Default Some Daks

With "Jiminy Cricket" more than likely being the last Corgi Dak produced, have previously had to do some "DIY" versions to keep myself happy. Tired of all the hard work, decided to get the 2 1/144 Altaya models...

A USAAF D-Day C-47 "Kilroy is Here" from the 90th TCS/439th TCG

A USAAF C-47 from the 20th TCS/ 6th Air Force based in Puerto Rico

Plus the Big Bird Vol.4 plastic ones (diecast fans look away!)....

A USAAF D-Day C-47 "Sugar Puss" from the 90TCS /438 TCG

The AC-47D "Spooky" 4th Special Ops Squadron, 14th Special Ops Wing

and finally a Jap Dak...

The Altayas are a hybrid with metal fuselage and plastic wings whereas the Big Bird are all plastic and are actually snap together! Both suffer from the "cockpit escape module syndrome" but reckon they aren't too bad.

Thumbs up I have a soft spot for the Corgi Dakota

The RAF Berlin airlift one was my first ever, it was a gift from a good friend when I was laid up in hospital, just about 11 years ago.

They look a lot finer than the Corgi efforts, in some respects - more detail, better undercarts, thinner mouldings. But as you say the cockpits let them down - I would be reaching for the filler!

Thanks for showing them.

Thumbs up

Unfortunate about that 'escape pod' effect. Other than that, those DO look magnificent, Av8tor!! I also really liked the mods you did on the Corgi ones. Those inspired me to do some 1:144 kit builds which are now treasured in my collection.

For the record, I always thought Corgi did a pretty decent job on their DC-3's, although I find find they sat a touch too high on their u/c. Other than that, pretty decent, indeed!

The L2D3-1 "Tabby" is certainly different. I particularly like the contrasting silver undersurface and the yellow leading edge.

Described by Eisenhower as one of 4 things that helped win the war, the fact that everyone flew DC-3s seems a bit ironic.

The Japs and Soviets building their own versions. I read that the Germans kept their "acquired" aircraft up to date with all the Douglas and CAB mods during the war via the Swiss!

There is another copy the Japanese used, the Kawasaki KI-56 wich in practice was a licence-built version of the Lockheed Electra but a better aircraft than the original mainly due to structural modifications code nameTHALIA
