As he states, his actions that day probably saved the lives of tens of thousands of his comrades by not having to invade Japan and averted what would most definitely been the most brutal and costly battle of WWII.
Respect.

Brings to a finale.. that triumvirate of USSAF bomber pilots .. Dolittle Morgan and Tibbetts... names from ones childhood, icons discussed in the playground that we knew every little detail about, but if an answer to a question..todays university challenge contestants would meet with a blank stare..:(
Thanks to Mr Tibbets, as many of us would not be here today if the Japanese front had been taken by traditional means.

No different from 25 years ago......when I was at school I, nor any of my mates, would have been able to name them....or virtually any WWII pilot other than Bader. Footie, music & girls took up all the time and interest (not necessarily in that order:D ). I, and I bet many others, only became more interested later on......I suppose it depends if your father was into WWII/aircaft/etc and took you to shows and stuff......as mine wasn't, he didn't.

40 years ago it was..... I did say ones childhood.... it was different then... :D :D :D the various attributes of most airplanes were well discussed as perhaps kids discuss football etc today.. The Airfix kit was the main currency of conversation...
Living in Radlett, then 4 miles outside of Hatfield.. you had to have an interest in planes...:D
The likes of Tibbetts/Doolittle/Gibson/Bader/Tuck/Galland and many more were masters of this genre.. as perhaps your Footballers were 25 years ago..
