I thought the same, though being somewhat of a London Bus tragic myself, it was perfectly understandable.
I had'nt bought a diecast that did'nt sport wings or tracks for a few years so it was probably time to break the drought.
Quite a large lump of diecast 335mm long x 175 high x 90mm wide.
My father would have ridden the real No.37 bus when this one started service & during the war years :)

Actually, Dill, it DOES have a wing. Look at the OXO advert again! Regardless . . . wow! Stunning! I feel like just like hopping on the back, scooting up the stairs and plopping myself down in the front seat and lighting up a smoke! Good memories in London, alright.
As you know, you are not the only one with a penchant for buses . . . so do I, but the core of my collection is based around the gear in our city (Toronto) and what I have used while on holiday in the UK.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/upkeep/DAF/upkeeps_buses.jpg
It seems like Cornby likes Canada as much as I do, so they have blessed my collection with 3 sterling items. The GM Grey Lines Coach that I used to travel on between Hamilton and Toronto during the mid-70s (same destination card too!), the TTC* streetcar (tram) that I used daily here in the 80s and the TTC GM Fishbowl bus I also used regularly during the 70s and 80s here. The rest comes in the forms of LT double deckers and a new passion for the EFE London Underground cars (The 1938 ones are rare and dear!). A 'wacky lot' we airplane folk, yes?? :D

Re; the Green 1/24th buses in Modelzone....
That's the second issue (Greenline) that looks much the same as the 1st
£69 from M.Z's a good price, esp' as they're escalating towards the £ 100/£125 bracket from some retailers/traders.
2904 did sell out, so I guess as there ain't much difference 'tween the TWO (1st & 2nd issue), the latter ain't selling so well ?
No, I AIN'T a 'Bus-Nut' or enthusiast, but being a Londoner who used to travel on these things as a teenager (pre-my '67 Sunbeam-Rapier), I've got a soft-spot for 'em; & THESE models look great; so I've taken an interest in this particular range of Die-cast, as they're sheer 'class'..... (unlike most of the die-cast buses available in smaller-scale, which look like utter-cack !

Looking at that "Thing" dill', makes ya realise WHY folks hate die-cast buses
It's only 'cause the Sun-Star 1/24th R.M.'s look so accurate that I ever bothered at all.
Pity they (Sun-Star) didn't make more (different) route-destinations available, as I don't think they exploited the (typical) 'Red' R.M.'s enough.
I'm amazed how many people (not on this forum, must add) actually buy some of those 'cack' looking small-scale buses that look so 'toy-like'

My take of it is, people will collect what they have had experience with, by and large. That certainly is the case with me anyhow. We would like to avoid 'cack' wherever possible, but on occasion a model can be borderline towards that status yet I'll buy it because it represents a specific event or turning point or something personal. Personally, I'm very fond of my Toronto region Corgi buses only because they helped facilitate some very memorable events in my life during the 70s and 80s here. Yeah, good memories, indeed.
Unless one is VERY old, it is hard to say the same about ones WWII collection of say, bombers?! ;) Buses are like propliners in we may have actually had an experience directly involving them that was special.
By the way, that is a very nice looking tin bus, in my estimation.

It's only 'cause the Sun-Star 1/24th R.M.'s look so accurate that I ever bothered at all.
Pity they (Sun-Star) didn't make more (different) route-destinations available, as I don't think they exploited the (typical) 'Red' R.M.'s enough.
I'm amazed how many people (not on this forum, must add) actually buy some of those 'cack' looking small-scale buses that look so 'toy-like'
You certainly would'nt buy the Tin Routemaster on the grounds of accuracy or the viability of its 'Green-House Gas' friendly propulsion system:)
I'll also put my hand up to buying a Corgi 1/76 non-Original Omnibus RM that happened to have the same Route No. my Mum worked on as a Clippy years ago ;)
There's probably still life left in the Sun Star RM Range, but I think we both agree, liveries like the Vernons Pools debacle should be left off
My take of it is, people will collect what they have had experience with, by and large.

Quite well made too (in czech Republic), don't know how many they sold at RRP GBP80

The 'Vernon's Pools' livery was one enormous 'Gaff' on a Grand-Scale.
Went down like a Pork-Pie at a Barmitzvah !
Apparently even the decals slide down on some models, so a re-spray is a nightmare !!!!!!!!!!
Sun-Star didn't expliot that FANTASTIC mould in anything like the success-rate/style that (say) Hobbymaster are doing just now with their F.4 Phantom (in 1/72).
So dissapointing.
Still can't get around how someone never had the 'nous'/savvy to market some after-market decals for the Red versions; as they would have made a killing:cool:
Can understand Upkeep's point about "something personal"
That's the way I felt about seeing F.O.V. release a 387th B.G B.26 Maruader..
only to find that EVERY one I've seen (or heard of) is a complete 'howler':(
Strange how EVERYONE who models that a/c nearly ALWAYS choose the 387th's colours.... & yet the base itself (& the 387th's history) goes uncelebrated
Have had x 4 examples (brand-new & straight from the factory) in my hands & yet due to (very) poor quality-control, have ALWAYS given them a 'wide-berth'........ shame.

The Greenline RM coach versions are not much to write home about IMHO of the four RMs I have this is my least favourite.
I understand the moulds are being retired after the Arriva "Last Routemaster" to ensure the collectability of the series.
I look forward to all the RT issues from Sun Star plus the 1:24 RF from Gilbow (EFE) :)

I'm real suprised at that Nimrod
I've always thought the Green ones are well-executed & look decent.
My least fave' one (that I've got) is the 'Bronze' 50th Annv'
The best one for me is my most expensive one; the East-Ham 'R.M' (£125)
I've yet to get the Arriva (looks nice).
Shame the A.E.C. R.T's are SOOOOO expensive
The Gilbow stuff's rare AND expensive, so I doubt I'll get any.
So what ARE the four Sun-Star 'R.M.'s that YOU have got then ?????????

Its the lineing out of the lower deck windows that spoil the RMC Hornchurch the corners should be rounded & not squared off....I understand why it has been done like that but it does spoil the look for me...as does the sticker used for the destination blind.
My collection of RMs so far are 2902 Standard RM (RM254), 2904 Greenline RM coach (RMC1453), 2906 Silver Jubilee (SRM25) & H2909 LT 50th Anniversary (RM1933)....just waiting for the Arriva version to be issued to complete my Routemaster wants. :)

Apparently it's out, now !!!!!!!!!
I've seen one on E-bay the other night, but as he wants £100 'Buy-it-Now' I figure the price may drop, as more become available.
Having read FierytheAngelsfell's post, I'd agree that some well executed Airfield vehicles would go down a storm.
Personally, as I LOVE these Sun-Star 'R.M.'s (& they now do the A.E.C. Regent, as per dill's pix) I'd LOVE to see 'em do an A.E.C. Matador lorry in 1/24th !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ground vehicles always seem to be as rare as hens teeth. Lledo did a BoB series a few years back that were, well . . . they were. What's left? Yes, the Airfix stuff, but not everyone can or wants to get back into kit bashing.
The 'grand master' of model vehicle, Cornby, should have provided this stuff in 1:72 ages ago, given the amount of Aviation Archive stuff they've pumped out. It's an easy way for them to make some extra dough, and keeps us coming back for more. Win-win. They could have added 1:72 ground crew sets as well. Even their Classic Propliners suffer from a lack of decent 1:144 GSE. Grand opportunities missed, I tell 'ya!

Hi dill' ; that "Open-Top R.M" sells like a Preist at an Orgy
Can pick 'em up for a lowly £ 60 over here.
Almost as 'pox-ridden' as the dreaded "Littlewoods" fiasco.
Now't apparently wrong with it; other than the fact that folks like to see a Roof on London's most famous vehicle; (unless they're actual tourists on a rare sunny-day inside the real-thing itself:D )
Really sorry to hear you got stung by the 'B.B.' gun too......
Scott's saga put me off using him (B.B) as a buyer - shame, as he's selling that "Last" R.M. at sensible money.
Can't fathom WHY the R.T's are SOOOOO much more expensive than the R.M's ????????????

I hear 'ya HC, but sometimes display space doesn't allow for such grand-sized models. Aircraft are my first priority, so they get premium consideration -- ALWAYS -- and buses, as much as I am fond of them, have to take the back seat. That said, that Corgi model may well be $h!te compared to the Sun Star one, but the Corgi one I have space for and it will bring back the good memories just as well.
It's not just a matter of dollars either, as I have been looking at the EFE 1938 London Underground set that is custom motorized. That set of 4 cars runs around £195 (+/-). Gotta spread it around!!:D
Again, though, space will become a major deciding factor in this one. (Gawd, I love the London Underground, though!!)

Also difficult to afford! I think one has to be prepared to flex the creative license somewhat regarding 'absolute' authenticity. Geez I live with Dowty u/c on my Halifax Mk II when it supposed to be Messier, as an example. And in the case of this motorized set -- I seriously doubt the motorcar front and back has enough chuff to haul six carriage cars anyhow. Just a guess on my part, mind you. The place I nicked the image of the 1938 EFE set wants £110 for a set of 4 NON-motorized, and £195 for a motorized set (custom done). A bit dear no matter which way you go, as far as I can see it. Lovely though. The place that offers these is Radley in the UK (HERE) (http://www.radleymodels.co.uk/). Just click on EFE down the left side of the page. Of course if you were interested to see any of this stuff in 'action' you'd want to pop over to Metro Models (Here) (http://www.metromodels.net/). Poke around there a bit and it will knock your sox off. (See below)

Exclusive First Editions says these are 1:76 (or 'OO') and will run on that track, if motorized (has to be custom done, but EFE designed for that). And 1:76 is just a tick from 1:72. As far as another vehicle type is concerned, yes, that does make me ponder. I think I could make an exception just this once!
As a static display, I could easily see that 1936 British Airways JU-52 (AA36903) somewhere nearby too! Or perhaps my early RAF bomber collection - Wellys, Halifax, the lot. No one in their right mind would question Sun Star's calibre of detail. Absolutely superb, indeed. I know sometimes the magazine reviewers get their hands on a pre-pro model and get a touch picky. I have yet to see an EFE tube train in real life to validate their interior detail claims. And I'm not THAT far gone yet either lads -- I just finally found and retrieved my coveted 'Grim Reaper' mossie out of my storage locker so I can get it up with my Dams Lanc. Currently, I am seeking another pistol hot aircraft with a daring story to accompany it. I'm contemplating kit bashing a Mustang Mk III in Leonard Cheshire's target marking colours based off that scrappy image I found and posted here earlier.

Not sure how correct it is, but it sounds legit. That will join Johnson's Spit Mk IX and my Lysander Mk III 'spy taxi'.
I must admit, I do find this bus stuff most interesting and glad to see others here do too! I plan to actively pursue buses a bit more over the coming year.

Your not being lured to the "darker than" dark side are you Cards?
Not quite, but I've been picking up a few of the Matchbox Yesteryear vintage cars at bargain prices lately and some of them complement my aircraft collection nicely ... the rest just look  :o. (It's actually quite refreshing to buy some diecast that says "Made in England" and still looks good after 30+ years :) :D.)
Won't buy many more of them though as the wife just said that I'll collect 'anything', my response to which was that some forum members are so far gone that they actually collect buses  - I won't repeat her exact words ...

There is something very comforting about seeing "Made in England" on quality items. Its all over my vintage Dinky Toys too. Love it.

There SHOULD be a section/threads for me, dill & Upkeep (though even they're going to extremes with the ****** 'London-Underground' trains !)

This won't trouble the "a/c only" brigade - but for those into vehicles, including Aviaction, Nimrod, dill' & Upkeep, you'll need a well-strong nerve for this, esp' at £ 125 (rrp) a throw:D

Will do a full-report on M.H.II in the 'Automotive' section, where it's more applicable (sometime soon....), as there's NO (real) PLACE to put 'it' (on THIS board), other than to 'tack-it' on to this thread.....
Ya never know; some (other) poor soul is BOUND to need to 'give-surgery' to an example of Sun-Star's finest
In a nutshell; a rattling/loose Main-interior bulkhead
Ended-up, above the seats, by the lower-ceiling (clearly visible thru lower-windows), so had NO OPTION other than to "get busy" round it & "go-internal" :( :( (Gulp).
NOT what I wanted on an £ 125 model.

These vehicles were bought to replace the much loved Routemaster in the early 1970s but due to reliability issues & its general inability to cope with Londons traffic most were quickly sold off to either provincial operators or Hong Kong operators like China Motor Bus & Kowloon Motor Bus.
The model is made in China by Drumwell for Gilbow (aka EFE) & has opening spring loaded passenger doors, opening engine cover & rear upper window.
The destination blinds can be scrolled to show five different routes, this particular vehicle was based at Romford on the so called Forrest Route.

Shame they're SOooooo Expensive, too.
BTW, what's the ACTUAL model/Cat' No. of THAT particular example ?
I've NEVER seen anyone stocking them; other than "E-bay" dealers, so they ain't exactly easy to obtain !

Ive got one of their 1/18 modern cabs (there's a Marmite version too :o ) its just not up to the quality (or price-point granted) of the 1/24 buses.
Minichamps have a nice 1/18 FX4, just wish I could get a good 50's, 60's or 70's cab in 1/24 to compliment the buses. The only 1/24 FX4 Black Cab Ive seen is the Welly version, not too bad as long as you keep yer distance :)

After much tarting about trying to upload from Photobucket -angry- I did it the simple way.
The model looks very nice overall but IMHO it could do without gimmicks like opening windows, it would be better to mould two or three in the open position instead.
The paint work is very good with no overspray or blemishes & build quality is on a par with the RM I had mine from my local hobby store to special order...their price to me was £130 which I am happy to pay for such an impressive model.-smile

Looking at the certificate dilli it states a production run of 2000 which IMHO is 500 too many so if you are prepared to wait a few months I would not be suprised if they dropped to RM prices :)

So, I have come to realize that there are two definitions to the word "want"
Want as in "I need that xxxx model" which is results in average run of the mill stuff, like Corgi and some other manufacturers have also fallen guilty of the same. So we end up with a lot of models that we regard as nice, and they stay in the box.
Want is also to "desire" something. Now to my point. Pictured below are two models. One bought because it was made, and I really "wanted" (read desired) it. The BEA RMA bus from EFE.
Second up is the Sunstar Morris Minor in 1/12 scale (and yes it is big) Saw it at Huntingdon, and with some haggling, and loans from that mysterious Agent chappie and Arno, it was in the bag. I owe those two a pint, if my budget will stretch that far.
These are a joy to handle, look at, admire etc etc.

You'll never complain about Corgi's weathering attempts again once you've seen what P.E. can come up with
The drivers look a bit tall for the cabin and can't see why you'd need two drivers anyway
Taking the photo, noticed that gap below the red stripe...oh dear, still a nice lump of Sci-Fi diecast I think :)

Two more Minichamps 1:12 bikes to add to my collection of 1970s superbikes, the Lilac one is a 1973 Suzuki GT750 a three cylinder watercooled two stroke.
It was on the racing version that Barry Sheene had his well documented 170mph get off in 1974 while preparing for the Daytona 200.
The Green/Yellow bike is the 1973 Kawasaki Z1 a 900cc DOHC four cylinder bike that for its day produced awesome power & speed (84bhp @ 130mph).
Mike Hailwood bought one while living in South Africa, his insurance broker obviously quite unaware of his legendary status asked "Mr Hailwood this is a very powerful machine do you have any experience of riding such bikes?" to which Mike replied "er yes one or two".

The Bonnie was the big bike to aspire to in the early & mid sixties for most of my mates, I on the other hand could never afford heavy metal on apprentice wages but at the time lusted after a BSA Rocket Gold Star,
the Minichamps classic bike series is on the whole very good & are very detailed, they also do the Z1 & Honda CB750 four in 1:6 scale which are truly incredible models but are £140 each ...but I do plan to have one of each. :)

I bet a good example of the Suzuki RE5 Rotary would be worth a few bob now. From what I remember they did not sell to well when they were new. Not too many about now I bet. The Light Blue Le Mans was the one I had.

The RE5 must have seemed like a good idea at the time but although in theory the engine was a simple single rotor its ignition system (it had two both CDI & points) was complex as was the five venturi carb plus it had only the performance of the GT55O & the weight of a GT750 & the fuel consumption of a V8 Rover & I am sure it was about £500 more than the GT750.
There are several Minichamps dealers offering the Le Mans at around the £55-60 mark with free postage. :)

I remember a (rare) Blue-one pulling-up next to my bike, at Aldgate, on the way to work, one morn'
I liked the Mk.II & esp' Mk.III 'Le-Mans', but not so the Mk.IV, which looked like it'd been rear-ended !!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone raved about the 900.SS Ducati's (at THAT time), but, saw an amusing-event; having seen a guy with a BRAND-NEW 900.SS who'd just left his office & COULDN'T get the thing started.
I was doing a Pillar-box collection at the time, in an ol' Royal-Mail Marina-van
On the 4.pm/5.pm & 6.pm collections, this poor (mug) bloke was trying to get his "Italian-Thouroughbred" started :D , to NO-AVAIL......
When I returned to do the (final) 7.pm collection (Worship.St,London), the brand-new 900.SS was being 'airlifted' home on an A.A. transporter
Never get that Greif with Jap-bikes:cool:
Mind you, wouldn't touch an RE-5 with a Barge-Pole, M'self
At least the 'Kettle' (GT.750) is easy to re-build, as well as holding it's money

An amazing model mate !
I remember when the 1100's came out, as they were developed from the 99.bhp GSX.1100 "coffin-tanks" that replaced the bike in my Avatar, within the Suzuki-range.
I had my heart set on an 'EZ' version (same bike, but more sensible riding position; the "non-Katana" version)
They were £ 2, 600 - £ 2,700 at the time ('EZ'), as opposed to the Katana's retailing at £ 3,000 over here in th' U.K.
I ended-up buying a Z.1000.J-3, instead (cracking-bike !) about £ 500 less.
With hindsight, I SHOULD'VE waited for the 1100-R ('Lawson'-Replica)
Worth a King's ransom, thesedays:(
I'd trade my ENTIRE die-cast collection IF I'd ever found a 'MINT' one:cool
Your Kat' model really-does look like the real-thing !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Makes me laugh, tho' = seeing the Voltage regulator/Rectifier unit exposed

Wayne Gardner comes from the area I now live in, Ive seen this actual bike in his office in Wollongong.......it did'nt look as well finished as this model :)
The 1/12 version of Gardner's Honda would look nice sitting next to that Katana I think :)

Thanks for posting the pics dilli :) :cool Minichamps have caught the look of the Kat very well.
I borrowed a test bike from the Suzuki dealer in Cambridge which was the 1100cc version & on the A14 between Cambridge & Newmarket it reached 140mph before I had to roll back the throttle due to a **ick in an XR3i refusing to move over for a (vastly) superior vehicle.
Wayne Gardener is one of my all time racing idols    & I for one think that Mr Rossi would have far fewer Moto GP wins if Wayne Gardener was around today.
Everyone raved about the 900.SS Ducati's true enough Hornchurch all the biking press of that time had the hots for anything Italian.....but then they did not have to pay their hard earned readies for them, even today Dukes need far too much expensive cosseting compared to Oriental metal...my Burgervan has done over 16000 miles with just oil & filter changes:cool

Managed to prise a Gilbow/EFE DMS Bus in 1/24 from the hands of a trader. Considerable financial assistance sought from the Submariner chappie, so currently under a PFI. 50% Split ownership, or thereabouts.
I own the Bus, he owns the missing windscreen wiper
So not perfect. The front destination blind doesn't appear to turn properly, and the front wiper is broken. For something circa half of normal selling price I am well chuffed. Note the rear-view mirrors haven't been fitted at this stage.

You may also remember that the 327 was the last route on London Transport to use pre-war RTs. There was a weak bridge at Broxbourne and the post-war RTs were heavier. LT had eight* red pre-war RTs painted into Lincoln green and a full set of blinds made—including roof box numbers—just for the 327 to Nazeing Common..
.............so if you scratch it, is there red paint underneath..?

Not sure why the rear route number box was blanked Hornchurch, I imagine that it was blanked out during the war ......most buses having restricted blinds during that period.....after the war rear route boxes were not incorporated on the new RTs.
As for the price Sun Star hiked up their prices late last year......cost of raw materials & rising production costs being the given reason........today my local dealer told me that Sun Star will be reducing future issues of the RT by £20.

LT had eight* red pre-war RTs painted into Lincoln green and a full set of blinds made—including roof box numbers—just for the 327 to Nazeing Common..
.............so if you scratch it, is there red paint underneath..?
No red Agent but if I am ever unlucky enough to damage the paint I will consider retouching the damage in LT red for added authenticity.

When I lived in Cambridge this used to be a regular trip for me, a few pics Dill to browse over.
The Aston Villa official team coach was operated by Flights of Birmingham it is a Harrington Cavalier body on an AEC Reliance chassis.
The 1960s was a decade of decay & massive under achievement for Villa so the only trophy this vehicle would have carried to Villa Park would be the 1960-61 League Cup....it is far too modern to remember their last FA Cup triumph:D

EFE have done various wartime buses but two in particular that would be authentic to the period would be the EFE 1/76 Guy Arab LT Grey (99203)
& EFE 1/76 AEC RT Double Decker Bus London Transport Central Area (34001)
you should not have any problem finding either of these models which were released circa 2005/6 in fact kill two birds with one stone & visit Showbus at Duxford next Sunday.
You could pick up the models for a song & enjoy all that the museum offers too.:)

Thanx for that information and the image of that Guy RT (I used to take the 23 Marylebone). It's actually on its way here now. I can't make it to Duxford (regrettably). Thanx also for the info on that AEC RT which will now also on my 'hit list' -- for the same reasons as Knockando -- a BoB connection to my aeroplane collection.
Some other BoB era buses to also consider:
http://www.hattons.co.uk/images/products/99202_1.JPG
^ EFE 99202:
Daimler utility bus "London Transport"
Carrying few adverts and painted in a muddy brown this Daimler registered GYE 64, fleet number D 74 features the blackout visibility markings and has anti splinter film on the windows and is seen operating route 137 to Highgate. . . . £17
http://www.hattons.co.uk/images/products/99205_1.JPG
^ EFE 99205:
Guy Arab II utility bus "Southdown"
Operating services along the south-east coast, Southdown buses were particularly vulnerable to damage from bombers and marauding fighter aircraft, so the livery was camouflaged to hide them. This Guy Arab II Utility registered GUF 120, fleet number 420 works route 12 to Newhaven, Seaford and Eastbourne. . . . £16
http://www.hattons.co.uk/images/products/99207_1.JPG
^ EFE 99207:
Leyland TD1 1930's d/deck bus "Plymouth City Transport"
The heavy bombing of the dockyards destroyed most of Plymouth's buses and old buses like this Leyland registered DR 7405, fleet number 124 were made serviceable and brought back into use, on route to the Theatre. . . . £16
These selections are taken from Hatton's (http://www.hattons.co.uk/) in Liverpool.

That is a nice model knockando the roof on the model is a very dark brown as was the real thing & yes they look almost black in the old wartime footage.
In wartime a lot of companies painted the roof matt grey to blend in with the road if viewed from the air, but at times just about any colour was slapped on to preserve the steel panels of the utility spec buses hence grey or brown London Transport vehicles.

As an Ex Lorry-Driver, it DOES warm my heart to think that many of the old R.M.'s still survive (tho' I DREAD to think of how-many got exported to China)
I'm STILL trying to reason WHY the Sun Star R.T. is 'overpriced' (in my book)

Anyhow; I once again thak ya for the cool-pix at Dux' & I'll be interested to see if col "capitulates" ???????

BUT, for me, those Buses HAVE TO BE 1/24th, or nothing :p ;)

Wow Hornchurch you must almost have a complete set of 1:24 RMs my count is five plus three RTs & three Daimler Fleetlines plus three Bedford OBs.
As for RMs going to Hong Kong I can find only two RM1288 (HK 1931) &
RM1873 (HK 1932) most ex LT types bought by Hong Kong operators were either Daimler Fleetlines or Leyland Titans from the mid 1970s when LT found these vehicles which were meant to replace RMs did not cope with the harsh environment of the central London routes & were sold off to provincial operators in the UK or to the likes of China Motor Bus & Kowloon Motor Bus.
The price of the Sun Star RT rose late last year due to material costs (so they say) the next release will be £20 cheaper.
Sadly I will not be at Showbus next weekend but I will keep my ear to the ground regarding the price of the country version.:)

The first test shots of the 1:24 EFE (Gilbow) AEC RF were on display at the Showbus event at Duxford on 27/09.
I would guess the first release would be available twelve months hence to coincide with next years Showbus.
It would appear that it will have scrolling blinds as per the Fleetline & of course sprung loaded doors & working suspension.
Which in turn means I am going to be on my way to the poor house as I can think of at least four versions that I want...as for price somewhere between £95-£110 would be my (un)educated guess.

I was talking to my Dad today about the London buses etc around the war years, he recalled the single deckers he got to see were nicknamed 'charobancs' from his description they resembled Bedford OB's. These 'charobancs' were not on the usual bus-routes, it was the thing for neighbourhoods to hire them out for trips to the coast for a paddle on a pebbly beach :)

It was out, along with a red and white foam tender, the RAF one was like my one, but with a red cheat line and RAF titles.

The AEC Q singles were not all that common, for sure. Apparently they were primarily used on the Green Line routes and on a few routes in Central London, painted the customary red. For how long, and how consistent is beyond my scope with the skimpy reference I have. I just find them, and their d/deck brethren rather fascinating, as they were apparently very revolutionary for the time.

A facinating pic Upkeep the Q type vehicles were advanced for their day by having under floor engines, a practice used by Midland Red after the war on their single deckers......apparently the doors on the LT Q single deck types operating in central London had to remain open on the insistence of the police.

I can only guess that it was to speed up passengers entry & exit & therefore keeping the time the vehicle was at a stand still to a minimum thus keeping traffic in the city flowing

Well, my shot DID come from the same book. Picked mine up in London in Sep. '83 on vacation. Fascinating!
Yes the Q3 d/decks. Lovely looking, with a styling somewhat looking like the Trolleybuses, while ALSO being quite revolutionary for the time. Perhaps the reason for their premature demise? I have to admit, I do find these 'advanced' AEC creatures rather alluring. The good news is, Corgi does have a current stream of Q type d/decks in the stream with about 4-6 to choose from. Definitely cutting edge 30's design! (OK. I admit -- I really like these!!)
http://www.ehattons.com/images/products/340pxwide/OM45702_1.JPG
And the price is amazing. These range from £7-10 each!! (RRP about £20-22). Mr. H (http://www.ehattons.com/stocklist/prodlist.aspx?ManID=23&PrTyID=37&ScID=1&EraID=3) has a lot of these, should you be interested, HERE (http://www.ehattons.com/stocklist/prodlist.aspx?ManID=23&PrTyID=37&ScID=1&EraID=3). So what shows up at my door exactly 11 days after ordering it? Yup -- you guessed it, my Q type from Mr. H. I've been wanting this since I saw the release notice in one of my diecast magazines. It sure looks nice with that Halifax, eh?
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/upkeep/DAF/CorgiQtypesdeck_550.jpg
Considering the thing isn't much bigger than an ordinary Mars bar, the detail is quite impressive. The engine cover and engine have detail that appears like PE work. Very crisp all-around. BTW: What looks like 'wear and tear' worn lines through the panels is just my boggy lighting. The model is very sharp.
Shipping was quite impressive from Mr. H too. All nicely wrapped like a Christmas gift with brown paper on the outside of the box and postal twine. Classic. The way we USED to do it here. Not anymore. Trust the British to preserve those wonderful little touches. Regardless, Mr. H will be getting my 1:76 bus business soon again.

Well, judging from that little Q single that came waltzing in yesterday, that really doesn't surprise me, somehow. It seemed a bit more detailed than what I would expect from a Corgi model (at least judging from my aeroplanes and my other Corgi 1:50 buses). I am impressed enough to add, at the very least, one or two Q d/decks to my collection as well. They really speak well of classic 30's industrial design -- of which I am a complete sucker for -- hence my fascination with the Hurricane, Blenheim Mk I and Mk II Halifax. ;)

The illumination is a nice touch, especially the warm even light throughout the inside being contrasted by the ice blue of the headlamps. Maybe I'll illuminate the inside of my SnS DamsLanc? :D
Did you have anything to do with this magnificent piece of work Mr. Dill?

I may be wrong, but I believe that that is part of the S&S range...

Craig and Nimrod are correct Upkeep :) this is the CC25908 SnS Routemaster. I'd toyed with idea of lighting one of my Sun Star Routemasters and could'nt resist the Corgi version when browsing at Hattons. I can only claim the credit for the photo. ;)
The destination blinds are way too translucent for my liking

Well, I'll be . . . How did I miss this??
I thought it may be a code 3 thing, as there have been some sharp illuminations done here locally to Corgi's Toronto streetcars and buses (all of which I also have). They look as good as those images posted. I had no idea that Corgi took the SnS beyond aeroplanes, though. (Shows how narrow focused I've become -- note to self: must spend more time in Hatton's).

While most of these are in period for the RT I think only the PEARL advert would be OK for the RM.
The Kit Kat font needs work on it but its getting there, my initial reason for doing these was to produce an authentic PEARL advert for my 1:24 LT Fleetline the twits did PEARL instead of PEARL:(
Once happy with them I will print them on to paper & attach them to the model with double sided tape, they should look more convincing than either transfers or tampo printing.

Nimrod, cheers for the reply & your endeavour to create suitable ad's
I'm hoping I've deleted the other pix you had & left the 'Pearl' picture/example intact for this post (?)
Like you said = that 'Pearl' assurance advert is ENTIRELY suitable for a late 1970's R.M. = as before I gained my driving-licence I used to get to my Girlfriend's house using a No.86 or 193 (L.T.) 'Routemaster' & whilst waiting (forever !) at the bus-stop, the HUGE advertisment-hoarding opposite between the Pub & the Church was invariably displaying THAT EXACT same "Pearl" assurance advert ! (seeing that ad' is like a time-capsule !)
If you actually DO progress to making successful adv' decals, gimme a shout !

While this is not a recent purchase today is only the second time I have had the model out of the box.
It is a hand built resin model manufactured to order by a model company in Russia the St Petersburg Tram Company.
My example is number 3 out of a production run of 10, it is shown sans pickup poles, mirrors & safety rails between the front & rear wheels which will be added when safely in a display case.

Looks great Nimrod and nice detail for 1/43, I would have thought it was a larger scale.

Yes dilli the detail is all there down to the correct pattern seat fabric, several livery options were available at one time from the mid 30s onwards including a couple of war time liveries with silver roof, I believe the E3/HR2 type LT tram is the next LT model but there is no indication as to when orders will be accepted but with a projected price of around £500+ it is a pipe dream for me.......unless I insure Mrs N against throwing herself in the river with concrete boots on;)

The latest in the Minichmps line of classic road bikes this 1:12 scale model is of the 1969 Kawasaki Mach III (European spec.)
It is a 500cc air cooled two stroke triple with oil injection (as opposed to premix) & solid state CDI ignition firing anular surface gap plugs.
Designed primarily for the US market it was long on performance but lean on handling & road holding,
The bike made its British debut in early (April-ish) 1969 with a list price of £420 a 650cc Triumph Bonneville would set you back a mere £360.
Although only 500cc it is a superbike when judged on its manic (for 1969) performance a standing start quarter mile evaporated in 12.4 seconds with a terminal speed of 100mph.
Top speed was 120mph & a gallon of 2star disapeared every 15-20 miles if the howl handle was used in anger.
The model its self is a very good representation of the real thing my only gripe is that the rear brake cable is too short & is as tight as a bow string where as the real item goes in a graceful arc to the pedal ….that will be sorted when I can find some suitable silver grey wire.

I have seen that site in the past so I figure you forked over a fair bit of coin for that one, eh? Worth it in my estimation!
Are you going to tantalize us with a short or two of the inside?

I will have a try Upkeep as for the price it was £380 when I ordered mine in April 2006 (now around £450), you order the model to your spec (garage codes, route number, year) pay for the model & wait between 6-18 months for delivery.
My original order got lost in the post:eek: so had to wait a further 3 months but it was worth it the pics hardly do it justice.

Some 'beading-wire' from a craft/sewing shop should work perfecly for this purpose as it is coated with a fine plastic that is not noticeable but will provide the effect you're looking for (also works exceptionally well for aircraft antennae wire given that it comes in various thicknesses).

1st-off, I Must congratulate you Dr./U on your exceptional memory....(evidently not clouded by Beer when posting, eh ? ;)
You're 100% "on the mark", as she is indeed a 1979 Suzuki GS.1000-E
It's basically the biggest (at the time) in the classic 'GS' range that dominated Suzuki's 4-stroke line-up in the late 1970's-thru to early 1980's when they were (at 1st) 'supplemented' by the ('new') 'GSX' range, which eventually morphed into the GSX-R's
My GS.1000-E was the "bigger-brother" of dill's (superb) GS.750, which was my cheif "accquisition" target as a 17-year old !!!!!!!!!!:D :D :cool :cool
The last time I took her (& the wife) to RAF-Bentwaters (whilst the USAF were still in possesion), I had a couple of Police-Officers who were (literally) salivating all-over it & one even offered to buy it off of me....(no-chance), saying it was THE best GS-Thou' they'd ever seen.
Well, I kept it & it's still outside my bedroom now, as we speak...(or, WAS, last-time I looked !!!!!!!!!)

Regarding that 'Kawasaki 2-stroke Triple' model you guys posted/discussed..
Only 12 hours before reading this thread, I downloaded the picture of a GORGEOUS Kawasaki Triple (the KH.400, the 'civilised' 2-stroke alternative to the model in question) that has just been restored & was SOLD within this last month, for £ 2,200
The early-versions (400) had the same/similar scheme to the model you guys posted, as my mate had a 250.S.1 in almost identical scheme.
Evidently, these things DO SELL quite readily now, as us "Elder-Statesmen" like to "hark back to our youth" (although in my case, it was hardly a "Retro" purchase, as I've owned that same GS.1000-E (the one in my avatar) since April 1988, when she had a mere 8,000 miles on the clock.
But these "Real" bikes (like the models) fetch sensible money now, as many older bikers don't want a plastic-missile, but, like a nostalgia-trip, something that "harks back" to their youth !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check out the Candy Cinnamon Pink paintwork on this (restored) Kawasaki KH.400 Triple
I had to lay kitchen-roll across my keyboard, as I was salivating so much......
The lucky owner WILL be having fun this-summer, PROVIDING the middle-cylinder don't "Go-West" !!!!!!!!!!!!

There certainly is a market for both real & model classic bikes in particular the big Kawasakis like the Z1 & KH750, there is a company in Shropshire that specialises in rebuilding classic Japanese bikes...a fully rebuilt/restored Z1 costing anything from £15000-£20000 check out the link.

This is the only 'Roller' I'll ever get close to owning, its the PE FAB1.....of course
Have had this one a while (before the price plummeted), looks/feels more like a well made pre-pro than the final production model, quite heavy too as it's made mainly from resin.
The Canopy is probably the nastiest bit, made from clear plastic only a bit thicker than the stuff that come in toy's window boxes. When I find the original box I'll add the twin aerials and spare 'Spirit of Ecstasy' contained therein (I hope  )

I've often mentioned that I came to diecast aviation collecting via the world of model cars - a 20 year obsession that certainly prepared me for the shift in focus to things with wings. Indeed, the sale of some of the cars (and I had rather a lot:o ) helped fund my earliest aircraft purchases.
However, there are very many models I'll never part with - too much sentimental value, not to mention that some of them will be pretty much irreplaceable now.
Here's a few I'm particularly fond of. Two decades or so ago there was very little choice when it came to diecast outside of the 'toy' companies. These are all white metal models from various small specialist manufacturers. They were fragile, expensive, but far more accurate than most of the diecast then available. I drifted away from these in the mid 1990s when the range and quality of diecast really took off. (Plus it was cheaper!;) ) Ironically the best diecast models now cost around the same as a most of these did back in 'the day'.
Sorry - no buses...;) And apologies for picture quality.:o

Now time for some 'Big Banger' sports cars, in the form of the 1971 Gulf-Porsche Le Mans lineup. This was for a long time the fastest ever Le Mans race (don't know if it still holds that record:unsure: ), won at an average speed of around 138 mph. with qualifying laps on the fast, in parts narrow public road circuit at 155 mph. For me the Porsche 917 is one of my ultimate machines, up there with the Spit, Lanc and Mossie for the 'Cor!' factor. It's over 40 years old now and still looks like it's doing 200 mph, even standing still. When you have a close look at a real one and realise that under that lightweight grp bodywork there's nowt to protect the driver apart from a few chassis tubes - none of todays carbon fibre composites - you realise that driving one at 230 mph in the rain takes an excess of b@lls and an absence of imagination...
On to the models, car #17 and #18 are white metal by Marsh Models - one of the best at what they do, and car #19 (which finished second in the 1971 24 Hours) is by BBR, and is resin.

I'll give it a very light polish 1st, fingers crossed. Paint-wise Id probably go with a grey painted roof (as some of these had) which avoids the paint matching problem.

This is an excellent series of period vehicles, I have 15 so far mostly commercial vehicles in British Railways blood & custard livery & BRS Parcels Service green....I think Hornby are introducing a Scammell Scarab fuel bowser in RAF livery.;)
Those look really good. I've noticed that my local model shops are getting more and more of these little 1/76th vehicles from various manufacturers, and although obviously intended as model railway accessories, I'm finding it increasingly hard to resist getting a few as a collection in their own right.
Hornby do a lovely little MG TC, which although launched postwar - just (1945) certainly wouldn't look out of place parked near an appropriate Spit or Hurri.:)

One of my very rare diecast purchases for this year has not long arrived, it is the 1:12 scale Minichamps 1969 Honda CB750 K0. In 1968 there had been roumors in the British motorcycling press that Honda were going to take on the British manufacturers with a 750cc twin, but within weeks of such speculation a four cylinder test bike was photographed being tested in the US.
The original K0 series of which only a few hundred were made had sand cast crankcases as Honda were not sure if the world was ready for such a machine & did not want to invest in making tooling that would never be used.
They need not have worried as motorcyclists the world over clutched it to their asphalt bosoms like no other bike in history.
It was not eclipsed in the glamour stakes until 1973 when the 900cc Kawasaki Z1made its debut.
The launch price in 1969 was around £650 an 850cc Mini was around £550 a mint CB750 K0 today like the one in the picture would be ITRO £15-£18000.
The model its self is assembled to a reasonable quality, if it were real the mirrors would give a good view of the riders elbows & the rear brake would not work as the real thing had a rod connecting the pedal to the brake whereas the model has a cable 0 out of ten for accuracy there.

The 1:6 CB750 looks superb I hope they got the rear brake operation right on it, the 1:12 version has a cable where in fact it should be a rod:rolleyes:
The big Kwacker is a beauty too ... I am waiting for a 1:6 Suzuki GT750 & CBX1000 :cool

I cant see that selling very well Dilli even with a small run of 639 pieces, I have the original RM coach & IMHO it is the least impressive of the RM issues.

On a trip to Windermere yesterday I wondered into Atkinsons the toy shop in the hope of treating myself to something from their die cast selection.
They used to be Corgi Gold Star stockists but shock horror it appears that their days of selling adult collectables are at an end.
Only two planes remained from the Corgi range AA33605 Tiger Meet Tornado
@ £9.99 & a AA35103 USAF Thailand Super Connie @£9.99.
Neither were of interest to me so I looked at a modest selection of HM offerings most were WWll US Navy Avengers & Hellcats all @ £9.99
plus three Mirages in Desert Storm camo @£9.99 & a Saudi version @ £15
plus an Egyptian MiG @ £4.99 nothing for me there even at those prices.
On my way out I passed the kids farm toys & among them was a Universal Hobbies 1:16 1948 Fordson Major E27N I have been after one for three years but at around £50+p&p I held off.
My capture yesterday was in an unopened carton & cost me £25 sadly they only had the one ...these are getting hard to find & invariably are over £50+p&p.
I remember the farmer using an E27N to power his saw ... his timber yard backed on to our cottage ... the heady aroma of TVO brings back vivid memories of those days.

This 1948 RT 597 arrived this morning & it is quit a rare beast only one Model Zone shop out of four that I went into had it in stock & that example was damaged so thank you Time Tunnel for coming up trumps. My example is number 234 of 768 made, the quality is typical Sun Star ...overall it looks great but slight niggles here & there like bowed hand rail on the rear platform, masking of paint could be better in places & very small inclusions in the casting near the upper deck front windows ... all fixable but I wish I didn't have to.

That bus is a beauty!!
It looks so close to the real thing with all that wonderful detail. (niggles not noticeable). Your photos of it with the brick wall behind really adds flavour and charm, Mr. Nimrod. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/upkeep/add-ons/thmbs_up2.png
Exquisite!! :cool
I have to add that the Fordson is a charmer too, but I'm really drawn in by that RT. (I only wish I had the room . . . :()

Thanks Upkeep overall it is a cracking model only let down by the usual Sun Star variable quality control .. this particular run seems to have had its fair share of quality issues ...I asked the dealer to inspect the model before sending it he had two in stock the other one he told me had a big scratch on it when he opened up the box.
I have a British Railways Bedford OB on order too I just hope the quality has not dropped on those.

That does look very nice Nimrod
Last two RT's I received, one had the hand rail missing, the other had the partition (next to the platform) rolling around inside it
The next Sun Star model Im looking at is the 1/12 Morris Mini Van ;)

I am so tempted by the Minis dilli but I am having trouble keeping up with the bus releases :( a few weeks ago I went to pick up this model from Model Zone in Birmingham they had reserved their only one for me.
When I looked at it in the shop one of the upper deck widow winders was on the platform floor .. an 80 mile round trip for nothing  the Q A department at Sun Star must be on permanent holiday ...buying them via mail order is too much like Russian Roulette

When I first saw this model it had me scratching my head WHO is going to buy a PINK bus? I think just 500 have been made
but even at that level I am sure they will hang around for many months.
I am sure that when they go sub £60 many will be stripped & re-liveried
I quite fancy one in Mansfield & District livery ... I wonder if they have any pink blanks back at the factory it doesn't take a great leap of imagination to see another
marketing opportunity there .......

I think Mattel have done this car some justice with this model, what looks like white paint on the grille is actually a peak at the chrome engine behind the mesh grille. There is a 1/43 version too, roughly the same size as the original Corgi one.
I am sure my kid brother had this exact model:)
If it was bought 'back in the day' it would probably be the Corgi version, a mint one costs a Mint to buy these days.
Have another iconic 1/18 in the post, Corgi did a version of this one too I believe they sold a gazillion of them back in the '60's, they probably still have the franchise.

With nil winged subjects around to tempt me atm, I thought these looked interesting (then again, I would:rolleyes: ) 1/43 007 DB5 in a mini diorama box, part of a magazine series I can't remember. Better detail than Corgi's effort and not too bad for a 5iver I think :)

My Christmas present to myself arrived this morning the Sun Star 1:24 Bedford OB in British Railways livery 1949. It is quite a low production run
too the certificate says mine is 139 of 638 I guess the original vehicle must be preserved somewhere as Sun Star have incorporated a modern Green First Aid box inside the drivers door.

Very nice pic Dilli. Maybe it's got them long legs to help those tanks clear the deck. I have a few of these, basically gap fillers for what Corgi didn't do in 1/32. Assembly normally just requires the wings being attached to the fuselage.
PS Nice bus Nimrod. ;)

All placcy mate, as ZS-Van mentioned you just need to snap the wings (one piece) on the fuselage and tanks into place on the wings.
Hardest part was untieing the four twist ties that secures the lot down in the box :)
