"Why are the guns wrong,Grampa?" This was asked by 11yrs old grandson about my new Corgi Memphis Belle 1/72 US33315 limited release 499 of 1000. Indeed, why are forward guns in the nose wrong. The machineguns are two lone barrels, hence not guns. The receivers are absent. For those who might not know, the receiver is the long rectangular case behind the barrel that holds the firing mechanism, bolt, trigger, ammo belt, so the machinegun can fire, and upon which the sights are mounted. Technically & legally speaking the "gun". A minor, inconsequential oversight, too small to notice some will say. Nothing worth getting excited about. This is only a model. This is Corgi\Hornsby, after all. Just accept it, ignore it or don't buy it. I do not hate Corgi. 70% of my diecast is Corgi.I do not have the luxury of going to a local shop to carefully inspect every plane before I buy. I am cautious in what I order and read reviews, comments, and look at pictures, before I order online. In this case, desire overcame caution and I preordered. I worked hard for 33yrs, and have a modest pension to show for it. At $125-$150 (82-98 GBP) each, I want and expect better quality. After the furor over Hell's Angel's, another limited 1000 U.S. edition, I should of waited. The second major blunder on Corgi\Hornsby's part are plain silver wheel covers on the main u\c. The iconic distinctive red, white, blue with stars wheel covers are absent. Minor oversight, no waist guns. That said, the positives: The color scheme is outstanding, the name stenciling details, kill & victory marks, the "Belle" pinups are outstanding. There are no glaring gaps in the nose. There is a small gap behind the tail gunner portion of the tail, where it meets the main fuselage I only noticed because I shone a bright light on the tail to see if there was a gunner, there isn't one. The plane matches pictures I have seen of the color scheme in Jeff Ethell's "Air Command" and in the Memphis Belle documentary film, except the missing wheel covers. To the research and development team, my hat is off. They did a fantastic job. The execution of the final product not so great, because of the aforementioned errors. If the major blunders were absent, a good model would have been excellent, a potential "classic", IMHO. The previous\first Corgi Belle had the correct wheel covers and complete forward machineguns BTW.

My major complaint is the lack of consistent quality assurance\control on Corgi\Hornsby's part before, during, and after the execution and before final release. The errors on the Belle and the Hell's Angels should have been caught and dealt with. Especially, since these were not Corgi's first two B-17's and they were limited 1000 edition planes. Bob Foster's and Cobber Kain's Hurricanes come to mind, also. When Corgi\Hornsby does their models well the results are spot on for the most part. The person in charge of QA|QC on this project should be fired and replaced, IMHO. I know there is no perfect diecast and they are just toys, but diecast is what Hornsby does. Complacency and resigned acceptance of the status quo will not improve Hornsby's QA|QC. Perhaps a letter to the CEO might, if someone would give me his name and an address, I will write one, hopefully not the only one. Probably won't accomplish much, but might be worth it.

Will step away from the soapbox now. Before, anyone says build your own, can't lack the skills. Can't afford the first Corgi Belle either, and don't do E-bay, been burned twice. 'Nuff said. Sorry no pictures, haven't a clue how to upload\post pictures. Am keeping the plane, only Belle I'll have the opportunity to own, just wish the errors were absent. Passionate about my B-17's.

This is a funny topic, one which I haven't thought about until recently (when I got married and moved in with someone else, and thus space became a premium item up for trade and compromise), so I wonder what you guys and gals have to say about this.

I have been collecting for about 5 years, and until I got married it was a private affair (the wife does try and get involved, and buys me planes every now and then - she does indeed try) so I could display what I wanted, when I wanted, where I wanted, and all was good.

Now however, the situation is different - I've moved into a house which already has baggage, and trying to shoehorn two peoples lives into one small Victorian end-of-terrace is difficult to say the least, let alone finding display space!

I realised something recently that I had simply fallen into over the years - I have tiers of models and they get treated differently.

My first tier is pretty much any Corgi mass release (and HM etc) - the boxes get discarded, I don't really care about the certs, models get displayed somewhere. They look nice but they aren't going to be worth all that much in the future (lets face it, the days of the dinky toy style appreciation are out of the window for collectables that are mass produced).

My second tier are models that I like more than tier 1 - models such as Corgi heavies, Century Wings, Gemini Aces etc. These get to keep their boxes, go on display and go back into boxes when they come off display. Certs are retained, models are looked after.

My final tier are the models which I buy for the future, the really limited editions, the hard to finds etc. These rarely if ever come out of the box, they never get displayed etc.

My question is based around the fact that I am now faced with a situation I never ever thought about, because I was totally at my own will in my collecting career - I am now having to think about getting rid of some tier 1 and 2 models.

Firstly, should I even bother looking to get rid of unboxed, uncerted models? Should I just box them in cardboard boxes and consign them to the attic? Would anyone buy them?

Secondly, what are peoples thoughts on buying obviously displayed, obviously removed from the box at some point models? If they are all there parts wise, does the first-owner-feeling really matter that much? Obviously for rarer items this doesnt matter as much (anyone is going to buy an easter egg Lanc regardless of the fact that at least one of my six has been displayed at some point).

Lastly, do you peeps have tiers of models? Do you have a range that you treat purely as display fodder rather than as a collectable?

That is until I wondered how the Germans may have tested the powerplants for their infamous New York Bomber concept. (yes, I know it was supposed to be a jet powered aircraft but lets say for arguments sake that it wasn`t and they planned to use props).

Anyway, got the 1/48 prop from my P-38 kit that I `butchered` into my now broken up for scrap XP-55 Skunk so I will look to modify it into something a little more German looking. So the `big` prop will go on the nose for inflight testing while the standard Do 217 engines will remain where they are for take off and landing.
The rest of the family were obviously as excited as I was!

I had actually spotted it on Google Earth and hoped it was still there. I also spotted that there was an airbase not far up the road so hoped to see some aircraft. The second day and a couple of small trainers were doing circuits and bumps from about 6pm until midnight:

The next day got better when I spotted a familiar shape also doing circuits and bumps:

I had hoped to see an SU-33, sorry about the bad pictures but both the camera and I were at our limits! Here are a couple of zoomed in. Surprised that they are Russian Navy birds here in Ukraine!

If I catch anything else of interest I will post some more. I never caught it on camera but a Mig 29 also flew right overhead.

Living in Kent we have quite a bit of 'BoB' history around here. In a nearby village (Marden), Von Werra (the one that got away), ditched his '109. Our local church was destroyed by the Luftwaffe and a Do-17 crashed at the local golf course. However, in the next village along, Matfield, a brave 'BoB' pilot met his fate on September 6th 1940:

'Carl Raymond Davis was born in South Africa of American parents and was sent to Sherborne College in Britain at the age of 13. He later studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and McGill University, Montreal where he qualified as a mining engineer.

He lived in London during the 1930's and joined 601 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force at Hendon, being commissioned in August 1936 (Officer Number 90131). He was called to full-time service on 27 August 1939 and later that year flew one of the six 601 Squadron Blenheims that attacked the German seaplane base at Borkum on 27 November.

Once the Battle of Britain began, Davis claimed a Me110 destroyed on 11 July 1940 plus a Me109 damaged on 26 July, two Me110's probably destroyed and one damaged on the 11 August. Then on the 13 August three Me110's destroyed, one probably destroyed, one Ju88 shared damaged and one Me110 damaged.

This was followed by Ju88's destroyed on 15 and 16 August, a Me109 and a Ju87 Stuka destroyed on the 18th, a Me110 probably destroyed on the 31st and then a Me110 destroyed on 4 September.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 30 August. Davis was shot down and killed on 6 September when his Hurricane P3363 was shot down into the garden of Canterbury Cottage, Matfield near Tunbridge Wells. He was 29.

He is buried near the family home in Storrington, West Sussex at St.Mary's Church'

Yesterday, I placed some flowers on the Matfield war memorial and paid my respects. Matfield is the birthplace of Siegfried Sassoon who was born at Weirleigh hospital (which still stands) in Matfield. His younger brother Hamo is recorded on the memorial but there is no mention of Davis. Canterbury Cottage is still there and I doubt if the scene has changed that much in the past 70 years.

Carl Raymond Davis achieved quite a significant haul of Luftwaffe aircraft during the battle until his tragic end. It is difficult to imagine the violence that took place 70 years ago over Britain but it is a privilege to remember the fallen.
