Default Repainting diecast aircraft

I have a few IXO diecast aircraft (plus a Corgi and Witty Wings one) that I'd like to have a go at repainting into Finnish Air Force colours. I've not attempted repainting before, so I'd be grateful for any tips on the best way to go about this.

In particular, what is the best way to prepare the surfaces? Do I need to remove the existing paint and markings first? If so, how, and should I then apply an undercoat before a new top coat?

Any other thoughts welcome too.

Many thanks,

I've done a couple of repaints over silver coloured diecast which came out ok......didn't remove the main paint but did remove the markings using nail polish remover.

There is a thread or two on this subject going waaaaay back......

Hi nf3996. I've done a few diecast repaints as well and other than removing markings as TDM says, I've done nothing different than if I were painting a plastic kit. IXO's are a favorite of mine for repaints as they've done many types no other manufacturer has given us, and the castings are fairly accurate but are often let down by their finish.

Here's a few IXO repaints I've done recently (with some minor modifications where needed):

Beau nightfighter...

Defiant...

another of the finished model next to the original...

And on the subject of Finnish stuff, IXO's Buffalo looks great with the simple addition of some national markings...

I'm also planning to do a Finn Hurricane one day. The Hurri looks sharp in that green/black/yellow livery. What types are you repainting nf?

I'm going to have a go at an IXO Hurricane, MS406 and Polikarpov I-16, plus a Witty Wings Me 109G and a (broken) Corgi Lysander. I have the IXO Buffalo to which I've added the Finnish swastikas, and it was doing that that got me thinking about the other possibilities. If I can achieve results half as good as yours I'll be pleased!

No4, excellent repaints indeed! Very

I wish I had the knowledge and expertise to do something like this! Hence I only buy diecast....

I know another couple of members by diecast, rip em apart and re-paint them too and have to take my hats off to em....

Excellent, would love to see pics as you finish them Alan. Also, if you don't have it already, Corgi's Finn marked Gladiator is superb (my favorite Glad)

Ahh, No.4's Defiant re-paint in 264's markings is a Die-cast LEGEND on both sides of the Atlantic

Great shame he don't work for one of the big Die-cast companies, or else we'd have some real 'belters' available on the market !!!!!!!!

the struts fixing the wings are fixed with rivets agent, which look like a no go area.the wing itself just looks like you can unclip it from the top of the canopy glazing.will have a good look later.

Is the fixing of the struts to the wing a sorta one way fix then.... ( i.e it dont come apart..?) The wings are held together by two metal rods.. it's one of these things that you find out after totally demolishing one...

(me am just trrying to put one back together..!!.. wing is a little loose.. and there seems to be a plastic bit floating around the cockpit thats broken off...)

p.s Anyone fixed the ladder to their black lizzie...?

certainly is,the bottom part of the struts looks pretty difficult to get apart without damage to the plastic.
to get the whole plane apart would mean braking the engine cowl off as this covers half of one of the screw holes.

Sell one eBay and the Royal Mail will disassemble it for you en route! That's what I did. It left me in perfect shape and arrived at the buyer in a handful of pieces. I refunded his money and am now looking to 'restore' it.
