OK - we've got 'what yer bought...?' which has been a good thread. What about a 'nearly - but not quite' thread ?
Those models that you pick up :) ...reach for the plastic :) :) .....look at the box with a frown :( ......put the box back down  , pocket the plastic.....and think, 'Nah - let's wait 'til it's under a t*nn*r' ?
That's just what I did today with the new 'Tunis' Fw 190. Looks really nice, desert colour scheme looks good. But basically, I collect NW Europe theatre aircraft - so I'll wait until this one 'does a Dickfeld' ;)

3rd November 2004, 19:05
I did pick up the Tunis FW190 on Sunday as well as French Suez corsair and D-Day Mosquito. Dithered over the German Navy Tornado, convinced myself price will drop so wait a while. Guaranteed now never to see another one!
Worst thing I ever did in the past was pick up a 'Donald Duck' and put it back again after deciding I already had enough Spitfires. ( Now know you can never have enough Spitfires).

My worst one was picking up a "Grim Reaper" Mosquito at £30 when new, then putting it back becuse I was a little short of cash. Oh dear. Don't think I'll be getting one now!

NeilD - Monarch is ltd to 2900, Cunard to 1300. Which will be easier to get?
Essential to have a list of how many ltd were done of each model. Although I suspect dealers occasionly play a waiting game? Raf camo Chinook (5400) and yellow sea king (4100) for example and yet Gulf war Bucc (3900) getting dumped at £6.50.
Still agree Monarch looks the biz though :)

Was at an airshow a while back and on the CHC stall they had the BOAC Mosquito. I think at the time it was going for around £40. I so nearly bought it but decided i had already spent enough. If only i had known then what i know now i would have took all his available stock :D .

Got the Me109 in desert camoflage a couple of years back for twenty five dumpers. Flogged it for thirty quid and giggled all the way to the Officer's Mess.

Nearly bought a CC Liberator off evilBay yesterday that were priced very reasonably. Will hold out for a CC Wellington now Albert has given us the nod that there will be one.

Have to say it isn't one I'm raving about either.
I came within a gnat's of buying an Armour 1/48 N.F. Hurricane. Black undersides, grey / green upper surfaces and external tanks. I saw that you had bid Mr CFBC, but it looked like you had feigned interest... What is french connection annoying is that I was watching that for a good hour before.. fended off Mrs Agents... you on that bl*ody machine..!! I put up a private question an hour before the end of the sale as it mentions 46 models and the photograph shows 6... hang on are they in boxes.. been on display.. if so do you smoke.. and got back that it was for 46 and they were all boxed..
Win the deal and now he states hes sold 7 of them... and like you can guess which seven... :p so he asks me what am I going to do about it....
!*!"#@#!! thats what I shall do...
In reality not a lot it aint getting worth getting worked up over, it a french connection long way to go to be jacked off by said individual.. pity as I have a client I really should see and was looking forward to the Revenue contributing towards my outing...

Naw I typed as is... the last 22 out of 29 models have come from the USA*.. so its dollars.. you retailing chappies should be the ones crying foul... some manufacturers who want a level playing field do accomodate this...problem is they would just move the model to the dollar equivalent.. so then they lose Stateside.. at the moment diecasts are not exactly the easiest things to shift and with the coming recession..

Yes Agent... I had to seriously have a think about acquiring one, BUT with the forthcoming year I have to keep my hands in my pockets and notes in my wallet.

I spent 100 notes on 5 aircraft and could've spent double that i think. I also love the Corgi 1:50 tanks aswell, people slag them off, but i reckon they look great. Haven't paid more than £15 for any of their limited stuff and i reckon that's a damn fine price for them.

Saw the Beurling Spit in MZ today and it is - to my eye - really nice, and a change from better-known Spitfire schemes.
But....just couldn't quite bring myself to pay full RRP, having done that before this year only to see the model £8 cheaper in two weeks' time.
Psychology time - if the Corgi Club 10% had still applied, I'd have bought it without hesitation

A radome is just a radar dome; a place where the radar is kept, best place on a Tonka, or any fighter for that matter, is the nose. There's a much more sophisticated radar on the Sentry, hence the need for that huge dome.

To be specific the Sentry's look-down radar cover is called a rotodome because the whole thing rotates (at about 6 rpm). Whereas radomes on the front of aircraft don't move as a rule, except for servicing etc, but the radar inside often does of course.

Sometimes i think these sellers state the model is mint in box when it really is not. They then send it wrapped in only sodding brown paper so they can then claim it was mint when they posted it and must have been damaged because of abuse by Post Office handling
I mean, what serious person thinks that an item like this can survive postage wrapped in nothing but paper.
Just put it in a cardboard box picked up from anywhere and pack it out with old newspapers.
Cheap and cost effective but at least it offers some protection to model and box.
Craig
22nd March 2006, 01:18
You have a point Eismeer, it doesn't seem feasable for a box to take that kind of abuse and survive. I've been lucky really, only ever had two models delivered through the post, one was bought from a Forum member so it wasn't suprising that it was extremely well packed and arrived in immaculate condition, the other was from Evilbay but was also wrapped in bubble wrap and then put in a cardboard box, so also arrived mint. .. interesting.. dual pricing £39.99 at Holborn..
Anyway sloped off and popped into M/Z Holborn this morning.. the amount of AA seems to have been cut well back from my last time I was up there.
Very little really.. in fact the usual supects, Wellies £10 dearer than Bluewater.. Sentimental Journey the best bargain of the lot at £40.. first thing on looking at it, that hit me, was the Cert..
The massive Legends and Showcase display of a couple of months ago was gone and replaced by the entire Batman collection which the pooch was promoting heavily in the States a year or so ago.. in fact there was really not a lot out on the shelves, which brings me on to the cabinets.. (ModelZone at Hoborn tend to display the RRP stuff in some eye level cabinets).. what a collection of models ....missing bits, falling off stands.. not doing themselves any favours there.. a bit of TLC could improve the sales there..
Solitary Park Hurricane .. no piles of boxes, so they have either sold them all, or now buying as few as possible, waiting for the dumpsters.. all in all quite disappointing really..

Unlike Holborn they had loads on display and some good deals on Chinnys, RB Martins, B-25's, Duxford Phantom, 1/32 109, Malta Wellys (£30 - no sticker on boxes).......loads of Legends at RRP and an excellent display right at the back with 4-5 of Meteors, Sabres, Jags, P-40's and others such as Connies, Nimrod, RAF B25, 262s, Sea Kings, latest Phantom.....really nice display, but all were RRP.

Wellingborough boot sale today. Think Neighbob got there before me.!
A seller had a pretty bashed and glued Black Hunter, camo Hunter and Airtours comet, couple of quid, but too far gone to be worth buying. Got talking, as you do. Turns out he sold some boxed corgis earlier (alleged minty)
Lightning, Lancaster and others. Apparently by a keen buyer.:(

Could really kick meself today.Missed out on a genuine WW2 Battle of Britain pilots Irvine sheepskin. The jacket had good provinance, the seller is a very well known dealer who also has the pilots helmet, medal group and letter from his sister whom he bought them from in the '70s.The pilot was shot down and killed in the Battle.
The jacket went for £395 with only one bid. When you consider that a modern repro. Irvine would cost nearly as much, I recon that was a once in a lifetime opportunity:(
I was going to bid but got home too late. Then again, if I had won it there would have been no diecasts for quite a long time.
Looks quite nice and this is the only one of the set i was ever interested in. Box art is nice and 4 seperate boxes are a much nicer idea than one large box IMHO.
BUT just can't see anything particularly special about it to want to own one at £25 (ish) Much prefere the Mcknight and MOM hurri's and think this one would struggle to claim a decent space in my cabinet :D

It does require willpower to avoid snapping up 'bargains' when you first see them... wow, 50% off etc,....but a strange feeling of satisfaction is experienced having managed to walk away safe in the knowledge that the hard earned will be put to use on and valuable space reserved for the goodies undoubtedly awaiting later in the season;)

It somehow just doesn't look right and I'm sure it should have a trop filter. If they had gone for the Warburton model instead I might just have been swayed because of the man involved.
Looked at the 109 which is not too bad but again, no thanks.
Looked at the four different Gladiators. I had previously thought I would get one at full price if I could be sure of getting one of the good ones without any QC probs. I dearly want to love the Glad but in the metal they just don't have the appeal. Might be tempted if I find a decent one in the BINs sometime.
A few sale models left, JAK spits and black Mossies. For any one interested they did have a couple of the 500 run Sabres left.

Be interesting to know how many Spit/109 sales witty have missed on due to some of these easily corrected errors?

Were these in the sale or regular price?

They were regular price. The Spitfire mould looked really nice which is what made the colour question all the more annoying. I don't care that I wasn't there - it just looks plain wrong.
What is it with Johnnie Johnson ?
Must be a kind of die-cast jinx aircraft - Witty do it with a host of errors, Corgi do it and produce arguably one of their most disappointing models, and now GA drop the ball having come so close. Weird.

Yeah what is the differnce BF/ME ?
Don't know looked in me book but it doesn't tell you, my guess is "Me" is just short of Messerschmitt (the manufacturers) and the Bf is the type of plane, and 109 is the ID number and the letter is the variant presumably like e=emil, but I could be completely wrong :o

[QUOTE=scott;170432]Yeah what is the differnce BF/ME ?[/QUOTE
Bayerische Flugzeug Werke (Bf) became Messerchmitt AG (Me) in 1938. I think that those types designed up to 1938 retained the Bf designation (eg Bf109, Bf110) and those that came after (eg Me210/410/262) became Me.

I left my spot at the front before the end of the show to head back to the car. I intended to pop back to the ARD stand and possibly pick up the new G-FURY Sea Fury. Do you think I could find it again - or any of the other model stalls I visited in the morning? Eventually I gave up and headed for home. Waddington, two days at DX and a visit to MZ Meadow Hell on the way home and very little that tempted me. I did buy a Leg End Tiffie but I don't why, maybe just a a token effort or because it's not as yellow as the Beaumont version.
Tempted by the Swordfish prints on the RNHF stall which has been mentioned earlier (Red2?) particularly one signed by four survivors of the Channel Dash episode but a bit pricey for me especially when the cost of framing is added. Also tempted by a couple of bits of Swordfish but Mrs DCR might not be too keen.
Very tempted by a Swordfish print (£110) at Waddington again signed by veterans. Rejected for the same reason as above but now regretting it.
I did buy Richard Morris' biography of Cheshire, The Attack On Taranto - Blueprint For Pearl Harbour" by Thomas Lowry and John Wellham. Also had Touch And Go waiting for me when I arrived home.

Hi everyone,
Finally received 2 Phantoms I had been waiting for as well as the Orange Lion F16 from GA.
The Phantoms are HA 1919 Marines Death Angels F-4J and the first RF-4E HA 1950 ARG JASDF Shark Mouth.
The F16 is awesome and the paint is flawless. The markings under the canopy on the sides of the aircraft are so lifelike and real. I don't know how they made them so small. The rudder and ailerons move nicely and gaps are tight.
The Death Angels F-4J I wasn't sure I would like it with that bright coloured nose but it looks great. The red nose is a bit deeper red and goes well with the white stars. Overall the model looks great and looks mean loaded up with armaments.
The Japanese RF4E is brilliant. The new nose section with the added cameras look awesome and very realistic. The shark mouth is subdued and doesn't look out of place.
Both F4's are a worthy addition to anyones collection.

There were offers already in on both from one buyer, but they were so high I suspected it was a setup... Or the buyer really wants the models of course.

We have been campaigning for one of those for years.... one day.... but until now we have to make do with a 1/400 one.. :D and yep size IS everything...:D
maybe it was 1/400   its all the same to me [i.e. too titchy for von hitchy ;) ]
there was a nice 70s BA 707 which was 1/500 [I think  ]
I can't help being tempted by by 70s/80s BEA/BOAC/BA schemes but always jib it at the point of removing credit card from wallet ;)

Had a look at another Bob Foster Hurri in my local model shop yesterday.
The good news, paint finish was excellent, engine cover fit was the best I've seen with this particular version. BUT the codes on the RHS were again printed at an angle (like the examples I saw in MZ a few weeks ago), and the prop wasn't great, both in terms of droopiness, and the yellow on the tips. That wasn't the dealbreaker, as I think I could have sorted the prop, but the fact that the shop was asking nearly a fiver more for this than they are for the Kain, was.:(
I'll get a good 'n, for a good price eventually...

I think you will find that the aplication of the codes on the port side is wonky on the majority if not all of these. I rate mine as a "good un" but whereas the prop droop issue, yellow prop tips and engine cover fit tend to vary from good to poor every Bob Foster Hurri I have seen (must be over 20) all have squashed up carburettor air scoops and poorly applied codes on the port side. I know the age of the mold keeps getting blamed but the issues relating to paint and codes are certainly down to poor QC. Still its well worth getting if you can pick up a good one. The colour scheme on mine looks spot on and provided its displayed on the starboard side it looks a treat.
As an aside if you look at pictures of the real one the port side codes do tend to slope down more than the norm but even allowing for this the Corgi version is certainly still over cooked!

Went into M/Z Holborn yesterday to look at the Skyraiders....:o ....I really don't 'do' Naval aircraft so the camo Vietnam one it had to be.
....but lo! ...that's obviously the one with the dreaded foggy canopy ( the one on display would've taxied into a Routemaster Bus at the other end of the cabinet without the pilot seeing it..... )
Asked the staff to check and they were all the same, so.......
........no purchase. :(
