Bad or good weekend depending how you look on it! I bought Gentleman Jim, Three Corsairs, Spitfire (Malan), White Stuka, all at Woodchurch air show which I have to say was excellent. Mind you the Corsairs were for youngster who has an absolute fascination with it absolutely made his day when he saw it flying.

A Mossie night fighter landed in my emporium last weekend. Two questions:-
1. Does it want the optional radiator flaps putting on?
2. Will they bring a N/F Mossie out in 1/32?

You could do worse Lofts .. I like it .. the sand is nicely broken up by the mottled dunkelgrun and the undersurfaces by extensive white theatre markings. It also has two extra 500 [?] kg. bombs supplied for fitting externally just forward of the bomb bay. These are painted yellow, which seems a bit strange, but I'm sure if Uncle Albert had anything to do with it will be "right".
My only minor critisism would be that the lower interior cockpit floor has been left blue, as per the adjacent under belly. Would have been better if it could have been an interior green.
As I say though ... a nice model. I'm looking forward to the Eastern Front one.

I've just bought the Legends Harrier from my retailer. It had the wrong price sticker on it and for the last few weeks I've been moving it to the back of the pile. Today when I went in the retailer was not there, just a girl behind the counter, so it's mine now!
I guess this is a case of buying something because it's cheap[er], but did I really want it anyway? Not sure if I'm the cleaver one, because I've got the model or my retailer is because he has my money.

There may be some truth to this. A couple of weeks ago when I first saw the wrong price sticker I went in the next day to buy it and I couldn't find it. Perhaps some other mug bought it and yes he may have put the sticker on another one to get rid of them. The retailers might be having a wager with one another to see who can flog off the most ugly Harriers!

As to the ugly Harrier I'm sure it was brought up on the previous forum and Albert Ross confirmed that the camoflage and gloss were correct fot the time period that is depicted.

Think its down to where you are, as to what was/is short.. At times the AA one was hard to get, but then I picked up one for £5... The Lufthansa.. almost disapeared then some national chain of toyshops had a load of them at 9.99... The RAF T/C and BEA ones have always commanded a premium whereas the Air France Dak was loose change for a while.. but one by one you can knock em off.... Think if anything the later ones.. like the USAF and SAA ones will be hard to get..

Just bought a 1:72 Memphis Belle from the Bay with constant prompting from the missus. Could it be that she is becoming a convert? Firstly a couple of weeks ago at Hendon she tells me to buy the 1:72 Lanc when I'm umming and arring about the price, then she buys a print of a Lanc and I have to hang it in the front room for her, then she almost commands me to get a Memphis Belle. Does anyone know if any company makes diecast stringbags, especially Tiger Moths, in 1:72? I think she would definitely get hooked on the collecting lark then!!

Razz

1. To steal or obtain (often by less than honest means)- 'I'm off to razz some Corgi Zeros'
2. To seek light refreshment of an evening with a group of friends- frequently involving alcohol and ending up somewhere strange with a new and unexpected partner  :o :)

Possibly naval in origin

Hope this helps

Similar to 'going on a bender' (phrase no longer popular in the UK) :D

I visited Malta a couple of years ago and paid a visit to the Museum at Takali. There were more aircraft in the museum than I expected (the Hurricane recovered from the sea, Spitfire, Sea Hawk, Fiat G91, DC3, Flying Flea replica etc + an Aviation Archive Britannia !!!). The Museum was interesting and would recommend a visit by anyone going to Malta. Its also amazing that there were quite a few airfields and landing grounds on such a small island.

A lot of the published colour pictures taken at Takali show Medina in the background, which seems to have changed very little.

Hello Daedalus
Lastest news that the museum acquired a Swordfish from Canada for their collection.

Plans are that they have most of the exhibits outside, that is when they manage to rebuilt a RAf Hangar (they have to dismantle it first from Hal-Far airfield) and put it in Ta Kali. The Hurricane is nearly finished and should also make a taxi run next year for the WW2 anniversary.

BOAC Lancastrian : £10 (don't like it, but in that area of picking up the last few 1:144 scales that I need to complete the set!)
Confederate AF B29/P51/P47 : £17

Now that I have most of the 1:144 scale stuff I've started to dip a toe in the 1:72 scale, but only stuff I can buy for under a tenner, although I'm on a slippery slope here I guess !

Woudnt be too hopeful, from your posts, Mr raff, its would appear that you have most of the models that were there at Huntingdon.. and they were not that much cheaper.. Mossies TT were still £25.. Latest one £20.. Had to really hunt to find the fighters at a tenner, but no Hurricanes at that price.. only American stuff... However if you are still after a Liberator or two, you would not be disapointed.. (although I would state that owing to the size of the boxes and the number of airshows that some of the exibits must have been to, some of the dealer/trader stock is looking very tatty...)

raff
20th September 2004, 14:41
Yup.
I can understand that it must be frustrating for dealers to have to keep putting the same boxes back in the van time after time. After a while it must be tempting to forget about TLC and just sling 'em in the back and move on. Eventually it shows.

Liberators? After reading some of reviews on here I'm thinking about a PPMama, but apart from her I'm well and truly "liberated", ... and even she can wait until the price loses some of it's "new release" sheen.

Main reason I'm going is to pick up my Russian Heinkels and another D-day Hurricane from my "pusher" and then I'll see what I can find after that.

No chance you can get along?

I was also surprised at the low prices, especially for the lancaster and B17.
Actually it was the stores distributer that was clearing them out.
Usually I have to import them, so it was great to buy them locally without the hassle of postage, currency exchange and customs.
Unfortunately, I have spent my budget and will have to think of some clever excuse to get some cash for the new releases.

Well after months of searching I found a Cunard Britannia in a shop in Edinburgh and at £35 I just had to have it (sorry Agent).

Also picked up a Rough Diamonds Hunter for a tenner at a local swap meet.

Also, there still seems to be some serious dumping of Star Jets 1:500 civies on the Bay, particularly by German sellers. Picked up 14 in the last week and have paid less than £4 for each of them. Picked up a Varig MD11 for Euro 1.99 !! Might have to pack em all up again though, if we are getting some more Corgi civies next year.

I would add the BOAC 707 and Capital Viscount to the list. Never see either of these on the Bay. Peplow Hurricane

So far the Heinkel is my favorite of the 3, in fact it looks as if it will be my favorite Heinkel.

raff
13th October 2004, 11:34
Told ya!

Anyway, the thoughts of raff on the subject Airfix v Diecast:

Airfix [or other] plastic kits...
Pluses:
More detail, which can be further enhanced with a bit of imaginative surgery to the point where on photographs they can be difficult to tell apart from the real thing.
With the decals now available they can be given a whole range of different identities.
They can be made to look more realistic by being weathered to taste. [I know you could try these last two on AAs but I don't know how succesful that might be and in any case ... they're die-cast models ... IMHO that's what they should remain.]
Downside:
Time consuming ... [which I for one seem to have less and less of].
Fragile. The present Mrs. raff still has nightmares from the days when I was making them about trying to move them, or keeping a constant eye on the cat in case it went anywhere near. Attempts at dusting were strictly forbidden. [They are fragile. A chap I know lent a collection of superbly modelled a/c to a well known museum as part of a temporary exhibition. What he got back looked like the contents of a scrap box ... nearly broke his heart.]
Once made are virtually worthless ... except to the modeller.
Die cast.
Pluses: Despite what some of the posts on here would lead you to believe, they are a better representation than the average modeller can achieve, especially with "civils" [have you ever tried to get a seamless, pristine top on a fuselage cabin?]
They are more robust, even when allowing for the tendency of bits with too generous manufacturing tolerances to fall off.
They would appear to appreciate in value [well, some.]
Downside.
Compared to plastic lacking in detail, although this may improve if they are keeping an eye on what Dragon are doing. [How many more times Corgi...... FLAPS!!! ... choice of ordnance etc.]
Relatively expensive to collect.
Limited range. I've worked out that at the present rate of new releases I'm goin to be 92 before Corgi catch up with Airfix!

Just a few random thoughts. Perhaps I should have started another thread ... please feel free to kick hell out of them. [as if any invitation was necessary! :D ]

Plastic

Further plusses

Sense of acheivement when completing a model
Hobby time up in the 'workshop' away from other interferences..
Someone somewhere makes a kit of it....

Downsides

Seeing the likes of Bob the Yanks postings and realising just how far or not so far you are progressing with your modelmaking..
The other interferences nagging you as to where you are, what are you doing.. dont leave yer paint brushes there... etc etc etc...
Polish vacu-forms..

Diecasts

Plusses

Instant purchase and display
Spare parts - Corgi - well done...

Downside

Instant purchase - then what..? Loft...? May become an issue with others as to cost and why..?..
Cant change/modify them - further detail etc for fear that it one day might be valuable..
Must be mint, should they be considered an investment when it comes to potfolio planning.. so its keep em 100% and the boxes too...

May add to this later..

Apart from those models I have also seen an Angel of Deliverance, VC-137C, Tu4, Zero/Corsair diorama, USMC Harrier. Not sure if there were many civil types since I don't do the civils other than the BOAC Sunderland and technically the A&AEE Britannia. Its very hit and miss with them as they just dump models in the guys gadgets section or kids toys (u have to be VERY thorough in the search) and the boxes can get beat to hell (the Diamond Lil box is a mess around the corners and there are rips at the opening flaps on the side). I can only suggest checking as often as humanly possible and you just might get lucky. When I was there on Fridays there were 2 Diamond Lils and a Tu4. Most of the ones in the Belfast area seem to be equipped with a TU4 and a Spectre, the Diamond Lil was a new one on me, so I will renew my watch on the stores as they have maybe decided to stock more types.

Im off to Donnington Sunday so this looks very likely!...however, there isn't anything im realy looking for at the moment. i picked up both the TFC Corsair and the Tank Buster Hurricane, they weren't on my want list but got bored one evening and well ebay it was!!!!

Well my 100th AA model has landed safely....

F-51D 'James Glessner'

Boring you might cry!

Well this one has never been on my list, although i love Mustangs (it avoids my one of each policy!) i see this one for 'two fivers' and i thought " oh go on then"

When i got into the car to have a sneek look i noticed bombs and rockets under the wings!! Curious as i had never clocked this before, when i got home i checked out 'The' webs best AA web site (courtesy of Tricatus! ) In short none of the Box art or catalogue pictures show's the 'payload' How mad is that! I'm pretty sure had i have know this when the model was launched i would have coughed up a lot more than i eventually paid. By the way it is an excellent model and is sitting nicely in my 'post war' selection of piston engined fighters and the Canadian Rescue Lanc! :)

Very tempted by the Big Mossie at £80! Had the cash ready in my hand

Costal command B17 and Lib at £39.00 each... i pondered and pondered and pondered...

Dambuster Lanc at £45.00 couldn't tempt me either!!

Good show though and very please with my 'two fivers' Mustang!

p.s. can someone give me the number for Nona at Corgi Spares! One of the Undercarrige legs is bent! :( Heavy landing me thinks!!!!

I bought Revell's F-14 Tomcat which is actually pretty good if you ignore the lousy stand and that it's only gear down.
I am surprised that Revell Germany would have such a poorly designed stand.
Along with Dragon they use those cheap soft metal screws that are very hard to remove.
I also bought Corgi's new French Corsair which is probably one of their best from that series.

Bought the 2nd Patches B-17. IMHO the best "Fort" yet ... not least because the olive drab looks spot on [honest Agent!] with the "patches" and shark toothed turret make it a much more interesting model.
Also picked up the new SEAC Liberator and again IMHO, it really is a good looking model. The dark green upper surfaces and discreet RAF markings really work well. I can probably be accused of panic buying this one so soon ... but as there were only 1200 made didn't want to take the chance!

Anybody got any of the jets? I've seen the initial batch of props and toyed with getting them as quite cheap.

That is about the only place you will find anything, if you think Corgi's marketing ability is poor, Matchboxes is non-existent, they don't even answer mail about the planes (happy to market Hotwheels like there is no tomorrow - strange).

Jets are great, I am waiting for last 2 to arrive (camo) F100D + (wasted livery) F104. Ones I have are very good, the F86, F104 and F100D are great (even come with spare set of nose probes) MiG 15 is a bit "overdetailed" in the rivet department, but who else does one for such great prices?

No undercart is a spurious reason for denouncing them, many people display some or all of their Corgis with gear up - one could moan that Corgi cost more for wheels that are not needed, to be as silly as the Matchbox detractors. Where else can you get two P38s?

Newer models are very light - not much (any?) metal on them - early ones were all metal, still diecast though, just not metal - so no lies on the box!

Have also had very nice email from Cyber Robbery - it looks like our complaints have been heeded (Corgi take note) They have told me my Graf is on the way and my second order is being packed, which is a lot better than they used to be.

Horrido!

Model Power F15 in 1:150. I just wish they would do something with their cockpits. They are the main downfall of their planes in my view, aswell as their wildly varied Corgi Showcase style scales.

Maybe if I could get the canopy off and paint the inside of it black it could work.

I hope their soon to be released Catalina and B-26 Marauders in !:150 are ok, especially the Catalinas rear blisters.

The prices are certainly starting to creep, The Helmut Wick 109E recently went for nearly 70 quid.

Well I'm sad to report that I broke my "one of a type" rule and got the StG1 Desert Stuka for my desert collection! It's a nice model but lacks the extra detail of my StG 2 Battle of Britain version, i.e. only one bomb, and no sirens on the undercarriage legs, (all authentic I presume Martin, as you are the forum Luftwaffe experten! ;) ). Just waiting for the sharkmouth Kittyhawk now, and that'll be the desert collection complete.

With nothing taking my fancy at the moment and waiting for my CHC Mossie, out of sheer boredom i have aquired a Royal Netherlands Airforce F16 with NATO 50TH Anniversary tail art!! Oh did i mention that it was a revell die-cast :o

Although modern jets are not really my thing i don't have an F16 and i fancied a Dutch/Belgian example, although the model has plenty of plastic and a fixed undercarriage it is a very nice model. and at £15.00 good value!

I wonder if Revell are going to release any more diecast subjects?

There is no way I'd call myself an experte, p/j - just someone with 'way too many books !

Yes, the Stuka's sirens ( so notorious in the 1940 Blitzkrieg campaigns ), started to disappear during the BofB and very likely wouldn't have lasted five minutes in the Desert due to the sandy conditions. Very few siren-equipped 87s on the Eastern Front too, but photos do show some 'screaming Stukas' in use there until 1942/3......

I read the review in "a well known aviation monthly" and learned it's the same with the Corgi Liberator. I always thought it was a bit daft having plastic undercarriage anyway, Armour have always had metal undercarriage legs, my B-25D Mitchell stands rock solid, but I don't think plastic legs would last long with that one! :D

Sorry to read of your disappointment but unless prices perk up a little you will find less and less AA dealers at the smaller fairs. Even the larger better attended fairs have a dwindling selection of bargain AA's to offer.

Well said Spock1 and quite agree..... The first steps by Corgi USA are upon us... Are we going to see the likes of Corgi UK do the same and if so, thats bad news for the collector (especially at our UK RRP's) and the retailer/trader...... :(

ForkTailedDevil
22nd November 2004, 19:02
I'd say runs of 1500-2000 would probably be reasonable and if Corgi hold their RRPs at £50 and below, I would say that they may be able to shift most of their stock at retail due to relative rarity which causes a need for collectors to get them immeadiately. Depending on the models size/importance I'd probably pay up to fifty pound for it (in the case of a 144 scale model) new but I have paid a lot more than that second hand.

I see the 1/32nd ME109 on the USA Corgi Site at around £50-£60 and I would buy that with no problems and likewise for the new releases being issued over in the USA, but Corgi UK have not grasped the concept as yet and as such with these runs also... If I knew that they were not going to be dumped, then yes like you I would pay slightly more... (1/72nd bomber - £55-£60 which is what they are in the USA, smaller 1/72nd around £20-£30 depending on the run).....

Yes, I know that others on the Forum will say - Ohherr.. Dumpsters, BUT I personally, possibly like you are happy to pay that and so be it... I am sure many others will be also IF ONLY Corgi would sort out their pricing RRPS to fall inline.....

Thats my opinion thats all and I am sure that Mr whoever is gonna come along and blow-it outta the water!! :)

I have three commissioned models on order because I know that if I don't get them now I will miss out. (I definitely won't pay the inflated prices that some of the commissioned models fetch on EBay or some model fair stalls.)

I think that Corgi and the consumers have to meet each other half way with the following compromises

1.Corgi needs to drop rrp to around a £50 price mark for models the size of a 1:144 B52 and dropping relative to size or complexity

2.Reduce the numbers produced of each paint scheme. 1500-2000 is more than enough to cover all us collectors.

3.Collectors need to realise that if they don't buy the planes at rrp, rather than in dump bins, Corgi are going to stop producing the detailed models we want because it is no longer sufficiently profitable to bother.

4.Corgi need to improve market research so they don't produce models no-one wants thus saving them money and us from having to do with models we aren't that impressed with. Ask us what we want please!! Put a poll on your website of 10 schemes or new moulds you think are good and we will vote for the schemes or idea we like most. You then produce the most popular couple.Simple. Democracy wins and we don't bug Albert for six months or do our heads in guessing whats coming. We can sit and salivate about whats coming and fighting over who can get their pre-orders in fast enough.

5.Corgi get a little more imaginative with the countries and schemes on offer.I just looked on Tricatus's site and counted about 10 green camo Spitfires! I need two or three that colour at most. I also want a bit of variety in my countries. See my "Foreign Air Forces" thread for the flags that some of Corgis current models flew under.

Ordered another kit last night for the missus. A Dragon Rapide 1:72, I needed to order some paints and stuff but the minimum order was a tenner so had to bump it up somehow. I suppose I'll have to stop putting off doing the Tiger Moth now and crack on with it!! :D

'Rozzie Geth' is OK for a Leg End - but I'm a little dubious about the shiny finish. It's a bargain for that price, though.

Hahn is still Leg # 1, IMHO.....

Not much in evidence, new mossie 32nd looked better than 1st one. Prices overall a bit higher than usual.
Only bought a cheap shop soiled Corgi WWII buildings set as a spare to make up. other than that a little N scale jeep in white metal and a couple of N scale figures , near to 1/144th for planes.
Intend scanning in buildings set and enlarging on card to 1/72nd (as suggested a while ago) I suppose could go to 1/32??
See y'all at NEC next week.

No beating required - The dealer had boxes of them. Also had Libs at an average of £27 and B52s in the teens of pounds. I was tempted by an ozzie Seaking at £6.50 but can't afford to start collecting helo's as well as everthig else.

Aussie Sea King at £6.50 - you should have bought it....could have re-sold it straight away on ebay & would have made a profit, even if only a modest amount.

Same here! This could be the first Xmas since the AA range came out that I haven't managed to convince someone to buy me a plane as an alternative to socks or a CD. Even my kids have been 'brainwashed' by Mrs Shuttle into thinking that giving an AA plane to Daddy is 'boring'.Bah humbug!! I'm speechless. My 1/32 Alan Deere Spitfire has arrived and it is absolutely stunning. The finish is fantastic and detail is amazing. It is a beauty! I've never seen a 1/32 in the raw before and given that jets are my thing, this really is cracking. There may be more to come.
As for Corgi doing a 1/32 EE Lightning, okay that's a bit severe, but what about a 1/48 then? F.Mk.6 please with optional overwing tanks. This now has to be my dream model. A-A-A-L-L-L-L-B-B-E-R-R-R-R-T-T-T-T-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , WHERE ARE YOU! ?

Christmas came early! :D Just picked up a 1/144 B-17 I've been looking for on eBay for over a year. The very first little one Corgi did: #48201, "Bit o' Lace", which is rarer than hen's teeth over here. http://www.tricatus.co.uk/48201.htm

This was doubly interesting since I see I was bidding against the formidable Chris Lem at XXXXXXX.co.uk, and also.....wait! Oh, no!
Jeez, Neil, I'm terribly sorry! ;)
