View Full Version : Forum Crash & Data Loss (24-11-07)

All,
Apologies for the loss of data due to a database/server issue that I am not sure what happened.
I tried to re-install a back-up of the forum software, but it would not take which was taken from early this morning.
Instead I had a complete server back-up from the 21-11-07 which I have installed, but two days worth of posting and pictures have been lost. Sorry.
I have no idea what happened, but I am now contacting the hosting company to seek their help as the data increase we have been experiancing is on the increase also and currently at 96% of capacity so there is a chance the forum may go offline? (I cannot guarentee either way at present).
I have spoken to several people today and am working on the situation as best as I can.
I do have everyones e-mail address backed-up and if the forum goes offline you will be notified.
Sorry to all concerned, this is teh last thing I want at present.

Appreciate that the forum is , in IT terms, hanging by a thread at the moment. For the benefit of all forumites, I know that CFBC has been burning the 4am oil in an attempt to keep the ship afloat.
Speaking to CFBC today, there are serious IT issues that require specialist input that will take some time to resolve satisfactorily. Issues that even very experienced forumites have difficulty understanding. And all this is having to be done by CFBC whilst still doing the day job. Being up in the small hours to keep the listing ship afloat can't be much fun.
Good luck oh shorted one

Chaps, I have done some 'housekeeping' on the system tonight and freed up over 6Gb of space (being used by SQLdump files) so that we are not under so much pressure regarding storage. Please could you all persevere as though I am an IT Manager my background is not Apache or MySQL etc so I am struggling a bit!! -unsure-
The site does look a bit better though in term of overall health. I think the crash was due to the disk space being so low. I will keep an eye on it.

I thought there was a serious problem early on Saturday evening as i was unable to log on (database error) even though i had managed to do so on a number of occasions earlier in the afternoon.
CFBC, i can only imagine that you must be feeling like wiping your hands and walking away from the whole lot after all the problems (not just here) you have experienced recently but would like to offer you my total moral support in your efforts to keep the forum afloat and running (this also goes to shuttle and whoever else is involved in keeping this forum up to speed).
There is never a day goes by (holidays excluded) that i don't log on to see the latest gossip and postings from what i feel is a great bunch of "nutters" from all corners of the globe.
I wish i could offer the "team" more in the way of help other than mere words but wish you all the best in your efforts to keep this great site operational.
Tremendous loyalty on you behalf, thanks.

Yesterday I had a chat with a few forum members I have known personally now since starting-up the forum and their support for the forum and myself as a friend has and is 110% which is what I would like to thank them for.
They mostly know that 2007 is basically a write off year personally, but losing the experiance of the IT side of the forum was also a big hill for me to climb as you can see and I can only apologise for. But:
A BIG THANK YOU must go to Shuttle for all his help and hopefully resolving the potential problem we faced of the disc storage space being consumed at an alrming rate.
Shuttle, although not his area is expertise reviewed the server and programmes running and found that a back-up of the system was being taken on a continous basis and as such was consuming the stoarage space.
This was via a back-end programme, not front-end so for myself to find it with my experiance would have been a no, no, but Ian knowing a little here and a little there has managed to recover the logs and has managed to reduce the storage own to about 60% which is where we were back in August before I upgraded.
I would like to say a personal thank you to Shuttle and those memebers that I chatted too yesterday for their support (and those that have sent me PM's too), not just a pat on the back from them, but real friendship support which I believe makes this forum what it is.
THANK YOU GUYS and THANK YOU SHUTTLE.

Actually, what really happened was that after CFBC had made a load of excuses, the guy at the head of the table ( the one stroking the white cat...) murmured, 'You have FAILED, CFBC...' and then we all bombarded him with bread rolls......-laugh-
( Only kidding - being a total computer dummy -sad- , I can offer no useful help at all and can only say thanks to those who keep this place running for the enjoyment of us all as an unpaid hobby.... )

Not that I know anything about these things but I use Memeo to back up to an external hard drive. When I copied folders from the old PC to the new PC I didn't have as much disc space left as anticipated. Then I found that a a lot of files that had been re-named or deleted on the old PC appeared as duplicates on the new one.
Anyway, your efforts are much appreciated. I would really miss this place if it disappeared. :)

25th November 2007, 10:23
Yeah.. It uses something called MYSQL DCR and Mike had set-up a daily back-up (using a back-end programme) as they are called.
In essence, back-ups going back to when Mike passed away or around August were found (thanks to Shuttle) and have been removed. This has brought the storage down from 96% to around 60%. (It's a start). -smile
I have a couple of books here on MYSQL and PHP, but each one is about 4-5" thick and with jargon that goes over me!
Me personally, well I am just getting to grips with a programme called Dreamweaver which designs and updates websites and that is hard enough, but MYSQL and PHP is for the boffins. (Sorry Shuttle - -biggrin- )
Not a case of not wanting to learn it, it's a case of having the time too. -sad-

Well done folks, it means a lot, it's fantastic being able to visit a place where you can talk to like minded nutters without people looking at you with the sort of "they're toy planes. Get over it" look on their face. This really is a fantastic place to be, but only made so by the people that run and frequent it. Thanks CFBC and Shuttle, your efforts truly are appreciated. -smile

Av8tor,
I have tried to look at restoring the data but am not confident that I could without there being a risk to the database. Therefore, I suggest we just keep things going as they are. I did a reboot of the site recently which has freed up some disk space so the forum (according to the stats) is looking healthy at present.
