KLM special editions

KLM Flight Operations has started a tradition of presenting all pilots with an historic aircraft model.

We've seen in 2005 the Herpa 1/200th scale Super Constellation, in 2006 we received a DC-2 in 1/144th by Hobby Master (not available in stores!!) and in 2007 it was a 1/300th scale Hobby Master DC-8-30.

Last year, also by Hobby Master, we were given a 1/300th scale Boeing 747-200 in delivery colours, PH-BUA "Mississippi"" which gained fame during a professionalism and skill. On one occasion, they took off from a taxiway in Libya, because the main runway was blocked by Col. Gadaffis's finest! That scared the living daylights out of the terrorists, who them quickly complied with all demands by the authorities and thus ending the hijack!!

didn't KLM have a Lockheed S-2 Tracker and a Harvard as training aircraft....HM could do a KLM Harvard as a special....

If that is the case, I would not hesitate to buy a KLM Harvard. However, I would hope they'd let some trickle into North America this time so I don't have to order from Holland to satisfy my craving

Interesting models ETOPS. Was the DC-2 in 1/144 or 1/200 scale? If 1/144 seems unusual for HM to do it in that scale.

On looking at the picture of the DC-2 with the DC-8, did a bit of calculating. The DC-8 had a 142ft 5in wingspan, which equates into 5.69in (1:300). Whereas the DC-2 had 85ft equates to 5.1in. Pic shows model has larger wingspan, if 1:144 should be 7.08in. Think I've answered my own question! Would love to get my hands on one.

Fantastic!! This looks like it also has the headlights in the nose. Can you say for sure what scale 'Uiver' is, Av8tor?

Model is definitely 1/144 scale, here it is next to a DC-3. My only criticism is the "Hobbymaster infamous panel line/wash". Next to the Corgi and compared to pics of the actual plane, this looks like it was built out of metal planks!



The cockpit and cabin windows are done very well with transparencies and overall it compliments my fleet of Daks nicely. The only alternative was to build a plastic one.

I wonder what would it take to get Hobby Master to release 'Uivers' to the retail world in small quantities? The scale fits existing 1:144 collections. Hmmmm . . .

It is odd, but the Corgi DC-3 looks so refined beside HM's effort. Metal planks, indeed! Regardless -- most interesting -- and a 'continental' collection of DC-3's isn't complete without this KLM DC-2. Absolute pure classic!

Absolutely!! That's the one. Of course you are aware of the DC-2 restored as 'Uiver', currently on display at Albury Airport, NSW, Australia? Looks pretty smart, alright!!

I didn't think there were any DC-2's flying anymore. Do you have either a link or know where I could find out more about this one you mention?

Depends what happened to the tooling. If this was a special commission for KLM would seem unlikely to be be done again. The DC-2 is shown on the Aviodrome web-site along with the DC-8 and a Connie model.

Just an addition on the KLM models mentioned in this thread. KLM Flight Operations started to give out as a Christmas present (our 'bonus' is of a different magnitude as e.g. a banker ) diecast models of historic KLM aircraft. First; in 2005; was the Herpa L-1049 Super Connie (KLM Flt Ops bought about 2.200 of them which makes them sort of a limited edition). The following year the DC-2 was a present from the big boss. I traced the model as a Hobby Master offering; which came out parallel with the Aviodrome L-749 Connie in 1:250 scale. BTW, the DC-2 scales out at a perfect 1:144 indeed.
Then, in 2007, we got a nice 1:300 DC-8-33 model in delivery colours. Also from Hobby Master; it was not to be mistaken because the stand was indeed marked with the HM logo.
In 2008 the B747-200 was the model of choice; painted in delivery colours, it was the infamous 'Mississippi' which played a big part in on of KLM's dramas: the five-day hijack ordeal which culminated in the 747 taking-off from a disused taxi-track on a Libyan airfield. The terrosrists were so impressed by this action they forgot about their issues and gave themselves up to the authorities in - not sure - Cyprus?
