Leeming have a few old airframes about, there is a Javelin ,they did have a Lightning outside 11Sqn plus Phantoms used as decoys etc.The Javelin is at 54'17'24.03 N 1'31'26.25 W

There is a Phantom by the HAS shelters to the left of the field but the ones in the pics I posted seem to be painted on the pan????

JB,

I think they are painted on decoys - no shadows unlike the Hawks and the one of the paint lines appears to go straight through the 'decoy' on the right.

The Phantom to the west is probably XV499, although I thought it was in a hanger.

On a line south from the 'decoys' is the gate guardian, Javelin XA634 and on a line due north, a camo Lightning. A few years back the 'inner' gate guardian was Lightning F6 XR753 but I understood 11 Sqd took it to Coningsby in 2007 when they reformed there with Typhoons.

I'm going to Leeming on Saturday for this

so hopefully will be able to look (and get pics).

Interestingly, there is an F-4 coming from Germany.

JB,

The definitive answer is yes they are painted. However, Phantom XV499 stands there now - just to the left as you look at your scan. That google pic must be old - I would say XV499 been there a while. Its got flat tyres, rust, moss and bolts etc missing - it looks a real sorry state but it was the plane that everyone wanted to see.

Arno and DCRanger have both posted pics on other threads. Heres a couple of others (because you can't have too many Phantom pictures):

Interesting comments I heard from station personnel were 'that they wanted to get rid of it' and someone else in the group claimed 'that even in that state its more airworthy and more use than most of the Tonkas'.

I'm told the Lightning that also appears on goggle earth, just to the north, has gone.

Thanks for looking Blackbox:) What a shame to see XV449 looking like that, I am sure CFBC must a have a stable block at the mansion spare n which to store this iconic aircraft so as to save her for the forum:LOL:

No problems in respect of storage. Just say when and where.. Oh, and you pay the bill for the aircraft! ;) :D :)

Nice pictures.

XV499 is currently a BDRT airframe, however she's earmarked for the Yorkshire Air Museum and has been for some time now. Hopefully when she's moved they'll do a nice job on her and restore her back to her former glory.

Here's another 23 Sqn survivor XV497 which now resides outside the 23 Sqn ops block at RAF Waddington.
