The Defiant Man

A couple of weeks ago I received a PM from another member offering me a Jan-July 05 catalogue, as they had noticed from one of my posts that my regular "supplier" hadn't delivered.
Having gladly taken up this offer, I have subsequently received in the last couple of days a catalogue from my regular supplier.
What should I do? Sell my spare on the bay? Nope, I offered it via a PM to a different member who is helping me enhance my collection, as I know he lives where the catalogues can sometimes be difficult to get.
It is this helping each other, as much as the information & banter, that makes being a member enjoyable and worthwhile.
Long may it continue :)

The Defiant Man,
Well done sir, that is a kind offer to send the catalogue to a much needed fellow AA collector and forum member. :)

I agree TDM, this is a great place. I belong to one or two other forums for flight simming etc, but I can honestly say this forum is the best by far! The general feeling of the place is non hostile, very friendly and helpful unlike some other forums where threads seem to constantly decend into one big bun fight! ;)
My catalogue went walk abouts in the post, and Mr White, and stealth F117 ensured that another was sent to me, thanks guys that's really appreciated. :)

Yes, this is a fun place to visit. Not too silly, not too serious, and so far we've been blissfully free of the childish flame-outs to be found on other forums. :)
It's good to meet up at events, too - quite rare in the cyber-world......

hear, hear, Defiant Man, great forum we have here. And whoever that lucky dude is who got your spare catalog must be truely grateful. Make's me wish... oh hey, what's this in my mailbox?!!!! :D

Yep, this is a fun forum which really adds to the collecting of the AA range (and other die-casts). With some top input from all around the world plus some good banter it really puts the icing on the cake. Top marks to all the team for running it so well!!

Have to say again that I do enjoy this forum......noticed just recently that there have been one or two real slam-bang, flame-out punch-ups at a US-based one which, although great entertainment to watch, often leave a residual sour taste IMHO. ( And no, I didn't get involved - life's just too short ! ).
We're fortunate that generally the atmosphere here is 'light', sticking to model aircraft and the historical events which inspired them - plus social stuff/humour among the members. There are loads of 'heavy' forums out there for those who want them.
Well done admin, for creating it, and the contributors for keeping it in perspective.

Only downside is meeting some dodgy characters!:p

I agree, there is plenty of informed comment, the people are friendly and it certainly is the place to get the latest information. The humour is 99% spot on and we seem to have a good mix of collectors.

Hello all
I have been told that I talk Sh1t and out of my ar5e over the last month :( So I can't say I am real happy at the moment.
I have also had so real nasty things said about my spelling.... can't think why:eek:
Lets not knock the US site :) I saw a member who was having to sell his collection and the other members were very good to him. They even offered him help and support. Me......I immediately PM'ed him and offered him a $10 for his Lancaster and flying mule 190 :D

I'm a member of several forums because I collect a variety of diecast models etc. For variety I use different forum names such as Ozcolmod, OzDigger, etc, but I guess most people know who I am as soon as I start 'something' :)
Initially I used to get upset with the antics of some members on forums with eBay sales etc because I don't like to see fellow collectors ripped off. However, I'm now resigned to the fact that most people are happy to pay big money for something they are after, and if they can afford it, why should I worry.
That said, I must admit I still find it difficult to bite my tongue over some comments such as when a certain US forum member said the British and Commonwealth Air Men only flew at night because they lacked the courage to fly in daylight. People are entitled to their own opinions regarding aircraft types such as B-17s versus Lancasters, but comments like the former are way out of line imo. Ignorance and arrogance can be forgiven but imo members should be banned for inflamatory and racist postings such as that.
Anyway, I've found that the vast majority of members on all the forums I post on are genuine and helpful people. Each forum has it's own 'flavour', and perhaps an element of prejudice, but they are much the same imo.

Ah ha,that explains some of the recent cryptic comments for those of us who are only just getting to grips with this forum and haven't strayed elsewhere!
Assuming a forum contains a cross section of society, it will from time to time throw up a comment that is truly objectionable to the vast majority, that quoted by Oz above on the other forum being one of them::(
Best however leave these people to late night shock radio phone ins. IMPO based on admittedly a short forum history, the contributors to this one share a love of aircraft, die-cast and enjoy the harmless banter that makes it fun to use/contribute to. Long may that continue - a descent into nationalistic nastiness would see most switch off. Only scary thing about this one is that Agent X20 maybe does look like his avatar!:D

You wonder if people posting this kind of thing are just trying to stir other members up or whether they are just plain ignorant
I'm pretty sure that most members (either side of the pond and on either forum) would not agree with this statement.

Sure the poster probably meant that they lacked the equipment to fly during the day... funny how each side preferred their particular arena in that many US guys felt that flying at night was just too blo8dy dangerous.. and vice versa..:) ... both have my undiluted respect..

The thread was closed before I could bring my guns to bear on the guy and it was recently deleted altogether, which was the best solution imo. It was a 'Best Bomber of WWII' thread, and perhaps I stung a few US members by saying the Lancaster was the best, and the B-17 was overated like the Sherman tank. Of course the B-17 and Sherman made significant contributions to WWII but even those with a little historical knowledge realise the two were overated compared to other weapons.
Anyway, I don't think he meant the comment to be nasty, I feel he actually believed that was the reason for night bombing. Which is perhaps a sadder scenario if it reflects the actual beliefs of most US guys in their twenties. Hollywood etc has a lot to answer for imo.

Think your right on that Oz, more a case of uninformed opinion - that he really should have stayed away from - rather than maliciousness (I hope anyway.. )
If he'd known better he'd have realized the USAAF very nearly had to resort to night bombing too given loss rates before the fighter escorts were able to stay with the B17's and B24's, and I was going to post as such but realized the thread was becoming more jockular than anything. I guess a subject titled "best" anything is bound to! (especially when there's no distinction between medium and heavy bomber)
Having a family member who was a rear gunner on Lancs and a family friend in the same spot on B-24's, and knowing both of their experiences in detail, all I can say is that all allied bomber crews have my full respect and appreciation.
but... if I had to choose (and we're talking heavies) I'd pick the Lanc.. ;) :D

Before anyone gets too serious please be aware that we all make mistakes and hindsight is a wonderful thing.......:)
So far as WW2 Heavy Bombers concerned they all had their good and bad points but more importantly their combined efforts and those of their brave crews made the difference!.............:)
