shot down, simple as that, so as per the real thing, you stay out of range and pop at them with your cannon, take em head on or zoom through the formations. The one plane that would be good (as it was) for 17's would be the Me110 as it did have very concentrated firepower.. Selecting to play against fighters is a different kettle of fish as they will come after you, some with a vengence, the AI is resonable, it falters a little if you overshoot anything, they are not quick enough to take a pot at you...
Anyway.. If you havent got this, have a PC of 2Ghz/256/64 or better, then at £7.99 it is an absolute steal........Works with a 2 button joystick... Mrs Agent, if you are watching, can I please have one of them trembly force feedbacky joysticky things for Xmas...

I tried IL2 F/B some time back and found that my machine just couldn't handle it, however since then I've added a 120 meg Ge-Force card so things might run better now. I've seen some screenies around the web and it does look really impressive, but I still like the real world navigation and the ability to add third party addons in CFS2. The Alphasim Swordfish includes a number of skins including the black RAF Coastal Command version, the Bismark mission and also comes with a MAC ship!
The only down side to CFS2 is that the AI is crappy and you find yourself screaming at the computer for them to do something!! Hows the mission builder in IL2 F/B?

OK I have an intel 2Ghz CPU with 512mb RAM and a 128mb Ge-force Verto graphics card. I looked at up-gunning the RAM to 1Gb, but as they need to run in pairs I will have to replace my two 256Mb sticks with 512's costing £76 each! Well that's how much PC World were charging, but they were also charging £49.99 for Flight Simulator 2002, that's not a typo yes 2002, stamping down on prices my ar$e!!
I'm back in the USA in March so I may have a word with a buddy of mine and get two 512Mb RAM sticks out there, should be much cheaper. ;)

To be honest P/J, that should run it ok, but the memory may halp or even a new graphics card instead of more memory..... Try Ebuyer.com for memory.... And perhaps a new card.... I buy all my stuff there and I believe Stealth uses them now too. AND no I don't work for em Mr Mods.... :p

UBISOFTS new game 'Pacific Fighters' is just out and i can highly recommend it.
The fun you will have trying to get your aircraft down on a carrier,it's definately not as easy as you might think.
Hats off to the guys who used to have to do it for a living.

Doesn't really need reviewing as anyone familiar with IL2 or FB will feel straight at home as most of the controls are the same.
You might be interested to know that there is a flyable Beaufighter (haven't tried it out yet).
Spent most of this afternoon trying to land a Corsair and then a Seafire.Strangely enough i found the Seafire easier to get down than the Corsair.
I can definately relate to all that wartime footage they show on Tv of carrier landings/controlled crashes as most of mine were like that (crashes that is :) )

It's a simple one, but I still like to fill the sky with He-111's and go at them in my cannon armed Hurricane. Full realism with the exception of unlimited fuel and ammo.

It was something I tried on CFS2 but really it was no go area even with their automated landing system.... Agent very rarely makes it back to a land base let alone a bloomin carrier.... specially when fighting 17's....

Ah can wait.. too much fun at the moment with me Ki-84 and the B17's.. In fact think sometimes its easier taking on the P47's and P51's cos they chase you and yer can get down on the deck.
What I would like to see is set of mountains for IL2/FB/etc as the landscape is a little flat but there again thats why it is so good as a sim as the referesh rate is all in the plane.. (hence the carrier operations) and its still better than flying over photographs....

Ok guys, I've taken the plunge and loaded F/B on my PC. At the moment I'm finding it difficult to get to grips with the game, any tips to train the beginner?
I'm still used to European Air War. Don't laugh, with the new freeware third addons it's still a great sim, highly addictive, and one of the few older generation sims that will run on XP! I still use CFS2 too, but EAW is always the game I go back to.
I love the graphics in IL2 F/B, and I would like to play it more, but the training missions are crap, they should let the pilot take over at any point, rather than the computer running the whole mission. This is strange as Flanker 2.0 (by the same team) allowed the pilot to take control in training missions, am I missing something here?
Agent X20
29th November 2004, 22:37
Tend to go for the quick combat modes.. pit yourself (whatever you fancy) against dome P51's P47's FW190's... (best not to do it in a P40..!! The overspecced fighters are (again) the Hurricane with Cannons.. Me109 with underwings and for me the Ki84..)
The one problem with Il2 is the missions, they are too long apart from the ones where the enemy are attacking your aerodrome.. hence the preference for the quick combat..
Them (16 of) versus about 4 of you ensures that you are not omitted from the action and get to it.. start with easy realism.. working up to hard.. but best to leave unlimited ammo on otherwise yer tend to run out.. can you land and re-arm..? Watch out that engine dont get to hot...
Best to download the patches from the IL2 site ( to v 1.22) which also gives the B17 and Jap fighters...
And when you play ..start playing from a fresh newly booted computer... it runs faster..
no4mkit
30th November 2004, 05:33
I'd agree with Agent, PJ. Skip the training and go to the quick combat mode. You can set it up as training by not putting any opposition aircraft up, leaving you free to roam and get used to the controls. You can even try some landings and takeoffs when your ready.
Agent X20
30th November 2004, 11:41
Quick combat mode puts you in the air.. takeoffs are an art, but once mastered, you shouldnt have no trouble getting airborne.. same with landings, although in quick combat, if the odds are stacked against you, you invariably aint coming home in one piece... (if you dont have a good ratio, they dont seem to be able to seek you out and come after you.. which entails you doing the chasing and it can take ages for you to firstly find them and secondly catch them up...)
All good fun... suppose if there is any fault, it is that the AI needs sharpening up.. they dont seem to latch on to any advantage (e.g. when you overshoot..!!)
planejunky
30th November 2004, 12:21
The over shooting thing seems to be a big issue with most sims, EAW, CFS1 & 2 and no doubt CFS3 too, in reality you would have your @rse shot off trying something like that! I answered my own question last night after I posted, and found the quick combat editor. I set up a few 1 v 1 combats, which weren't too bad, but it definately favours the Russians I find. I was flying an Fw190D-9, against an La-7 and the La7 was all over me!
The real clincher for me is that you can fly quick air to ground missions, a real bonus over CFS2, though this is available in EAW where my rocket Typhoons come out to play! I flew the P-39Q against a convoy, added a bit of AAA and four Bf109G-6's and what a great scrap!
Cheers Agent for your help. I found a great skins site at www.il2skins.com, where they have thousands of freeware skins for IL2, IL2 Forgotten Battles, and the European addon. ;)

My thoughts exactly, even with the filters it's a huge site and you could spend more time looking for skins than playing the game! :D
There is a freeware skin manager available too at Skinners Heaven (http://www.1java.org/sh/) that allows you manage large numbers of addon skins. I had a quick play with it last night, but was having problems inserting the new skins over the old ones, I'm probably doing something wrong, but I'm sure I'll sort it! :D
Agent X20
30th November 2004, 13:38
No problem. P/J. you can spend more time looking at skins, although it does solve the eternal problem of the missing swastikas... (You all thought Dragon was bad... No swazis on IL2 or CFS...!!) However have found the ones for Il2 to be okay.. at least you can get roundels and stars and bars on the respective machines.. although Jappo Agent does like playing 51 against 51...
Dont forget that in 2 seaters plus control C puts you in as gunner... good for the odd pop
Yep the AI (on all these sims) is a little suspect..especially flying through debris.. and overshoots.
The actual fight models I found were better than CFS1 (where the Hurricane is practically unbeatable) CFS 2 where the Wildcat could outfly the best of Zeros.. CFS 3 (well thats just krap) however again the Hurricane in IL2 is quite a formidable beastie in that it doesnt (seem to) get blown out of the sky after strike #1.. The Me109G with the underwing cannons has awsome firepower (as does the Me110 .. Is there a flyable one..?) The Jap Zero and 110 disintegrate after the first shots, which is a bummer says Jap Agent, cos the Zero is nice to fly and he does get a remarkable kick out of shooting down P51's in it, trouble is if the US pilot spits at him, his plane catches fire...
Think what is excellent with IL2 is that in itself it is a history lesson... pit yourself in the 1938 Hurricane against the He111's and it can take a fair old while to shoot one down.. Then try it in a P51..(surprised that 6 x 0.5 ins are not more destructive).. then a Me109/262 with cannons.. it does illustrate just how far fighters came in five or so years..
.. and all this for £7.99..!! :D

Well for my money, the P-39 is a real hoot! That 37mm cannon is awesome, great for taking out armour and blowing the undercarriage legs off Stuka's too! :D
I found the switch that turns off the default markings, shame they went all PC on us over the Swasika's, thankfully there are plenty of talented people out there to put it right! ;)

I set up a few 1 v 1 combats, which weren't too bad, but it definately favours the Russians I find. I was flying an Fw190D-9, against an La-7 and the La7 was all over me!
It's possible there's a built in bias, but the La-7 wouldn't be a good benchmark as it's at least on par if not better than the Dora! When I fly Russian fighters on dogfights it's usually an La-7 or Yak-3 vs equivalent FW or BF. Veteran settings on both sides, full real except gas and bullets. It's always a good long duel, but the Russians usually win. Tried the reverse scenario and my odds were not as good, but that's no scientific assessment by any means. Still, haven't found anything that will out turn the Yak.
As for the A/I not taking advantage in overshoots, has anyone tried giving the enemy a higher status? ie: you=veteran, them=ace? I'm going to experiment and see if that changes anything... :)

Oh yes the La-7 was a remarkable machine, and it's later stablemate the La-9 were superb! We had an La-9 here in the UK last year, and that is one hellava machine to watch in the air! :D
Had a good La-7 Vs Late 109G scrap tonight after my evening class, well I needed some excitement after a night of Dreamweaver web design! It's a great sim, it'll just take time to settle in to it properly. I ordered the Aces Expansion Pack this today, so I hope to add some Mustangs and Spits to the proceedings by the weekend! :D

You should be on 1.22....
Best way to get there IMHO is to go from 1.0 (as in base) to 1.1 first.. then from 1.1 to 1.22.. but see now that you can go straight to 1.22 from 1.0.. watch out though you are talking 120MB plus..
1.22 (apart from B17's and Jappo stuff) SEEMS to make the sim a little smoother with less jerks..
Dont try loading the Aces stuff on if you aint got Aces...

Superb, thanks for the link I'm now patched to 1.22. I will of course need the Aces patch too, hopefully it'll arrive by the weekend! Apparently even with Aces, you still can't load western European maps on the quick mission editor, so I wonder if the patch has sorted that out, especially at over 100mb! How the hell would you cope downloading all that with a 56k modem?

DO NOT PUT THE ACES PATCH ON UNTIL YOU GET THE SOFTWARE... (It totally screws up IL2/FB...) (Just trying to see if planes were available if any at all tee hee...)
Sorry it (1.22) adds
A Zero.. actually quite a larf and an accomplishment to shoot down P51D's.. medal there for Jappo Agent
A Ki-84.. which is a superb bit of kit.. fast, goes round corners and nicely armed.. see the Ki-100 is on their site.. fearsome weapon..
Both Jappos though when threatened immediately burst into flame... :D :D :D
A P51D.. Ace plane and sounds like the cadillac of th eskies.. only poor point is the 0.5's.. I dont believe they were that inneffective were they...??
B17 as a non flyable .. but effective against you..
Fiat G50 .. another non flyer....very manoueverable... much more so than I am sure the actual plane ever was

Dunno, but I find the same with the 8 x 50 cal on the P-47. I would think all that lead would have quicker effect than it does.
Haven't checked if the early Hurricanes are available with only .303's ( I always go for the IIC with 4 x 20mm) but I'll try that for comparison if so. Better double check that the unlimited ammo option is on...

The Hurricanes.. against the 111's you have to get in close and pepper till bits fly off that are necessary for continued flight... If up close, you can get to kill a 111 with 15 seconds of ammo.. You cant from far away.. which is what they said in all the books etc... just shows how brave/mad they must have been.. but they could then pop down, re-arm and back up again...

Yes I have added plenty to CFS2, including the payware BBMF, and Mustang Vs Fw190 addon packs, definately more European than Pacific. My only issue is that the green euro textures are a bit awful in CFS2, CFS1 was much better terrain wise!
It may be possible to alter the terrains in IL2 FB, they certainly made a superb job in EAW creating summer, winter, and autumn terrain sets (spring being the default terrain setting), and a smart desert campaign. I don't know of any similar IL2 FB scenery addons, but I'm only now starting to find my way about the IL2 FB world, so they may already be there. I have seen screen shots of Spit IX's over the desert, are they on the addon packs?
It's interesting that sim developers have at last realised that if you have open software architecture, the game will have a long life as people will always add to it. This is why games like European Air War (1998) still have a huge following nearly seven years on. I think this was helped by the fact it still runs on XP where most games of that generation fell over and died! I think it will be the same with IL2, providing that third parties are willing to give time and effort for the good of the community that surrounds it. :)

Be careful Agent, you may strain yourself thinking too hard like that... :D
It was nothing of the sort dear fella.. Just a simple question that was all.... Nowt to do with keyboards or "lots".... :p
It was merely a question for our members to find out how many play the P.F flight sim as I was talking to a member at the w/e who flies with a couple of friends via online gaming that was all..... Aha... Put two and two together now...?
Was just a thought..... Nothing more.....
No4. I think it is a dam good game with excellent graphics and very very good gameplay, although I cannot land a dam aircraft for my life (and that does depend on it during the game - :D). It is well worth the money now as the price has come down since it's release.....
Was just wondering how many of you guys play the sim that is all... :)

Thanks CFBC, I love IL2FB+ AEP so PF has been in the sights for a while. All I needed was an excuse so with that I might just go get it today! :D ;)
I do fine landing on the ground but I expect a carrier will be a lot tougher challenge. How realistic does it get? If you crash onto the deck can you slide off into the sea? :)

Oh yes and a whole lost more besides..... Don;t forget the wire you have to hook sometimes.... Miss it, splash.... Catch it, don;t throttle down and twang followed by a splash.....

Ya just need a steady hand, CFBC. A few pints usually works for me. :D
And if I crash and burn anyway, I step away from the PC reciting "any landing you can walk away from is a good landing". ;)

Just wondered.

Big problem I find with IL2 is that you cant fast forward to the action, well you can go at a rate of X8 but even then it can be a long time..
So the missions are great when someone is overflying your airfield.. :D
Otherwise the add ons only have 'value' if they give you new types to fly..
350 missions.. almost a lifetime... :D

Does anyone know where I can get it? I've been getting great VFM from the un-enhanced forgotten battles, but I fancy something a bit more local. With AEP and Aces Compaigns Expansion you can - sort of - fly the battle of Britain. The AEP doesn't seem to be on sale (at least available) anywhere - even Ebay. At the moment I can't fly a Spitfire, and this is just a bit frustrating.
Any tips on where to find it, or perhaps someone would like to sell? :-)
Have said all that I'm really enjoying the Hurri missions provided by "Battle over Europe" (a set of free downloadable RAF campaigns based in the South of England, but actually the maps are somewhere in Finland). I have a new respect for my sturdy Hurri, but it could be a bit quicker!

I got Pacific Fighters last weekend, it's really good and embeds itself nicely into the existing IL2-FB/AEP software. You get a British carrier and Seafires, as well as the Beaufighter. Sinking ships with torpedoes is a very satisfying way of blowing of some preasure! :D

Install FB first, and if you have the Battle over Europe addon, you can install that too. Patch them with the above.
Install Aces, and add the two patches.
Install Pacific Fighters, ensuring that you pick the merged into IL-2 FB/Aces option.
This will take your installation to version 3.00. Now add the four patches in order, and this will take you up to v4.03.

Don't forget to install the patches in the correct order, or you'll end up with a mess! ;) For PF carrier ops you'll need to manually assign a key for the tailhook, I've just used H as it's easy to remember.
After watching that very good programme about HMS Ark Royal, I thought I'd try landing a Seafire on a carrier deck. My first landing was great, apart from it was a US Navy ship! So I took off again to find the British carrier, which was not far behind.
All was well and good, I spotted the ship, lowered my gear, flaps, and arrestor hook for the perfect landing. Well as you can see by the picture below, I got on board ok but the Seafire had a reputation for propstrikes, and I can now vouch that it's all true! :D
I like the attention to detail, as the Seafire had wood blades, nicely sheared off in this case! ;) :D

Just a little info regarding the IL-2 v4.03 update. You will now know that this latest patch gives us two Mossie's and a Tempest, however in order to add new skins for these aircraft you will need to create new aircraft folders in the game.
For those new to this, the skins can be located at : Program Files/Ubi Soft/IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles/PaintSchemes/skins
You will find a list of folders for all the types used in the game. For some reason the folders for the Mossies and Tempest were not added, so you will need to manually create three folders and name them as follows:
MosquitoBMkIV
MosquitoFBMkVI
TempestMkV
I would recommend Servals skin manager to install skins as it automatically unzips and installs them, with the exception of the Mossie and Tempest which will have to be manually installed into the folders mentioned above. This program can be downloaded from here (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/colours/tools.html).
For a great skin site visit www.flying-legends.net You will have to register (free of charge) however you will currently find over 3000 skins for IL-2 FB/ Pacific Fighters. There is now a skin set for Operation Jericho, as well as some far east Beaufighters and Mossies!

No problem mate, pleased to be of help. Here's some more screenies of the Seafire, and a spot of ship busting Beaufighter style!
I'm hoping and praying that Corgi do a model of Geoff Fisken's RNZAF Kittyhawk "Wairarapa Wildcat II" (last screenshot), this is a very famous scheme, and I believe that Geoff was the highest scoring of the Commonwealth aces.

Great screen shots. I have not played IL2 for a while but this thread prompted me to have a go again. Brilliant. I have IL2 , OPERATION BARBAROSSA, FALL BLAU, Pacific Fighters and Forgotten battles, All except PF picked up for about £7 each at filling stations! I want to get the Aces / Europe Edition and then try and reload everything with the patches mentioned already.
One of my favourite pastimes is lining up behind a baddy then using Ctrl F8 to zoom to him and trying to correct my aim by the line of tracer flying past him. It's tricky but you get some lovely close up shots of the damage, canopies coming off, aircrew hitting the silk. :D :D :D :D

The detail is superb, you'll notice that the arresting cable is actually attached to the hook on that Seafire! I found that you need to be careful of bailed out pilots, I dived down thinking it was an aircraft, where it was actually an enemy pilot in freefall! For some reason if you hit a chute or a pilot your aircraft explodes, obviously a little bug that no one thought of.
Flew the Mossie last night and was a little dissapointed, the gunsight is not lined up properly so you can't aim your guns. There have been numerous other problems reported for this aircraft, so standby for yet another patch guys! Hopefully they'll give it rockets too, and a Molens gun would be very handy!
You'll probably have to hunt around for Ace's, as it's getting hard to come by mate. ;)

Haven't seen that before, but I believe there's a new IL-2 Collection disk due out so that may be it.
Battle over Europe puts in twelve campaigns six USAAF and six Luftwaffe. (Apparently the RAF, RCAF, RNZAF, RAAF, Poles, Czech's, Free French, Free Norwegians, Free Dutch, Free Danes, weren't involved in Europe   )
I bought Aces at the same time as BoE so it's hard to judge what it did add to the sim other than the campaigns and new single missions. I think it also puts in new flyable P-51's P-47's, and western front skins for the Bf-109's and non-flyable B-17's.
I've just checked, and it's currently available from Just Flight at £9.99 go get'em Little Friends! :D

I am not very clever so I was wondering if so noble sir could list all the official adds on IL2FB are what order they should be bought and installed.
The main parts are installed as follows.
IL-2 Forgotten Battles (plus 3 official patches)
Aces Expansion* (plus 2 official patches)
Pacific Fighters (plus 4 official patches)
Altogether these form the core of the game and it's features.
The patches are also official upgrades and add certain features and aircraft. The last patch (v4.03) added a Mossie and Tempest. I listed the patches earlier so won't list them again here.
Battle over Europe, Op Fallblau, Op Barbarossa and Eastern Thunder are simply third party enhancements that add into the exsisting game's engine, therefore no patches are needed. They are similar to the expansions you could buy for CFS2 such as Mustang Vs Fw190, Combat Aces, Dambusters, BBMF etc. I would however add these after you install FB, and before you install the Aces pack.
I gave a link to the Flying-Legends skin site, please note that they are moving server, and will be down for five days (hopefully).
* Be warned, this is like rocking horse sh1t to get hold of now. My advice is if you see it, get it! :D

Seems about 4 Tempests versus 16 FW190's/late 109's gives you a good run for your money and provides an 'enjoyable' way of spending half an hour or so...
The Mossie is great to fly and okay is not as agile as a single engined fighter, but does have the speed to participate which the likes of the A20 and Beaufighter dont seem to have.. as to the comment.......
Flew the Mossie last night and was a little dissapointed, the gunsight is not lined up properly so you can't aim your guns.
.....above.. no problem with the gunsight, sure its not just a shift or control and F1 to put the gunsight over (this does happen on other planes..)....they have 'removed' the canopy strut which for the FB should be so, but there is a bit of it.... good skin and well worth persevering with the uploads...:D

It's all there mate, but you have to create your own single missions. Sadly Oleg didn't include the European and desert terrain maps in the quick mission setup.:(
I think someone is currently working on an Operation Jericho mission for the Mossies, but I'd wait until the bug fixes have been released before seriously using the Mossie in combat, it's far too vulnerable to ground fire at present.
I've just downloaded some skins for the Polish Fighting Team (Skalski's Circus), and will now try to create my own mission for them with the desert terrain map.

It's all there mate, but you have to create your own single missions. . Thats the good and bad bits of IL2/FB/PF in one, that you can fly against 16 of your own choosing within minutes, but the missions have to be flown from a to z which can be a little long in the tooth before anything happens unless thay are attacking you.
As to single missions, create yer own stuff etc, I have never gone there, spend enough time on compooters, wading through IL2 for ages would severly pi$$ Mrs Agent off!!:)

Just got an email from the guy at www.flying-legends.net this morning, and sadly he has been forced to make a yearly charge for membership to this site.
At just $10 per year, I'm sure many will agree it's really not too much to ask, especially as he incurred a bill of $1000 per month for bandwidth etc before he moved to a new host!
With il2skins.com now almost certainly gone forever, flying-legends.net is the best site for new skins IMHO and is very well ordered to make it easier to find the aircraft you're after. I downloaded a very nice set of RAAF "Grey Nurse" skins last night, very good for beating up some jap Zero's I find!:D

I've finally tapped into the full mission editor on IL-2. There's lots of good stuff to be had, and it's actually very easy once you know how to do it. I found a great tutorial here (http://www.jumpintojapan.com/fmb-guide.html) which will start you on your way. Here are some screenies from some of my new North Africa missions. It seems to be a common problem, especially to those who are new to IL-2 as they are also having huge problems finding a copy anywhere in the UK.
Of course you need the Aces pack to update the game, so you're pretty screwed without it which makes it crazy to halt the distribution of this vital addon! Try these links mate, but I think you'll be very lucky to find it now. Looks like the profiteers are already there at Amazon, they want £50!

I think I'm right in saying that UBI are planning to release a complete patched version of FB/AEP/FB on one disk. If this is the case, it would be a great move and solve the issue's over the lack AEP disks.

With that spec it should run fine. I ran it on my old system with a P4 3.2GHz CPU, 512mb RAM, and a 128mb NVidia card and it was superb.
If you go into the quick mission builder you'll see the difficulty settings, that will give you some more options.
Another little trick if you want to get rid of the annoying intro movie. go into the Il-2 FB folder you'll find a file called conf. If you double click this file it should open in notepad (or select notepad if asked which prog you want to use), then scroll down a bit to [game] where you'll see and entry called "Intro=". change the 1 to a 0 and that'll stop the intro movie playing at startup.

I would advise against using the "perfect" terrain textures. I'm currently using a P4 with 1Gb RAM and a 128 graphics card, and it's still jerky!
Sure the water looks nice, but how often do you look at it when you're in the middle of a scrap? I have everything else full on, but the terrain detail is set to "excellent" and it runs with no issues!
There are now rumblings regarding the much anticipated Battle of Britain addon. It will be called "Storm of War: Battle of Britain" and will use a totally new game engine, therefore it now won't be an addon for Il-2. :( With the recent release of "Battle of Britain Wings of Victory", it's difficult to see what Oleg Maddox is hoping to achive with this release.
The original Il-2 game engine is around 6 years old now, so it's getting tired. Those into flying in FS9 will already see the difference in the flight models, the IL-2 aircraft don't fly "right" somehow. Despite this though, IL-2 is now a classic, and it's a shame that we won't be flying BoB missions over Southern England.

12th March 2006, 16:16
That is a real shame. Best part of the game has to be the online play. The game is great apart from the sound. Have got the game playing much better. I find most of they the jerks come from the radio chatter. Right better get back to power point.

I believe it's patched to at least 4.03m, but it should be patched to the current 4.04m standard.
It was a great idea to put them all together as Pacific Fighters will very probably be the last of the official IL-2 line that merges into the larger sim. Sadly Oleg Maddox's Battle of Britain sim will not merge into IL2, and will be stand alone.
