Went to the seaside a few weeks ago went in a shop that had loads of diecast cars made by "Cararama" in the main they were the normal every day cars , but one in the set was the WW2 Willys Jeep , I managed to pick out four that had slightly different markings , they are very well made, they even have rubber tyres , and just 99p, parked in front of my B17 they look great ! shame they don,t make more in the WW2 types

I got one from evilbay some time ago. It looks great beside my Dragon P-51D Millie G. I looked for a German Kubelwagon for my German machines but alas it was not be. :(

Cool! I've never heard of them before. Are they a UK based company? What other 1:72 scale WWII vehicles do they have?

Sadly Cararama don't appear to make any other WWII stuff apart from the Willys Jeep. :(

PJ,
If you can live with a slightly oversized one, Corgi made a Showcase Collection Luftwaffe Kubelwagon some time ago which I think looks acceptable next to the larger aircraft (not so good beside a 109!). Their Showcase RAF vehicles aren't bad either.

Oops, yeah, you're right! I actually have quite a mix...
The Bedford truck and Ambulance at the top of the picture are from the Showcase "Their Finest Hour" set (CS90025). I believe these are still made from Lledo molds though.
The yellow topped fuel truck is actually from a plastic Airfix kit, as is the Control Tower (complete with a guy inside on the phone to HQ!).
The other vehicles are all from various Lledo sets including the ones you mentioned.
The RAF figures are from an airfix set and the Luftwaffe figures are from Preiser. RAF set includes a couple of guys on regulation issue bicycles along with some guys to move your Corgi fuel bowsers and the Luftwaffe set includes the squadron dog!
Additionally, Hasegawa make some great 1:72 kits for modern era stuff:

I collected all the Lledo WW2 stuff a few years back and have em all saved and had displayed before I collected the AA's, but the bottom dropped outta Lledo and they are worthless now (well some are), but thats given me a dam good idea as I have RAF and also USAF vehicles too....
A new lease of life I reckon !!

Exactly! I'm sure there are purists who couldn't live with the scale mismatch but I personally have to study them closely to notice. I keep bugging Corgi to come up with some 1:72 ground vehicles before Dragon beat them to it. They like the idea but they're invested in 1:64 (to match Hotwheels cars) now with their Tactical Strike series. Not too far off I guess, but the real killer is they told me that if they had to do it all over again they'd have picked 1:72. Grrrr...
Oh, and if you're looking for something for you USAAF collection, Johnny Lightning put out some decent little trucks in their Pearl Harbour series:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6933605017
Matchbox also did a diecast 1:72 jeep and trailer as part of their Collectibles Series a while back but they seem to be hard to find now. :(

Looks like you have all the kit I have! :D The Hasegawa ground kit is superb, and really makes the Modern Dragon models come alive, and the Airfix bowsers are really neat! I thought about the showcase Kubelwagon, but I'm really not sure I could live with the difference in scales though.
Hasegawa make a nice 1/72 scale Kubelwagon, so it may be time to buy it as I'm a stickler for accuracy! I noticed the Airfix RAF Groundcrew, anyone know if you can still get the Luftwaffe ground crew set?

Most of the Airfix and Preiser sets show up on thebay from time to time. I prefer the Preiser figures since their harder plastic and don't flex so the paint adheres better. Also, by choosing the right colors you can mix and match forces to a certain degree. Here's a WWII Luftwaffe guy moonlighting for the USAF (try to avert your gaze from Mr.Butt-Crack :) ):

The plastic used on the Airfix figures is a bit horrid to paint on, however if you soak them in detergent for a while before painting, the paint should stick much better. I would recommend using humbrol size 0, or 00 brushes to paint, however for buttons I use a cocktail stick with a very small amount of brass colour paint. Another top tip is to cut off the bases with a sharp knife and replace them with clear thin plasticard, that way you can still change the diorama layout without the hassle of glueing the figures to the base board! ;)
For white metal figures you need to dilute some matt light grey paint with thinners or white spirit. There does seem to always be some flashing on white metal figures, however this can be got rid of with a sharp knife. Brush the figure all over and allow to dry, this way you will see any other blemishes that may need to be corrected. After this you can paint as normal.
Hope this helps ya'all a bit! ;)

NeilD
30th October 2004, 21:29
thanks for that P/J.. one more question... the base that your P51 is sitting on... the bit that looks like concrete hardstanding - is that somethign that you can buy or is it one of your paint effects (this gets more like Changing Rooms everyday :D )...
planejunky
30th October 2004, 21:47
I thought someone may ask that, just call be Laurence, actually please don't! :D
It just a plasticard base, but I scored the segments of concrete using a knife. The top corner is painted brown, then whilst the paint is still wet, sprinkle some grass scenery so it sticks to the wet paint. The rest was painted a concrete colour, and after drying I took a pencil and used a knife to scrape the lead into the base and just rubbed it in using my finger.
I found another idea for creating modern dioramas is to use your PC to create the base. In these Dragon F-15E pics I used MS Word to create the image and simply printed it! Verlinden charge a small fortune for this stuff, you can just creat'em yourself! I also created the "Aircraft Armed" signs using Word.
I find Dragon models are easier to create realistic dioramas as you can open the lids. ;)

I got the Willys jeep too, but I'm always after the civililan cars that the BoB pilots are always using, you guessed it, to go with my Spitfires and Hurricanes! It appears that there was a company doing them, like the MG's but they are rare to get hold of in 1/72nd. I had a dealer looking for me, but no joy so far. Willys Jeep looks ok but they dont do a blue/grey RAF one and they only arrived after the BoB of course. The Airfix crash set and refuelling set are the answer, if you can bear making and painting them, and the Lledo stuff looks far to big, mainly as they dont stick to scale and the BoB set is certainly the wrong date, and each vehicle a different scale - cant win there, but they do look good! :)

Thought it best to continue here as this is a bit more suitible for diorama talk!
Here's another picture, complete with the Italieri Kubelwagon I built though I'm awaiting Luftwaffe figures for this piece. I'm looking into a possible winter scene as the winter of 1944/45 was particularly harsh, and the model is dated at around January 1945.
The background is simply a FS2004 screen shot of the Lower Silesia area which was a bit of an experiment, but didn't turn out to bad really. :) I've taken others including an RAF station, USAAF station, and a winter version of the one seen here.

Thanks for the offer CFBC, the background used in the pic is great when you look at it, but just seems to fall flat on its face when photographed. I think the main issue is lighting, but then of course you have to be careful about shadows, i.e. nice sky background with a big transparent grey mossie wing across it!
I don't normally use backgrounds as they can look a bit naff, and trying to match the foreground to the background is nothing but a pain in the rear! I think I'm just gonna stick with base boards. I'm currently using A5 size base boards to save shelf space, but may use something bigger just for photography. :)

I knew that Martin. ;) But when I looked again you're right a Schwimmwagen would be more appropriate, looks like a shore line! :D ;) Well it was worth a try, trouble is any background simulated or real, is always going to be a problem lighting wise.
Thorpe Abbots is a great place, only a 25 minute drive from here. Sad about the runway but that's progress I suppose, I'm suprised it lasted until '88 not many did.
I grew up (well that's debatable) near Great Ashfield home of the 385th BG "Vans Valiants". A bit of the runway exsists, and the tower's still there but on private land so undoubtedly that will dissapear too in time. :(

Back to your dioramas, there's a really great photo on p41 of Osprey's 'Fw 190 Aces Of The Western Front' showing 'Pips' Priller leaning against the drivers door of a racy-looking BMW 327 ; in the background, a BMW-powered Fw 190A-5...... Now, that would be a  modelling idea !

Well I got and painted the Mastery Miniatures "Luftwaffe on Patrol" figures. It turns out that these are figures supplied to Diverse Images, who make those very nice, but also very expensive, pewter models. The figures are also expensive at £9.50 for three, but they are of superb quality and a dream to paint. :)
These are interesting in that they have a "stalk" mounted to one foot (see pic). This is a good idea because when you have worked out where everything is going, using a 3mm drill bit you can drill out the hole to fit the figure to your display board. This eliminates the need for glue, or clear stands, which can look a bit iffy on grass dioramas.
As the model in dated January 1945, there should be snow. I just learned that plaster of Paris is a good way achieve this and the texture is similar to snow in 1/72 scale. For now though I’ve used a bit of artistic licence and used scatter over brown paint! :D

I'm looking at doing a Desert diorama next with Bf109G Black Six. The only problem I'm finding is that there doesn't seem to be any Desert Luftwaffe figures available. I even looked at the Airfix Afrika Korps set to see if there was anything that I could "convert", but alas no. :( Airwar (see my Mustang dio) also do a Luftwaffe Med set, so that could be North Africa, Sicily, or indeed Italy, I wish they'd narrow it down a bit!

I'm certainly not to Bob's standard, but making a basic "grass" board is really not that hard, honest! ;)
1. Take your base board, paint or spray it earth brown. This needs to be done quickly, so spray paint is better over a larger surface.
2. Add scenic scatter over the wet paint. After a 10 minutes, tip the board to get rid of the access scatter.
3. Let the paint dry for a few hours. I tend to leave it overnight to really make sure it's dry.
4. Take a cloth or something similar and rib the board until you get some bare patches, strips were seldom that neat so it adds some realism.
There you have it, simple really! painting figures, well that's a bit more skilled! :D

Diorama aint that complicated Mr CFBC.. even if its a bit of MDF painted concrete gey with a few felt tip lines in it gives the impression of slabs..
.. dont forget .. less is more....

Wonder if Mrs CFBC will buy me some MDF, grass lookalike and some bushes for Xmas? Maybe and just maybe a fence or pole too? :D
She don't let me use glue though...... :(

If you are going to the NEC you can pick up all of that scenic stuff and other bits and pieces off the choo choo stands for a few bob. Look out for a range of plastic railway building kits called KnightHawk, they do a great Nissen hut in 1/72. I'll try and post a picture.

Planejunky, I'm wondering, where did you get the figures to go with your diorama? by the way it looks very nice. I've been looking for all the stuff to put together a large fighter stand but I'm new to the diorama scene.
Thanks

Here you go then, after a little help from my friends with the photo ... and not really a Diarama I know ... and the photography compared to the other offerings on here  ... but in the back ground you can see the Nissen hut I have been waffling on about.

Mmmm, I like that nissen hut, company called KnightHawk you say? You now just need the Airfix RAF figure set and you'll be good to go.
Sadly the Luftwaffe set is now getting very hard to find, so if anyone sees it, it's advisable to buy it! ;)

Yep, fraid so. The RAF set is still in Airfix boxes, the USAAF set is now in Heller boxes, but the Luftwaffe set is out of production. Even the Ha****ts online and physical list no longer shows the Lufty set in stock. :( I feel this is a bit short sighted of Airfix as it would still be a great seller, especially with the advent of quality diecast models.

Matador Models also make a David Brown tractor (here is a pic of the Elvington example). In 1/72 scale, it would look nice next to a Corgi Lancaster or Wellington

Corgi is going to release 2 diorama scenes this year according to one US website that was at the New York Toy Show. There will eventually be six in the series all of which can be displayed separately or as one continuous scene.
