We DO have C130s filling our skies here in WV though. Charleston is home of the 130th Tactical Air Wing, an Air National Guard unit. They get called off to exotic places on a regular basis. They also enjoy practicing low level stuff over my house from time to time!! LOL

Hello Kiwi Dave,
What's the availability of any/all of the brands like in NZ ?
Kiwi Dave
5th August 2004, 11:28
Hi Horrido!
I live in Invercargill which has a population of only approx 50,000 people, but we have the biggest Corgi retailer in New Zealand. Also sold are Dragon, Franklin Mint (Armour), Minichamps and WarTanks brands.
I only started collecting in November 2003 and I bought the Gulf War Tornado for NZ$145.00 from my retailer which I now know is expensive. I now have 35 Corgi AA's, 3 Dragon Warbirds and 1 WarTanks Iraqi T-62. Most of my models now are bought on eBay either from U.K. or USA as this source is much cheaper than my retailer. I pay anything from GBP9.00 to GBP22.00 P&P or even GBP35.00 for the likes of a Liberator, but even then the final eBay price is usually about half what my retailer charges. If you ever hear of civil war in NZ it is because those who aren't on the internet have found out! :)

Spock, the poll feature only gave me a maximum number of 10 choices. Since Corgi is a UK company, and the majority of folks on this forum will come from the UK, I figured it would be interesting to see the breakdown by UK territory, and by then I only had a few slots left. Rest of Europe was not meant to slight, after all they could have been included in other, but was based on the fact that I didn't see a lot of non-UK based Europeans on the last forum.

Yes, the new museum is very nice: http://www.bongheritagecenter.org/
It's actually at the airport in Superior, Wisconsin, just to the southeast of downtown Duluth, across the river.
And if you come to Minneapolis/St. Paul, don't expect to find Corgi AA models. You have to really dig for them.....sigh.

Dunno. I wonder if it would be possible to do a "pick up" North and South" to appeal to as many members as possible?
I shall investigate and start a thread if it seems a "goer".
Like everything else I guess cost will be a factor ... but what a way to make an entrance! You've done a Dak charter I seem to remember?

To answer your question, yes it's the oil industry and the other question about Lagos, I can think of 192 better Countries to work in, bearing in mind there are only 194 on this little planet.
When I first started work here I thought I might see some interesting aviation wrecks, the only ones I've seen are the Ex Nigerian Airways ones at Lagos Airport. And to anyone who's seen those excellent programs about the Airport, it's all true and more.
Relating to Nigerian Airways, someone told me a story about one of the Captains of an Airbus landing his aircraft in some Country and asking whether they wanted to buy it. Now this could certainly happen, but does anyone know if this is true?

On the up side it is good that the monopoly of Man U / Arsenal has been broken ( all that is needed are another 5-10 insanely rich people and we will have a competitive league again ) but I agree about the way it is being done ( also at least people like Roman and Fayed tried / trying to take near bankrupt clubs ito success in comparison to Glazier ) .Wenge proved at Arsenal you can build a great team without loadsa money . Alas the footballing world is fickle ( apparently its a funny old game as well ) Arsenal / Man U reporting huge drops in sales of shirts etc . , Chelksea's skyrocketing .

I will try to help you Defiant Man to pronounce Youghiogheny. Lets see um.... allright take the CH out of chalk put a Y in place of so you have "Yalk" then will place a "O" in the middle and at the end will put "gain" and ad some eeee`s so here you have it.
Yalk-O-gaineeeee but the rite spelling is Youghiogheny ;). I go canoeing on this river in the summer and on the site of Connellsville if you type in Connellsville in the search colume it will show you some more pictures some of these places I ride my dirtbike/ATV there, alot of fun :).Also on the site there was pictures of the Ohiopyle state park falls this is the Youghiogheny River also but this is up river from me about 1/2 hours drive they do white water rafting up at Ohiopyle on the rough section of this river  . Glad you follow the Pittsgurgh Steelers, I know yuns guys perfer soccer, almost made it to the superbowl last year but no cigar :( , we finished 15-1 on the regular season though pretty darn good best record in the AFC confernce :) .

I live five km from the beach on the 'Sunshine Coast' in Southern Queensland, Australia - about 100 km North of Brisbane, which is of course the capital of Queensland - but I'm sure you knew that anyway :D The climate here is subtropical so it's shorts and a T-shirt weather all year round. The Sunshine Coast region is (sort of) famous for its beaches, Fraser Island (largest sand island in the world apparently), Noosa Heads (snoby tourist area) and Australia Zoo - home of Steve (Crickey it's the Crocodile Hunter) Irwin.

Found out late yesterday that the Queensland Model Hobbies Expo is on this weekend, ends tomorrow at 16:00. I had a look this arvo and it wasn't too bad, to my surprise I found a local diecast club that meets every second month for a swap meet. PM me if you want the details.

Hello Mr CFBC.
Don’t you worry about that I’ll let them know. By the looks of it they are vehicle collectors mainly, apparently there is the odd aircraft collector that rocks up, I guess I'll find out in October.
Sounds like you had a good trip, I’m off to Hong Kong next week, can’t wait to have a look at the new UML shop on Nathan Road.

Thanks CKS1, but if you are referring to the Brisbane Model Diecast Collectors Club, I've been a member for about twenty years. Our next swap meets are 8th October and 3rd December at Morningside (Brisbane) School of Arts Hall, 3.00 pm start.
I usually have a few tables at the Queensland Models Hobbies Expo to sell excess diecast military models and military/aviation books from my collection. But I and a few other private collector/sellers were excluded this year to make room for more club displays, including the Brisbane Diecast Club.
Brisbane would be the best city in Australia to buy earlier diecast such as Dinky. I was also a member of the Sydney Diecast Club that have a swap meet in Granville each month and their prices are usually double Brisbane's.

Hello all
I live in Folkestone Kent England. Right near the channel tunnel ! Good place to live as we have Hawinge BoB museum just up the road.
I work for a generator company and spend a lot of time overseas Commissioning them.
I feel real sorry for that poor guy who lives in Lagos Nigeria. That place is really dangerous. Even the police try to rob you ! Last time I was in Nigeria I was in Aba, about 2 hours from port Harcourt. The sign outside the local hospital reads "it is forbidden to dump corpses out side the hospital" . Some one could not read because there was a dead guy under the sign.
Nigeria makes you feel real good about your own home.

Hi CKS1, Ye Olde Church Hall was packed with sellers, but sadly there were few buyers this month, and they had deep pockets. But luckily I had two good sales near to closing to ensure I made enough to cover the petrol costs :)
It was a warm day, and that old hall can get very stuffy. But no doubt Saturday 3rd December will be an even hotter day in downtown Brisbane. I just hope any pommy customers have their traditional weekly bathe BEFORE they attend the swap...throws grenade, then runs for cover ;)

Lincoln, England and scarred for life by the sound of Vulcans overhead during my formative years. That and the engine testing (and night flying - I assume) when I was trying to sleep. Not forgetting the vibration of everything - ground, walls, windows, etc, when they passed over having just taken off from Scampton (which was about 1 - 2 miles up the road from me).
Where I live now people complain about the planes heading into Stansted - I can't say I notice them. They don't make them like that any more...
I suppose the almost daily free displays by the Red Arrows more recently go some way to compensate.

Btw, we used to be coloured pink on the map but we reckoned that was to gay looking, but now we're not sure which way to go. Red just looks to in your face, or you know, sort of commie looking, so maybe a nice ochre colour would give us a down to earth look without looking to pretentious.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada -- Canada's largest city. Hello smartd, I see you are in Hamilton, just down the road from us. I spent 17 years there until '84. My favourite 3 things about Hamilton:
1. The cycling in the region
2. Denninger's
3. Modeller's Choice
Three things that Toronto will NEVER be able to have!!!
Hi Upkeep, moved here from TO in '90, closer to friends and CWH. After a while I gave up on the commute and found a job in this region.
Have to agree with Modeller's Choice, usually send some time up there each week.

Yeah -- I have a few friends who have done the same -- but most are still doing the GO train commute. They've bought some swell houses (for cheap compared to TO prices!) in the Aberdeen & Dundurn area and another is in Westdale. Mmmmm . . . sweet.
Modeller's Choice is a mecca of sorts. My Brother and I periodically drive in from Toronto to buy. FYI: Their online purchasing and shipping is second to none (FAST and reasonably priced!!!).
Boy, do I miss Denninger's and cycling north of Burlington & Dundas after work though!

Was at Modeller's Choice tonight, bought a couple more planes. Still thinking about the Black Cat @ $80.00.
Have a friend who drives in from London every now and then to stock up at Denninger's.

We live outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico-- that is in the USA-- You might say is is still a bit of the wild west here. High, wide and lonesome, but that is the way we like it. Great country and great weather!

Sounds like the perfect picture of cowboy-country; something Remington would have painted. I love it! I'm envious -- ;)

I was born in what is now the capital of the People's Republic of Cuba: Miami, Florida, USA, and I now reside in the British capital here in the 'colonies', Orlando, Florida, USA!! (there are over 30,000 British who permanently live in Orlando!! :D :cool ).
I did live in Dallas, Texas, USA for 2 years and went to military school for 1 year at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas, USA, about 20 miles from the Mexican border. Ironically, there was a huge airshow held there every year; the Confederate Air Force!! I was able to climb inside the only operational Boeing B-29 Superfortress in the world, 'Fifi'!! :) :D

Been living in Cold Spring, NY, USA for the past seventeen years. It's a lovely small village on the Hudson River, across from our famous West Point Military Academy.
For the railroad buffs out there, I have the Metro North just beyond my backyard which gives me easy access to the Big Apple -- AKA New York City. Which is where I was born and the only other place where I lived.

Born (1934) and raised in East Yorkshire. Moved to Toronto in 1963, then to London(U.K.) 1966. Back to Vancouver, B.C. in 1967 then Long Beach, California in 1968. Transferred to Shannon, Ireland in 1986 and to London in early 1991 and then back to California in late 1991 to retire.
Finally came to my senses in 1994 and moved to a small town in Oregon to get out of the rat race and enjoyed every minute since. The only downside is that I have to mail order all my models as nearest stockest is 180 miles away in Portland and not aware of any other collector in the area.
On the plus side, the town is home to a lot of aviation veterans who meet regularly and welcomed me into their ranks. Between them, they seem to have flown just about everything in the U.S. military inventory since pre-Pearl Harbor days up to the U-2 and Nam era types.

Have read some of your tales and stories in the past and now see how you have managed to acquire those stories.... And at the end of the day, you originate from Yorkshire!

Welcome Drucifer. If you have a question let it fly the experts on here will tell you how many rivets are in your diecast models.;) :D
Jets or Giants fan? had to ask.

Jets or Giants fan? had to ask.Not much of a football fan, but Joe Namath did lived in my friend's building when he first came to New York. Did drive from Montreal to New York in record time to only see Joe hurt his knee again in a pre-season game and was out for the whole year. But overall, I'm not much of a football fan.

Well I've spent most of my years in the old 'Hornchurch Sector, Sector D'.
Growing up in Hornchurch itself and now maturing nicely near Rochford!
Just been trawling thru here (previously dormant thread) & shows how dull it is on Tele' tonight:D !!!!!!!!!
Thunder, your entry def' raised a smile here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thinking of Rochford always reminds me (as a kid) of those TWO old Short-Belfasts that had been "put out to grass" next to the railway lines & remained there thru the '70's
(...the ol' clapped-out ones, not Heavylift's G-BEPS & Co.)
Staple-diet, seeing them on a railway trip to Sarfend Vic'
Such an eternal shame about the ol' Sarfend Aircraft museum (died '82/'83)

Totally agree, such ashame as it had some interesting types if I remember, the old Beverley survived a bit longer after closure, but was finally scrapped for the safety of the local vandals, though I believe the cockpit still survives somewhere.

Ah, yes. The Beverly. What a British classic. Someone just has to do that up in diecast.

I believe there is another fellow here who goes by the alias 'DiveMikeDive'. He says he is in Shanghai.
Then, off course there is William from HM. ;):D

No one will take any notice of this post.
I was not in any branch of the armed forces but I did work for the government in a roundabout way.
My father was in the army and travelled the world. Ok this resulted in me living in Malaya, Singapore, Nigeria, Hong Kong and Germany. We also visited the USA and Canada.
Although I have worn spectacles for years and used to be fit, tough and tall, I have now shrunk alarmingly :D
I was sort of inteligent and had a good nose for things that were not quite right.
No I didnt frequent universities appart from giving the odd lecture at certain venues.
It's history so dont ask
PS I had connections with legal and military authorities.
Whats your line? :D

Originally from Wiltshire, I am an Electrician by trade. I have been working in the Oil drilling business for the last 16 years. I moved permanently to Latvia in 2005 (chasing women of course, my wife wasn't best pleased and divorced me shortly after).
Mainly worked offshore on a 28/28 rotation in the UK, Holland, Azerbaijan and Egypt. Went onshore as a residential Maintenance Manager 2 years ago, lived in Bahrain and worked in Saudi for 18 months. Moved to Moscow in January.
I have not been in the UK for 2 1/2 years now, I can't see me ever moving back to the UK but I do miss airshows, cheap delivery on diecast and salad cream though!

Couldn't see anywhere else for this to go........
BIG exercise on the Plain - Lynx, Puma, Chinook and Apache aplenty - patio / front doors open just in case of a too low fly-past. Sobering to think these guys will be facing the fuzzy-wuzzy's in East all too soon. When will the politicians learn about Afganistan - couldn't cure it in the 1800's, won't cure it now.............:(
